How to Paint Like Alphonse Mucha
In this video I explain how I did this master copy of Alphonse Mucha's famous Spring painting using watercolor and ink.
I want to emphasize the point is not to create an exact replica, but it's to practice and learn what makes this piece so successful through the experience of drawing it yourself. Is it the linework, the composition, the colors, all of the above? It's up to you to determine through this practice. Also want to add I purposely changed her eyes to be more in my style.
Level: All levels
Materials you will need:
- Thick watercolor paper (hot or cold press)
- Tracing paper & light box (optional)
- Pencil
- Pens (003, 005, 01, 05 thickness)
- Basic watercolor set
- Watercolor brushes
Steps:
1. Prep the paper by soaking it for 10 mins then stain it.
2. Allow it to dry under heavy books for 1-2 days.
3. Start your drawing either directly on the paper or on tracing paper.
4. If started on tracing paper (for reasons explained in video) then use a light box to trace onto the watercolor paper.
5. Refine drawing and ink it with thin to thick lines.
6. Paint the skin and figure first.
7. Apply masking fluid to cover white or light delicate areas.
8. Paint the background.
9. Remove the masking fluid and you're done!

This is probably the best explanation of how to get the old world effect! Many don't know much of Mucha's work until the later part of his career he used watercolor, pens, coloring crayons..yes I said crayons (some of the muted linework was at times done this way 😉😉 .
