There she goes again. Michele W. hitting it out of the park! Unbelievable really her knowledge base and generosity in revealing it. Just yesterday I discovered she had battled cancer and didn’t miss a beat with gifting us all with her knowledge; it goes beyond art and into biology, psychology and philosophy (eg define looseness as it applies to the fine arts). Thank you, Miss Webber.

Colorful nail polish isn’t my thing but I don’t find your nail color distracting at all. I have learned from your videos and really appreciate your generosity in sharing your talent and knowledge. There are too many hyper sensitive people eager to critique everything. It’s an art channel so if color bothers someone they should look elsewhere. Thanks for all you do, Michele ♥️

I really like your Q and A format but I also enjoy all your videos, that is why I am here! On another topic I often wonder why some people enjoy sharing their negativity. Does sharing negativity decrease their burden or does the fact they are not face to face with another person just make it easier? Not a Q you need to A to. Keep up the wonderful work, I enjoy all your videos and I seem to gain information even on things I thought I knew.❤

This is one of the most useful art tutorial channels I’ve come across on KZread.. so thank you for that. As a beginner learning on my own without access to a physical teacher you have been a huge help.. and the colour of your nails or what you look like is neither here nor there and I really don’t understand why some people think because you’re on KZread you’re fair game.. 💁 and why they feel the need to actually let you know! Luckily every single comment is good for your channel.. even the dumb ones 😂👍

Welcome back! I relate to what you said about your family not supporting you. My mother grew up in extreme poverty and she devoted her life making sure her children did not have a similar life. She always viewed art as too risky. She enjoyed my art and was proud of me for it, but for her I was better at psychology. I love this videos in which you answer questions from members of this community you created. 🥰 Thank you!

Your comments on style and loose style in particular resonated with me. I too am of the fold-my-socks and label-my-pasta-jars ilk; I view the world rather literally and yet so much admire the work of lovely loose paintings. The reason I am trying to do more of that is simply because I have absolutely no skill in the realism, detailed style and it frustrates me to the point of not wanting to pick up the brushes. I know, can't get better if I don't try. I'll get there at some point. Thanks for the prodding... BTW, your green eyes don't look sludgy to me. Thanks for all that you share; it's so very much appreciated.

Thank you so very much for all of the accessible information you so freely share. --And for the inspiration that naturally flows from that. For what its worth, I am in my mid 50's and I find that there is nothing quite like art --especially mixed media to help me re-frame and integrate unfortunate experiences. --Especially childhood ones. Leaving it all in the past sounds like an excellent approach, but I don't seem to be physiologically or psychologically made to manage it. It's there regardless of from my will. Gesso-ing over different parts however...THAT I can do. :)

Thank you, Michele, for giving good common-sense advice! It's always a pleasure to learn from you. I was very interested in the brush hold question myself, after being conflicted by another art tutor saying I can't hold my pencil like a writing pen when sketching or I will not have good results. In the end, we develop our skill and muscle memory in different ways. And your nails are fine, the trolls can go troll someone else.

I’ve been painting for a year and a half now and following your videos for the same amount of time. I’d highly recommend others new to your channel to check out all of your previous videos. So much great info! I’ve especially appreciated the videos on techniques and colour palettes and mixing but they’re all great. I’m a bit of a neat freak myself and can’t paint loosely, but your stunning work inspires me to use my eye for detail and love of pattern to start creating my own style. Michele, you were one of the very first KZread watercolor artists providing watercolor instruction that I found many years ago, it seems -not even your own channel but working with SAA paints? Anyway, I’ve been so happy to follow you and chat with you via Facebook. And I’m a proud owner of one of your gorgeous stylized poppy paintings which hangs in my sunroom that I look up at while enjoying my morning coffee. I watch many of your videos (shorts now too), save them, and learn from them. Well, maybe I dont’ actually “learn” but I do take in the ideas which are up to me to put into action as a learned skill through practice. Having said all of that yada yada, I particularly loved this video. You are a very straightforward communicator with absolutely no baloney and I’m a very good baloney detector. It’s sensible to advise that just because you admire a certain style doesn’t mean you yourself can recreate that style, which goes for all sorts of visuals including how one dresses and accessorizes. I’m nearly 5’10” and what we call “big boned” (baloney) and I would never be able to pull off looking like Audrey Hepburn even if I paid a seamstress to make one of her outfits for me. So be yourself in all things whenever possible and art is the most be-yourself activity that one can do. I have collected about a dozen watercolors from a Connecticut artist I met while taking classes with him. He is a brilliant artist whose amazing to watch in action. He naturally paints in a very loose style while still creating brilliant representative colorful paintings. It seems like it just flows out of him. As he’s painting students ask, “Bob, what color is that?” And most of the time, he has no idea and one of the other students will fill him in. In all of the classes I took with him, enjoying every minute, I’ve never seen a single student be able to even come close to what he does. Your message on that topic in this video reached me intellectually-stop trying to do something that’s not natural to you Barb. Now, I am not a super organized label the jar type, but I am fairly organized and tidy-I have to re-approach this long held desire to paint loose ethereal watercolors because I’m not Bob from CT. And I just want to enjoy the process, not frustrated by failures. I do not want enter shows or make a living from watercolor painting. I Just create and relax. Finally, to the trolls who object to your colorful nails-how ironic is it that a person allegedly desirous of improving artistic skills would be put off by color??? WITAF is wrong with people-oh so much is. ❤

