How to Paint Masters of the Universe Battleground Terrain | MotU Painting Guide

Ойындар

Always Board Never Boring recently received a copy of Masters of the Universe Battleground, a tabletop skirmish game from Archon Studio. While he can't wait to paint the characters, like He-Man, Skeletor, and Orko, he has decided to start by painting the terrain... so... much... terrain. In this video we have some quick and easy ways to paint up stone walls, desert sand, rocks, pillars, and more.

    For someone who doesn't enjoy painting terrain you made a cracking job of it. Almost tempted to pick the game up myself, I'll see what things are like payday.

    Thanks. It's a really fun game, and you get stacks of terrain. It's all on the hex bases, but I don't think that would stop it being good useable terrain in other game systems as well.

    Good job on the terrain. It looks great. I probably would have done the terrain walls in “Castle Grayskull” greenish tint…certainly I will do the ruins from CMON’s Clash for Eternia, when I get that in December…

    Thanks. I mentioned this in another comment, actually. It was my first thought to do it like the green from the original Castle Greyskull playset, but I decided the blue had a better contrast with the yellow sand. Also, I'm doing a lot of the pipework in yellow, and again, I though that looked better against the blue.

    Looks great. I probably would not have resisted my urge to do these in dusty greens and purples. I always highlight desert sand with a bright or ducky yellow, even for historicals, because it's far to drab otherwise. It helps to simulate some of the reflected sunlight gleam without doing multiple offwhite to white buildups, which inevitably ruins models boots and such. There are lots of metallics in the toy range. Just off the top of my heard you have ram Ram, battle armour he-man, Robototo's weapons had metallic flake in the silver plastic. They there's the chrome plating of Fisto and Jijitsu. Dragon blast Skeletor even had an actual metal chain. My original he-man has a silver gray weapons. Granted the cartoon doesn't show metallics, but that's likely due to limitations in colors due to photographic requirement rather than artistic desire.

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    Originally I was going to shoot for that sickly green of the original Castle Greyskull playset, but in the end I decided the blue would be a better option with the yellow bases. I shouldn't have said there were no strong metallics in the toy range (comes from speaking without a script). But when I think of the toy range, and especially the weapon accessories, I don't really think of a lot of chromed or metallic items. I think of the things like the purple, yellow, plain grey, and green weapons and armour - the single-piece plastic elements without paint. I mean, even though jitsu had a gold chopping hand (and I think he may have had some metallic on his chest plate?), his sword was just orange. That's the sort of thing I meant. Regardless, metallics weren't really a thing in the cartoon, and as I said in the video I'm trying to capture something of the essence of the toy line and the cartoon all at once, and for the characters I'm using source images lifted from the cartoons rather than the toys. I'm probably going to spend far too long arsing around trying to colour match things!

  • @johnmiddleton4291

    @johnmiddleton4291

    @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah, the cartoons didn't use metallics because of photography requirements. Fisto would be a good time to break out some of that Greestuff World chrome paint! That's be fun to to try and film under lights. You can practice your SOS signal mirror skills at the same time. I fully agree that most of the weapons were just bright, and some not so bright, colored plastics. They did have an accessory pack of recolors than were more metal and grey too. I'd probably go with the toys over the cartoon, as the multiple toy ranges seem to be the design inspirations for most things and modern cartons are all computer colored with layered transitions which might make you crazy.

    I'd probably have to put some kind of warning on the video. I haven't started the characters yet. I've just been looking for good source images and thinking about paint options. I wasn't allowing myself to touch them until the terrain set was done. My next big problem will be deciding what order to paint the characters in. I mean, after painting Orko, of course... And leaving Stratos to last...

  • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    Not as such. There is a "first game" setup that recommends He-Man, Stratos, and Man-at-Arms versus Skeletor, Mer-Man, and Trap Jaw, but that's just to teach you a bunch of the different game mechanisms. Other than that the game is very much geared towards tournament play with 100 point forces. I am probably going to make a bunch of my own narrative scenarios to play through though, and I do hope they explore that avenue in the future, although I understand that isn't what they are going for right now. At 100 points you are pretty much running four to five characters per side anyway. If you have less you have so many leftover points you get a bit overloaded with special upgrades. They don't really have any "filler" characters at the moment, or characters who are so overpowered they take up a huge chunk of your points.
