How to paint animals in line and wash - Great Dane dog
Ойын-сауық
Line and wash is a speedy and fun way of painting the animals and pets which are important in your life, especially the dogs you love. Whether you start with watercolour first or pen, you can capture their personality and character. We are trying for more than a coloured in drawing or an outlined painting, but want the ink and watercolour to bring their best qualities to our painting.
In this demonstration, I will be painting a gorgeous dog - a Great Dane and you can find the reference on Pixabay, so there are no copyright issues: pixabay.com/photos/great-dane...
I start with loose and lively washes of watercolour and once they are dry, I add lines using black fine liner technical pens. These have waterproof, lightfast ink and you might know them as Microns....
If you like line and wash you might be interested in my latest book called 'Line and Wash Painting', which was published in January 2022 by The Crowood Press (www.crowood.com) and if you want more in depth training please check out my line and wash course over at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk.
This is the link to The Book Depository (not affiliate) which does free worldwide shipping out of the UK: www.bookdepository.com/Line-W...
I release a film each week here on KZread sharing a waterolour tip or technique, usually at 2pm. So please like and subscribe and hit the notification bell. If you have a topic your would like me to make a film about, please leave your suggestion in the comments.

I loved this video and downloaded the photo of the dog thinking I might have a go sometime. Last evening it called very loudly and I did a painting. I didn’t revisit the video and choose the wrong paper so it is not light and lovely like yours but it’s OK. Your new book has inspired me to be more adventurous. Big thank you!! Diana

Hi, loved this, such fun yet still showing the importance of tonal values. The orange and 'strange' blue really complement each other. The eye is a real standout focal point. Thanks for showing this experimental pen and wash portrait. Take care and I look forward to your next video, Cate.

@@LizChadertonArt , I'm coming from the stamping & card making world. So, all these years, my images have had the outlines. For me, it just seems natural that they are there. It makes it feel complete. Plus, doing the ink first makes it more like color by numbers which tends to dispel some of my fears.
@LizChadertonArt

@@taylors726 the fun thing is to try the same subject both ways, line first or wash first, and see where it takes you
This is wonderful. When I try to use pen on top of watercolour they seem to stop working. I use uni pin fine line. I enjoyed this demonstration. Thank you for posting.

If your paint is quite thick or quite chalky, it can clog the pen. You can just scribble on a scrap piece to unclog it. If you are finding this happening maybe try to use more staining colours which sink into the paper rather than sit on the surface?
This is a wonderful video. Thanks so much. You’ve encouraged me to give this type of art a go! Time to order your book.

This is wonderful. I like the idea of putting pen on top of the watercolour but mine seem to clog up or stop working - I use uni pin fine-line. Thank you for the demonstration. I enjoyed it.

It does sometimes happen - if so, try to select colours which don't sit on the surface of the paper. The earth colours and ones with fillers are more likely to clog than staining transparent colours.
Wow. I really want to purchase one of your books. What is the most user friendly? I’m hoping to challenge my beginner level and promote some growth.

Hullo Liz, I was enjoying watching the video until I saw the additional text lines, I had trouble reading the text I missed most of the endings, it is not because it was hard to see but I was concentrating on the brushwork and your voice! Could you mention or list the pen brand in the description area? I have done this ink over technique about 20 years ago, I believe that you created a wonderful portrait of your dog! Do you often augment your voice with text lines? I am very new to your channel and your videos. Thank you for sharing and reminding us of this technique to create a purposeful loose portrait! Have a lovely day!

Hi, it is a lovely way of working isn't it? Yes, I usually put text lines to reinforce what I have said, for anyone who doesn't speak English well and for those who are hard of hearing. I try to keep them short, but sometimes the list of colours is long and so the text gets small. I assume people will pause if they don't catch it as I realise there can be a lot going on! It isn't new info, so please feel free to ignore 😃
May I ask what the make of your ink pens are please.
@LizChadertonArt
2 жыл бұрын
If you are in the UK they were just Hobbycraft's own range. You are looking for ones with pigment ink, as they are lightfast and waterproof. Micron, Derwent, Unipin, Rotring, Sakura.... they are all much of a much. Just google fineliner pens.

It depends on what style of painting you aspire to, but on my workshops (inc beginners) I give this brush plus tge 3/0 ( equivalent to a size 8 round), a rigger size 2, a 1/4 inch flat plus a 3/4 flat and I reckon those will keep you going from beginner to expert! @@waynemason2076
