    Thank You!! I'm in the beginning stages of repainting a built-in entertainment center, that was stained and coated with polyurethane clear gloss. Glad you used the Extreme Bonding Primer, that I just decided to buy. I did not want to do all that pre-sanding like the old days, with kids in house. Hope my new Wagner sprayer give me the same results. Thanks for video!!

    If you were spraying up against something that you wanted super clean lines, do all of your painting everywhere else & spray your tape lines on the surface that’s important last. Pull your tape at a almost 180 degree angle away while the paints wet for a perfect line. If you are doing multiple coats one thing to do is tape up close but not to the line with your tape & plastic or paper, close enough so you can hand tape the cut line & only have to pull the tape by itself. Then when it drys you only have to cut up against with tape again while your protective tape combo stays in place. Great video! Graco is hands down the best spray company on earth. USA!! All Day!

    I bought the same sprayer (corded) months ago to spray a couple of pergola's in the backyard. The project started great but quickly turned bad, clogs and spitting and sputtering. I gave up and went to the roller thinking, this sprayer was a waste of money. After watching your videos, it appears (I already knew I was the problem, lol) that I did every wrong thing possible. Your videos are excellent, not wordy and get quickly to the point. Likely these videos are a time consuming, so thanks for making them. Regards

    What a bummer that your sprayer didn’t work well for you. Was your paint brand new and free of chunks? Did you try to clear the clogged tip by turning the tip 180 degrees and flushing the tip out? It usually does the truck if I ever get a clog. The orifice in these sprayer tips is so small, the tiniest little piece of debris can cause huge headaches for sure. I usually run all my paint through a filter before I spray it if I have used the can before. Try that out before your next project and let me know how it goes.

    I have a Graco also and after watching this vid I see that all I need is the smaller tip to do the cabinets. This makes a very labor intensive job much easier. I didn't see your prep video, did you use liquid sand or what for the prep. Had to sub for this.

  • @buildwithbc

    @buildwithbc

    4 жыл бұрын

    You don’t have to use liquid prep if you use Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer. You can lightly scuff the surface and then just wash everything down with soapy water. Sherwin Williams says you don’t need to scuff with their primer. I have used the primer and find no need to scuff the surfaces prior to paint. Get that smaller tip and paint away. The results you’ll get with your Graco airless sprayer are amazing when coupled with Sherwin Williams paints.

    That is a Laundry room?? Love the design and simplicity of it. I'm looking to do the same kind of thing in my house. Did you use a computer program to design the layout? Also great video on the graco sprayer. Ive been on the fence in purchasing one mainly because of mixed reviews and wasn't sure if I wanted corded or cordless. Not going to be spraying polys or any combustibles through here so I don't think I need the Ultramax. Was surprised these units didn't have more positive reviews. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the cordless though. Great video hope to hear back from you regarding that Laundry room and really looking forward to seeing the finished product. Stay safe and God bless.

    Yes, believe it or not, it’s a laundry room! I didn’t design it myself as it came this way when we bought the home new from Lennar Homes. I have seen poor reviews for the sprayer from people but I have not had a bad experience with it. I find it incredible handy to have in my tool arsenal. I bought the cordless unit for ease of portability. Almost all of my tools are cordless now and it’s just so convenient. I already use Dewalt tools for most everything so it made it really easy to stay on the same battery platform. I should really post a video of the laundry room all finished now. I’ll have to get that done for sure.

  • @buildwithbc

    @buildwithbc

    3 жыл бұрын

    The SW paint has held up really well. I use this in kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms and garages and it holds up to the abuse. My son accidentally pulled a shop vac across the face of our laundry room cabinets leaving black plastic melted into the door. I used a magic eraser to remove the black plastic and the cabinet looks like nothing ever happened. It’s not bullet proof by any means but I love using it. One thing I will address is that it takes longer to dry and cure than an oil based paint. It remains slightly tacky for a day or two depending on temp and humidity. I left some finger prints in the paint on some doors when I first started using it because I handled it a little too soon. As far as paint consumption that will totally depend on how thick you lay on the paint and primer. The tip you use also plays into it all as well. A wider tip will waste more paint than a narrow tip. My suggestion would be to buy one gallon of each and see how far it goes with the first coat. No matter what, you have to wait a day before you flip your doors over so you should have a really good idea of how much you used on the first pass. I would go grab another gallon if you use fed more than half the gallon on the first run. Did that help at all?

