How To Overhaul Shimano 333 FA 3-Speed Hub

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I show how to disassemble, clean, lube, and re-assemble a Shimano 333 FA three speed hub. I also show how to install the wheel and adjust the shift cable. You can replace the bearings if they need it. In the video I use a Shimano TL-3S20 Ball Cup Removal Tool. I plan to do another video showing how to rebuild this type of hub without the special tool.

A good source for the missing pin you had to leave out is your local hardware store. When engineers design a piece of hardware they try to use common sizes as much as possible. Between fraction, letter, number, and metric size drill bits you can usually find a very close match. The shank usually isn't hardened and is the same size as the fluted end. A propane torch or even the burner on a gas fed kitchen range will provide enough heat to harden and temper such tiny parts if they need it.

Just took my 333 hub apart and serviced it all. couldn't have completed it without watching this video twice . Still had a little trouble with the master hub Pawls not seating properly against the wheel hub shell. I noticed that the shifter rod would not move when things were not seated properly . I can't believe that I could still buy the shell hub tool . Video really is step by step .

Curtis, I had the same problem with the master hub Pawls not seating properly against the wheel hub shell. It all seemed to go back together fine, but it wouldn't shift. Difficult to see the problem. I finally figured it out last night and got it to work. I couldn't find the tool anywhere online so I made one out of the large nut from a ball trailer hitch.

Re-assembly did not go well & ended up breaking a pawl and spring so I ordered these & a few extra parts off ebay. Unfortunately, those Shimano 3 speed hubs are not as robust as the Sturmey Archer hubs. They had to redesign the whole thing so as not to infringe on any of SA's patents.

This is the hub I had in my "Dragster" style bike I had as a child in the early 1970's (they were called that in Australia but I believe they were called wheelie bikes in the US). +Henry Byrd Shimano had to reengineer the thing to avoid violating Sturmey Archer's patents. The Shimano version isn't as good and as more prone to breaking. They improved in later models. The Sturmey Archer AW model is a solid model and last longer than you and I.

+RJ The Bike Guy: I have serviced many Sturmey Archer hubs but never a Shimano. By sheer coincidence I got one for £1.50 at a Car boot sale in the UK this morning. Your clip will be invaluable when I take it apart. I have one problem already. I do not have the Shimano tool to remove the ball ring. I am an "old school" guy and avoid "special" tools whenever possible so I will have to work out an alternative method to separate it from the hub casing. The hub is not in a wheel which will make it more difficult.

Hi RJ, I am rejuvenating a 70's era Kuwahara Apollo bike that's in pretty good shape. It has this model 3spd hub. I will have to replace the shifting cable but it looks pretty specialized with the lugs on both ends and a precise length. Do you have any suggestions on building a DIY replacement cable? Can a regular cable work, and have you ever tried to put a lug on the end of the cable so it will not pull out (in this case, the adjustment barrel at the lower end)?

They sell replacement cables for three speed setups. You can't easily just use a regular cable.

Hi Rj I noticed in the description you said you were planning on making a video on overhauling this hub without a special tool. Is that still something you are thinking of doing? It would be such a life saver for me. Hope to hear back from you. Thanks

The 2 slot keys in my hub are the same length, I was given the hub so I don/'t know when the last time was it shifted correctly. It appears to be the same model as the one in the video but can't be sure as I can't find any ID marks. Should I grind one of the keys shorter or is there a model out there that uses 2 identical keys? I know earlier Shimano hubs used a single t shaped key.

Hello RJ The Bike Guy ! I am working on a bike with the same hub and have been having shifting problems. It is a bike from the 60's maybe even the 50's but the workings on this hub are identical to your video. When I followed your video, at 18:20 , you remove a bearing race. My race had a deformation on one of the tabs that separate the ball bearings. Hoping to maybe find one at our custom bike shop, the older tech there said "ya that race is damaged, we don't even see these hubs anymore". He took a screwdriver and pried it out and then gave me the same size ball bearings ( new ) to put back in. He said "just pack it with grease to keep the balls in". I figured he knew what he was talking about so I did just that. Should I continue re-assembling the hub or is this going to damage something else ? If it is a bad idea do you have any idea as to where I might be able to buy this bearing ? Secondly, when we were kids way back riding these bikes I was pretty sure that you had to pedal backwards to shift gears. Or was that a bad idea/ misconception back then ? Thanks for any help you can give to this novice. An EXCELLENT video by the way !

Nah. you can replace the bearings in a cage. I prefer to replace the whole caged bearing. There are some kickback hubs that backpedal to shift. Not all of them are like that. Not this one.