Thanks Barbara, I am so glad you liked the video! I think, regarding the artist Bob, many artists are far better at painting than explaining, I may be better at explaining than painting (!) As for fashion, my pet peeve at the moment is oversized blazers, they've been hoisting them on us for years. I am 5'3 it was already hard enough to find one that fitted... I subscribe more and more to the opinion that fashions change simply to get us to buy new stuff we didn't actually need. Keep painting (and posting photos of your beautiful cat) X

Interesting video, thank you Michele. Still wish I was better at loose painting, although I totally get your reasoning as to why I may not be! And I love the green car (which you will always be able to find in a parking lot) and the colourful nails!

Great questions & answers! I really appreciate your answer to the first question. I always love 💕 how your nails look because they are quite inspirational for me too. I do nail painting with stamping design plates & sometimes seeing yours gives me a n idea for doing my own. Thanks for sharing this fun video. Enjoy your weekend & glad you’re back from holiday!

I would appreciate videos on gouache. I purchased a set and am looking forward to trying it. I started my watercolor journey in mid 2020 and I love it, though not easy. I have dabbled in oils and acrylics. I absolutely LOVE your car. Back in the late 1970s I owned a bright orange Volkswagen Square , my favorite and I could always locate it in a parking lot. Your nails are marvelous, I totally love bright colors in clothes, cars, jewelry and more. You go girl!

Your explanation on the connection between the way to hold the brush and the painting style was a real eye opener. I never understood why I can't reproduce what I saw a thousand times. I think it sticks with me from the days in kindergarten where we were taught to hold pencils and brushes "nicely" and only one version was accepted, the same you use for writing (to make it easier for us in first grade I suppose). It's practical to have a bold coloured car, you easily find where you parked in a big lot and because it is so easy to identify it, it is less chances that it gets stolen.

How funny when you talked about the color of photographs. No one wants to see a photo with brown water, but that is often the color of rivers. Once I had to change the color of water from brown in the photo, to blue in my picture, because others would think it was a garden path otherwise.

Your first comment about loose style really resonated with me. I am naturally a detailed/ semi realistic watercolorist. I love looking at other people’s loose style paintings but right now it’s not for me. As for your nails you do you! I’m too stingy to pay someone else to manicure or paint my nails and I’m too lazy to paint my own. I keep my nails short and neat. Also, I’d rather use the money saved to buy more watercolors and art supplies. 😂

thanks for your encouraging advice as always. reminds me of a story in my art class. teacher: now paint this vine loosely me: what does that mean teacher: don't worry about exactly where it goes me: so you mean paint it inaccurately? teacher: maybe this style isn't for you PS never noticed your gaudy nail polish but now that you pointed it out, it's going to keep distracting me ...

I find it very weird that everyone suddenly wants to paint loosely. I've been watching art YT for 15+ years and it's only in the last few years that I've seen a huge push for loose art. Most of the time, this type of art doesn't appeal for me - not everything is for everyone, and that's okay, glad it's there to bring joy to someone else. What bothers me about it is that there seems to be this unsaid implication that "loose" is what all artists should strive for and that loose art is more "raw and organic and from the soul." It makes me so sad that there are artists now who feel like their art is not good because it wasn't executed in an impressionistic style. Very sad.