    I just installed some judges paneling in our dining room and bathroom. I used a tempered hardboard backer and MDF trim and moldings. In the bathroom, I brushed cover stain primer and then a latex paint over the top and it was the biggest mistake I made. Even thinning the paint with FLO, I have brush marks everywhere and it looks awful. I decided to try a sprayer for the dining room. Have you sprayed latex through this unit and still obtained a smooth finish? What nozzles would you recommend for that? I would like to try the urethane paint for a cabinet like finish, but between 2 kids that won’t be able to stay away from the walls, along with a wife with bad asthma, i don’t think I can swing it. I can deal with latex paint so long as it doesn’t have a brush or orange peel finish.

  • @buildwithbc

    @buildwithbc

    3 жыл бұрын

    I spray latex through the airless all the time. You don’t even have to buy one if you don’t want to. Home Depot will rent an airless sprayer to you if you have one nearby. Most latex paints have the tip suggestions on the can. I have found that I get the best results when I go down a size or two from the recommendation. You won’t have to thin the paint at all if you use an airless either which is a huge plus. Believe it or not the urethane doesn’t have a stronger odor than the latex. You probably don’t need the urethane for a wall though. Either paint will serve you well. One suggestion would be to sand out those brush marks if you really want that smooth look. Hope this helps and best of luck with your project. I hope it turns out just the way you want.

    @@tomp1279 latex paint gets really soft and easily begins to peel up and create tiny rolls/balls of paint if it gets heated up while you sand it. Take your time when you are sanding down those brush marks or it can get pretty frustrating. Most orbital sanders will make a pretty quick mess of things because of the heat they create while sanding. I have to say I learned this one the hard way!!

    Steven, I’m just a homeowner too. I’m in an office all day for my regular job. The fun starts when I get home each day and then all day every Saturday! To answer your question, I’d buy the X5 if I could have just one. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but the X5 can do everything you’d ever want to do it’s just less portable. I’d recommend you get a Graco RacX guard for it though so you can use the Fine Finish tips for painting cabinets. Lately I’ve been using the Fine Finish 212 tip to spray primer and the Fine Finish 208 tip to spray the paint and the results have been amazing. Many people say you have to use an HVLP sprayer on cabinets to get good results. It simply isn’t true. I have painted cabinets both ways and with the Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane paint, I can’t even tell the difference and I am very much a perfectionist. Have fun with your projects!

    It kind of depends on how much you want to spray and how long between spraying. The X5 has a hose that fills with paint and thus waste every time you clean up. The Graco TC Pro has a cup that has all the air removed. You can set it aside and cap the container and clean up with a separate container. If you are using $70/gal paint, that may make a difference if you are doing cabinets and baseboard for a whole house. As a home owner, I do one room at a time, then move contents, mask and tape, then spray, so many small jobs.

    I just bought a Graco Ultra model 17M359 which is the corded model. On my paint can it says to spray at 2000psi and use a tip 013 to 017. in your video you said you were using a 212 FF tip .012 and you said you turned your pressure down to around 1000 psi. With that tip and pressure you set you said you still had runs in a couple spots. I'm building custom cabinet for a customer can you tell me what setting for pressure on your gun you used and also why do you think you got several runs in your paint. when setting the pressure to 1/2 of what the paint can says to spray at how can the spray gun spray the thicker paint. I think I heard you mention on another video that you go down 2 tip sizes from what the paint mfg says. Also, what tip are you using for the primer and then if you are spraying on a clear coat which tip. Thank you

