I preferred the the stippled no washes method. It gave a more washed out red that went from almost ruddy brown to bleachy coral and seemed the most "cloth-esc" of the bunch. Personally, I would love to see a "Green 3-Ways" tutorial video with a twist, Green Skin, Green Armor, and Green Cloth. Each of these requires a unique method for both execution and finish that I feel would not only be particularly useful in a number of applications, but also likely highly malleable for other hues. Great tutorial as always and thank you for posting while busy on the road.

  • @ArtisOpus

Oh now that is interesting! I really like the ethos behind it, just covering the colour thoroughly in different applications. Would it be more useful if it was the same colours used in each one, to see how it worked on different parts, or different colours each time? I'd have to recalibrate my brain for the thumbnail :D

  • @jcillis

@@ArtisOpus I think that it wouldn't have to be the same colour across the board. There are many colours, though I feel green is particularly good at it, that can be both warm or cold, shadow or highlight, smooth or textured, both life and death. Green is so malleable with the addition of other colours, undercoats, or washes that I feel it would be a disservice to pigeon to a single hue. Now, if you use the same green across the video and add other colours or treatments to show how flexible a single green can be with the other colours of your library as a foil then I can see that pulling things together in a nice tidy AO video package. And you'd also be able to flex your favorite green Flesh, "Metallic" Armor, and Cloth in the process. Thanks for listening and can't wait to see if this sparks anything for you.

As already said on the teaser picture: I like the stippled one most. But after a second thought, I'd add that the extra 'drama' of the contrast one might be a good choice for a standalone showcase piece as well. Love the idea of drybrushing and then using contrast paints. Was trying this on some Cursed City rats as a start. Was to careful with the drybrush so after using the contrast paints there could have been more contrast. :) And good idea trying the contrasts on a palette. Is obvious but i really didn't think about it when painting the minis. But giving them a final layer seems totally neccessary if you want to get good contrast. Really nice vid. Thank you.

As a next vid I'd really prefer osl / glowing. I'm acutally painting Sylvaneth with a lot of runes or these ghostly guys in their branches. I'm also tried one on a lava base (if you want I could send you a pic - but I guess that would be more of how it does not work. :) ). But the glowing effekt doesn't really work if there is no real "light"-reflection. Looks ok but somethings definetly missing. Questions I'd like answers to is (aside from how is it basically painted): * What needs to be considered regarding the color of the light? * Whats important to get the "glow / light" feeling? * Is there a diffierence in osl on armor or cloth? If yes, how do I get a result having both on the miniature? And is it neccessary to do the difference? * What about the different strenghts of the light? e.g. a rune on a stone may be a weaker lighting than a campfire, a lantern or a spell. I hope you get the idea. :)
