Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Sarasota Florida.

I am a beginner and just loved this tutorial - thanks so much! You are very talented!
I love the colors you used in this and I'm excited to try a looser style. Very cool!
Great job. I'm detailed realistic orientated and been painting for decades probably before this artist was born, and never was satisfied with my flower painting because I had not recognized that zen of stepping back and being loose with flowers and the color intelligence. Thanks to him and other artist for sharing there beautifully work and techniques
I've been looking at a lot of rose tutorials, and your roses are really top notch beautiful.
So refreshing to listen and learn from a coach who keeps it simple, I feel confident after I've watched your videos. Thank you.🇨🇦
i love your work. And your humility and willingness to share.

Did you mean the flowers, or him?
Amei! Obrigada pelo vídeo! 👏👏👏👏
Hi Paint Coach. I enjoyed watching this video and checked out your other videos, as well. The kinds of tutorials that are most useful to me are the step by step ones. I've been painting in oils for 10 years and I'm always looking for new sites to follow. Usually, the ones that are most helpful to me are about an hour long or so.

I like your painting 😍
Thank you I have been surching for antistatic show pacific direction on roses or flowers I am following you.
One for the thumb! :D
I've always painted flowers (on/off 9yrs), and I found these tips very helpful! I also found your execution quite a joy to watch! I live Daniel Keys' work! He was a student of Richard Schmid. My favorite floral painters are Michael Klein and Elizabeth Robbins.
Hey - I really enjoyed your video and just watched your story. It's amazing how all realist artists seem to hit the same wall when it comes to art instruction. I'm much older than you, and when I was in school, painting class was all about abstract art. We got ZERO instruction. I just started uploading tutorial videos on my KZread channel and am getting ready to start a flower painting and came across this video. You did a great job explaining. I've been watching flower videos for a couple days to see what is out there. I've painted flowers in the past, but there is always more to learn. That is what makes KZread for artists so much fun. I wish you the best of luck on your channel. I love the concept of "Paint Coach". I'll be checking out some of your other videos as well.

Shelley Hanna thanks! I’ve heard from other artist that actually learning how to draw and paint is coming back in a lot of schools. It was definitely not at USC when I was there. My main goal with this channel is to let people know they CAN oil paint just as easily if not easier than other mediums. Good luck with your channel! Subscribed! 👍🏻👨🏻🎨

Great video, thanks, exactly which Rosemary brush are you using? Or like the best?
Your videos are super helpfull!!! Thank you so much! The first layer you had on your whole canvas which is kinda thin burnt sienna color, how do you thin that out?
@paintcoach

Thanks! I like to tone my canvas with burnt sienna or burnt sienna and ultramarine blue mixed together with a lot of paint thinner. I brush it on and wipe it down with a paper towel and it's ready to paint on.

@@paintcoach so if you wipe it off, it won't need the top layer to be thinner anymore? And does this base coating make the surface any softer to paint on? Thanks xxx
Cannot find "Description Below"....only see comments. Want to subscribe and get more info so need to know the link. Thanks!

Drape ?
👏🙏
Writing it down here so I can use it later if needed: 1. Good reference 2. Composition 3. Don't focus on details from the start, first get the general value and shape 4. Lay darks first (build up to light) 5. Put background colour asap 6. Don't use pure white 7. If your lights aren't light enough then probably your darks aren't dark enough 8. Always check your values 9. Look for reflective light 10. Detail isn't everything

I love your lessons. I am so A.D.D. that your swallowing distracts me. Hahaa, I think your mic is picking it up. I am working on ignoring it…..😂
