How to paint a Watch Bezel

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi Guys, this is a short video on how I paint a watch bezel to restore it back into use again.
I show how I remove the old paint and apply the new. This is a really simple job to be honest and anyone can take it on.

Nice work Michael. I've used that technique on the decorative incising/engraving on Ansonia enamel clocks (made from cast metal) cases. It works fairly well. I would remove the "over paint" with a silky type rag, i.e., one with a very small nap, after the paint had set for a while (hour). Any stubborn paint remaining could easily be removed with the same cloth dampened "ever so slightly" with acetone. I used this technique on the incising on golf irons, also, to make them look like new.

Kool, thanks 😎 it's funny how surprisingly well the paint and wipe method Works in a variety of situations. And for that matter you can even color code your dezell with a couple different colors if you want for more functionality and it makes things a little easier on your eyes for quicker acquisition. On another note I really liked the music from the first time lapse and was almost hoping to hear a little Jim Byrnes as he's an incredible Blues musician.

I do exactly what you do but I use an oil based paint pen for my Vostoks although I got caught out when I saw two marking sets on a 060 cased Amphibia were missing so studiously painted 'em in to find out they were supposed to be en flute so to speak so had to pick all the little markings all over again hehe. Am wearing a Seiko tonite, arrived today a Epson branded piece with a very Hi quality quartz Seiko (not Sii either but Seiko marked) chrono and a super thick calfskin strap. Has the high hand function where the main second hand is the chrono hand and I like them as my Miyota powered Oskar-Emil has a high hand so will be doing a vid on this and some acquisitions etc.

I customize a lot of bezels by filling the indent’s with a lume and clear fingernail polish. My blue and green are both white in day but I have an orange and a gray day green blue glow. Done lost of dive watches and quit a few chronographs like a Daytona fill in the tachameter around the bezel. Luckily most I do are naked and I don’t have to remove any old paint.

That was going to be my approach. Used a bamboo skewer this evening to mix and have a test paint to get the colour right. Took my car into the bodywork repair centre & asked the owner if I could get some touch up paint for chips, he presented me with two bottles, paint and a clearcoat laquer. Suggested application method, a wooden tooth pick.

  • @TheTarrMan

For that area around the lume pip try using a hypodermic needle/syringe to flood the recess. It will allow for better control of the paint and make a sharper paint line. In the United States you have to ask the pharmacist for a bag of syringes and they'll ask you what size you need. I think a 21 gauge would work but if you get something to small the paint will be to thick to suck up. It may also be helpful to lightly sand/grind the tip to a squared blunt end. These are great for oiling as-well but you have to be carful you don't use to much. Only suck up how mush oil you want to apply. One jewel at a time. (Cheap alternative to a automatic oiler.)

If you use a wooden block with a damp acetone tissue wrapped round it, you should be able to clean up the edges of the luminous part in the same way you did the numbers, but with the flat block you won't dip into the middle ... you might also consider using a sticker over the luminous dot that you can peel off once the paint has started to go off but before it hardens.

Hi Michael! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I plan to craft lacquer dials and i was wondering if using enamel and baking it would be the right approach. Why baking? i thought it would make the paint more durable and make the flush sanding possible. Usually when sanding metal with paint tiny metall flakes get pushed into the "soft" paint ruining the results. So baked enamel paint! Would love to get your feedback on this topic. thx

I know this is an old video, but wouldn't just replacing the bezel insert yield better results since they're relatively inexpensive? Or am I missing the point?

It’s not an insert the numbers are stamped into the steel. Finding a new bezel for this model would be difficult.

What paint did you use?.. also it’s a lot of work when you can buy a new ceramic bezel for seikos!... as this bezel is scratched as anything and would bug the hell out of me!..

  • @MyRetroWatches

I doubt you would get a bezel for this one other than a new OEM which is available. Its a watch I think from the 90s and I used it to demonstrate how you can repaint the numbers. effort was little and time was not a lot. result was pleasing. If scratches bug you then you would not like the vintage watches Seiko has to offer. For me I prefer a vintage to modern any day of the week. We are all different and thats what I love and respect.
