United recommends packing dishes in a dishpack, which is sturdier than a typical packing box and is used for fragile items such as dishes and collectibles.
1. Use packing paper to wrap and stack plates in bundles up to 4.
2. Wrap your bowls in packing paper, stacking them in bundles of 2 to 3.
3. Wrap china separately before bundling.
4. Individually wrap each glass and mug in packing paper.
5. Wrap the stem of a wine glass with a folded sheet of paper. Then, wrap the wine glass in packing paper.
6. Wrap items with lids, such as teapots, in paper. You’ll then use additional paper to create a bundle.
7. Before placing your items into the dishpack or box, line it with crumpled paper for extra padding.
8. Start packing with the heaviest items first at the bottom of the box.
9. Place bundles of plates and bowls on their side.
10. Use cardboard to divide layers in the dishpack.
11. Assemble the cell divider and place into dishpack.
12. Pack glasses, stemware, as well as collectibles or other breakables, into the cell divider.
13. Once the box is filled, close and seal it with several layers of packing tape.
