Paul, hello from the USA. Great change of pace subject. I really enjoy paintings with trees, water, interesting skies, and of course...people. This one has them all. I love your attention to the sky more than most professionals. Most of them just put a bland sky like its really not important to the painting. I think you are the Bob Ross of watercolor artists...great teacher, great videos with a sense of humor and great editing, and a great selection of subjects. Not to mention the available PDFs for download for those who just want to get right to painting. Happy new year to you for your inspiration.

I’m trying to illustrate a children’s book. The story all happens in the wooded area. There is a river, but no boats. But there are people in this really helped me gain understanding of how to paint up to the people and then conclude by painting them. Thanks a bunch, Elizabeth at Banfill Crossing

But u get right down to the painting w no boring conversation like many. And when u do converse about an artist or whatever. Its always entertaining. Thank you. I see lots of videos on color theory and I understand what colors to mix to make other colors but actually handling the paint is never addressed. Do you mix your colors right from the tube? Do you dip the brush in water first and mix the diluted paint? If so, how do I get the darker values? I see you first add washes then add darker values of the same mixed color. How??? It is probably really simple but I’ve yet to find instruction for it.

Thank you; can't wait to TRY this sketch. I always go to the comedy; after all the "no more snow, more snow, please, stop the damned snow!" you present this wonderful scene on water, spring or summer. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SCREAM if when you got out the gouache you had started splattering snow!!! Bahahahahahaha! In the theatre we would call that (or they used to back when I was performing with the Flintstones) a "sight gag" or something close to a sight-gag. I can amuse myself all day long.

Hi Paul, I jumped in and tried this Winsor Homer painting and really enjoyed trying this looser style and I think mine turned out pretty good. It's very different than the botanical techniques I have been learning for 3 years under another UK artists online school. I have looked around your site and love it! I plan on trying many of your paintings to learn how to apply your techniques to my own photos. Like you, whenever I take photos in nature I always have composed them with the idea of painting them someday. I have done a few landscapes using the tighter botanical methods I have learned, but I really enjoyed painting your canoe painting much more than any of the ones I have done so far. You have broken my block - I was about ready to just stop painting. I love learning new things - your videos have inspired me to paint again! Thank you so much!

I’m gonna have to watch this again from the beginning since I had to keep getting up to let my cats out, then back in, than back out. I guess they couldn’t make up their minds. As always you make me laugh, you teach me something new, and now I even have a new song I like and want to share with my husband. I have so much more to say but my cat wants back in. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Love too that you paint the great paintings of others your style. I have still to do one of your paintings but have it all drawn out. Wishing you and yours all the best for 2022...

I love this series for many reasons, one of them being you showcasing how you can copy another artists' painting, while putting your own unique style to it. It's very reassuring to those of us being afraid to copy artwork in the hopes of getting better and developing a unique style. So thank you very much for that! The tutorials are as amazing as ever. If i could suggest a topic for a how to - tutorial: I live by a lake and the shore is mainly tiny stones. Could you show us, how to best paint thousands of little stones, without labouring for says? Have a great new year Paul and Margaret!

It is a time honored way to learn copying masters to help you see how they produce the effects you admire. Fascinating to see the sequence in the application & you are so great at making viewers feel relaxed. I am in awe of your seemingly chaotic early splashes evolving into a coherent picture.

Hi Paul, it would be nice to see more tutorials inspired by different artists, and know who inspires you as an artist. I am still a beginner, and have decided to learn to paint with watercolors after visiting great exhibition of J.M.W. Turner's paintings (oils and watercolours) few years ago. I just wanted to capture such beautiful sunsets and sunrises (or just light) like him (no matter with some boat in them or not). And I'm still learning :) I'm really grateful for your help in that.

I really enjoyed this type of video. It's really interesting to learn about some of the early artists and who inspire you. I think a lot of people think or even have been told that you need to come up with your original work and don't copy others work ( I definitely understand this is your copying it exactly and then selling as your own.) If your able to ask the artist or if the artist says you can copy their pieces to practice or just to follow is ok as well. Anyway have a great day.
