I work as a painter. I have a few other tips for you. First, use blue painters tape or frog tape. Not regular green or the other colours, definitely never white masking tape. It has to be the high end frog-brand green tape or the royal blue generic tape. Generally speaking, masking tape is colour coded. Different colours use different glues, some stick longer/stronger/weaker, or they dry out sooner. Blue tape and frog tape are by far the best for this type of work. White is fine on glass, but usually too sticky for painting. The rainbow colours are generally used by contractors and other trades as a post-it, that way they can colour code who left the tape Second, give the first paint colour at least 24 hours to dry before putting tape on it. We mostly think of paint drying, but there is a curing process as well. If you apply tape before the chemical reactions have happened, the paint might stick to the tape better than it does to the wall, and you’ll peel off your fresh paint when you pull off the tape. This goes double if you have fresh plaster or drywall Painting over the tape works, but it’s more time consuming. It’s not how I do it myself. If you use blue/frog tape and are careful with your brushwork it won’t bleed. I usually cut almost up to the tape, then only do one quick pass right on the tape to get it solid, being careful to never brush towards the tape. Bushing towards the tape literally pushes the paint into the seam, it increases the chance of bleeding by more than you would think. Then I roll over it without cutting at all for the second coat (rolling pushes down, not side to side, so it won’t typically bleed, unless you use the wrong tape or don’t squish it down well enough). It often helps to remove the tape as soon as you’re done cutting, but I don’t usually find that strictly necessary if you use the right tape and are careful not to brush into it. I’ve done a rainbow 3D-cube geometric mural on a cinder block wall, the only bleeding was where there were deep pits in the blocks. One 15’ wall had 30 colours on it, it had hundreds of lines that needed masked off. There was no way in hell I was going to go over each of the lines an extra time. It would have added hours to the job, and since the colours were custom mixed in small batches it would have made it a lot more complicated. Sometimes you just need to get it right the first time. That’s where the right tape and a good technique comes in

Thank you for the additional advices! I would say they are especially helpful when you have old pain and you have no idea what color was used there, or it just faded. + sometimes it just doesn't make sense to buy new paint just for the first coat to avoid bleeding(extra useless paint and extra money). There's no way you can use a method in the video for the old paint, but your advices will actually minimise the damage without additional fuss!

Thanks for the comment! Have you tried to slightly wet the frog tape to help the adhesion? I read that it activates the chemical. And if you're painting multiple coats, and waiting perhaps 24 hours between coats, will the tape pull off the paint since it's been there for that long? Also, when you mentioned "I usually cut almost up to the tape..." are you brushing or using a roller almost to the tape but not on it, then you take a roller right over the tape so it's flat against it?

It would be great to see a video on how to clean up after DIY, specifically how to correctly clean brushes and tools so that paints, stains, and other chemicals are properly disposed of. What can be washed down the sink? What can't? What's the most efficient way to clean up so that water isn't wasted? Love the series - Rochelle is great!

One of my favorite restaurants had an interesting color blocking pattern on all of the walls. 2 nice neutral brown-beiges, and then painter tape width and color blue in between them. It looked like they painted the 2 colors, and someone saw the painters tape and thought that was part of it, or really liked it, and then had the blue stripe added later.

Owner/painter of a painting company 25 years. When painting..You can make it so that your brush feels just like an extension of your hand. I wrap my hand over the metal base that holds the bristles in place between my pointer finger and thumb I find I have more control over it. where you never have to use tape again. ( for cutting your walls at ceilings and trim etc :) ) As per the best brush to use. I strongly suggest you spend some money on this tool. Not just the cheapest one or what looks best because a great brush helps cut straight lines, smooths feathering and good brushes have softer bristles that can get into every curve. I use the wise grandfather of them all lol … The Purdy! 2 1/2 inch angle brush. I find that size and shape to be the best for different paint jobs :))! And paint … There are many brands of great paints out there to choose from. You just have to avoid cheap paints..the Walmart brand being one they are a waste of time and money because of how often you will need to touch it up or having to buy better paint . The regular line /cost paints at hardware stores or paint shops etc. is just fine I use them most often. the top of the line Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams paints Just aren’t worth the extra money

You don't need to paint with the body color! I ran a test on a textured wall and painted a perfect line. Going off of @danielleboon1543 comment below and added a few things: 1) Use green frog tape, then use a lightly damped towel and wet the edge of the frog tape to get the chemical in the tape to react. 2) Push down on the tape with a credit card or your finger so there are no gaps or greases in the tape for the paint to seep through. Dry off the tape so it's not wet anymore. 3) Now paint up to the tape but not on your line. So about 1/8" away from the tape approximately. 4) Now take a brush and paint down over the line. You're painting down so you're not pushing the paint up into the tape. Use a light amount of paint. Let dry for about two hours. 5) Now apply your 2nd coat. Use a roller if you prefer. Wait about an hour and peel off the tape at a 45-degree angle. And there you go a perfect line!