    Tom, All great questions. I had a couple runs in my paint because I was spraying with a 315 tip in a tight place and I didn’t move my sprayer along quick enough. I was also a bit impatient and didn’t wait as long as I should have before I came back and added a second coat. As far as pressure and tips go, you’ll need to experiment. I know that doesn’t help you much but it’s the real answer here. I do usually go down a few tip sizes from the recommendation on the can. It’s a personal preference for me, nothing more than that. I use a 212FF tip to spray the Extreme Bond Primer and I use a 210FF or a 208FF to spray the enamel. Those are just my preferences. After you select the tip you want use, you start at the lowest pressure on your gun and keep adjusting it up until the spray fan is nice and even for end to end. It took a while for me to find the right combo that works the way I wanted it to. I bought several different tips and practiced on scraps until I found the combination that works for me.

    I use anywhere from a 208FF tip to a 212FF tip when spraying the Emerald Urethane Enamel. I use a 212FF when spraying the Extreme Bond Primer.

    Like I said your style is the best for me cus you arent using oil primer, shellac or lacquer. No one can resist that unbearable and harmful smell, especially if there are clients who stay at home even more in times of pandemic. Thank you!

    I’m all about staying away from oil based products for so many reasons. This combo works for me every time. The water based paint does take longer to cure than oil based but it’s a trade I am ok with.

  • @buildwithbc

    Bill, I wait over night before I gently handle the painted pieces when I use the SW urethane. It’s takes a day or two before I handle them for installation. It definitely cures slower than an oil based paint but once it cures, it’s extremely durable.

    FYI I just used the SW Emerald urethane trim enamel and it still wasn’t dry 2 days later. I could scrape the paint off with my fingernail. I called SW and they said the more pigment in the paint the slower the dry time. Well I was painting black.. I found I really had to leave that paint alone. Even after a couple of days it could show fingerprints.

    It is a laundry room believe it or not. I did remove the standard laundry room sink and I installed a hair washing sink for my wife. She is a cosmetologist and works from home. Luckily our laundry room was large enough for us to have it double as her salon here at home so she can be home with the kids and still work as much as she wants to.

  • @buildwithbc

    @buildwithbc

    3 жыл бұрын

    I am not sponsored by anybody. I am just a guy that loves to do things myself and I created this channel to share what I have learned over the years. The Extreme Bond primer from SW is water based. It’s extremely thick and covers over everything I’ve thrown at it so far. It bonds to everything including glass. I have painted everything from raw oak, pine, poplar, maple, and MDF with absolutely zero issues. I have painted over many different woods that were stained and finished of all colors and tints all with great results. I am by no means saying this is the best way or only way to tackle painting cabinets. I am just sharing what has worked for me. I am all for learning from others on new techniques and approaches and do not think I know everything. Feel free to DM me on IG @buildwithbc to share any pics of what you are trying to do and I’ll be happy to help you if I’ve done it and share how it went for me. Each time I paint another cabinet I get better, work to improve my process and hopefully the outcome.

    I forgot to mention, you can take a door off your cabinet and take it to SW and explain to them what you want to do. They can walk you through the products and process to get the results you are looking for.

    Me, I would’ve hand-painted the frame. Would’ve taken less time. All that overspray-waste of product (I HATE waste), on a surface that is neither touched nor discerned like doors and drawer-fronts are. If it’s less than four inches, grab a brush.

    @@buildwithbc On my paint can it says 013 to 017 spray tip, I'm not sure which tip to use, it also says to spray at 2000psi. I see on this video he says he sprays at about 1000 psi when using FF tips. I'm confused how can a thicker paint be sprayed out of a smaller tip size at less pressure. I bought Sherwin Williams paint that Lowe's sells it's their top of the line but made by Sherwin Williams. Thanks. Also which spray pressure would you spray at, my Ultra gun has a setting starting at 1 to 10, I assume 10 is equal to 2000psi.
