I'm with Erik, except that I did manage somehow to maintain control of my coffee. 41??? I thought you were like 33 or something. I used to get such pre-race jitters when I was IRL racing years ago. And yes it got to the point where I quit because I had gotten really pack shy due to a few really bad crashes, none of which were my fault. Odd circumstances. Now when I get nerves I just use them to my advantage and use the built up energy. As far as a warm up I tend to do well with a 5-mile warm-up; some zone 3 and 4 and throw a 5 in there and then back to Zone 2 for the last 10 minutes. I think it's more of a mental thing because I know I had a good warm-up. I think you're an all-arounder and that's the most dangerous kind of racer. You are steadily getting better at everything. Eighth place! What a wonderful race you had, my friend.

Thanks Linda you’re too kind 🙂 I definitely feel like I’m over 40! I like how you use the nerves to your advantage, I will definitely embrace them more! You’re absolutely right and I’ve never really thought about it but maybe one of the reasons I get nervous is because my warm up is so basic and doesn’t really prepare me for what’s coming. Thank you so much for your support as always Linda 🙂

Great race Olly, very smart finish. I think that a few pre race nerves aren’t a bad thing. You’re right that this is “just” Zwift racing but a lot of us probably invest quite a lot of time training and racing on the platform so why reasonable that it matters? I’m normally running around with no more than 15 minutes to warm up so I’ll just ride at zone 2 and join 5 minutes before the start. I definitely feel “better” if I can squeeze about 10k in beforehand but that rarely happens. Thanks again for all the output, really nice to see some different races featured on here.

Thanks Andrew, appreciate that mate 👍🏻 Yeah I agree, I invest a lot of time on Zwift and in my mind it’s just the same type of nerves as if I was outside racing! I’m definitely the same as you when it comes to the warm up, I get worried that if I do too much then I won’t have energy for the race! I’ll try a longer warm up and see how that goes 👍🏻 appreciate you kind words, I’ll keep putting some alternative races in🙂

One last thought. This course should be right in your wheelhouse. Your 1 to 2 minute power is really good. Better then mine. The challenge is that long dragging climb.

  • @notpogi

I didn’t think I had that good 1-2 min power, maybe I’m just being really lazy! It’s the effort and recovery I struggle with and I get super scared that I’m going to blow up early… I think I may need to change my tactics going forward… appreciate the advice mate 👍🏻

@@notpogi I wouldn't call it lazy. You have a big sprint. Knowing how long the effort will be ahead of time and your power numbers will help you measure your efforts. Of course, you need to adjust on the fly depending on the pace of the group. All of the climbs on this course are under 2 minutes

Well done Ollie good power at the end holding 400 watts strong stuff Now pre race nerves yes think we all get them my routine is 2 bottles of drink electrolytes, gummy bears because I like them😂 then a 💩 put bibshorts on realise I need another 💩then remember I’m not going to win and stop being so nervous. Warm up wise I do about 20 minutes easy riding zone 1-2 and a little high cadence work, don’t do short sprints and warming up to FTP as with everything I do I just say “yeah I’ll do it on the day”😂😂 great vid as usual and you definitely deserve the subscribers hope you hit 1k soon

The warm up sounds very familiar to mine mate just a bit longer - I’m also a bit like “yeah I’ll do it on the day” (hoping the reference is from Shaun of the dead which is one of my favourite films)! I try and get 30 minutes of warmup in. Zone 1 or 2 with a zone 4-6 ramp up every 3 to 5 minutes. 10 to 20 seconds of effort. I try and do different pushes. A gradual ramp, a sudden acceleration, a standing effort etc to test my legs. Back to zone 1-2 for the last 5 to 7 minutes.

@@notpogi I need that intensity otherwise my body and legs are shocked when the race starts. I used to do a really short warm up like you, thinking I was saving my legs for the race. I found I got dropped a lot if the start was spicy. Oh, and yes I plan on doing most if not all of the races.

Good racing Olly. Only thing I get nervous about is the fact I normally rush around to get on the bike 5 minutes before a big race and wonder why it takes me half of the course to warm up! 😂 Good going today and to play devils advocate today, I really think you could have pushed to say with that group, you say that the race was easy except for the climbs which your power graph suggest that, I guarantee if you’d put a little dig in to stay with that group, not only would you have been up there with the rest of the Cs the pace would have been similar and perhaps getting out of your comfort zone might help push you a little more I dunno? 1 more stage of FRR then I’ll be looking for something else to do so if you want a wheel in any of these races let me know, don’t want to do any serious racing for at least a month I’d say, it’s been hell these 21 stages! 😂

Thanks Ray, appreciate that mate 👍🏻 I thought you’d say that about pushing at the start a bit more!! I really should have given it everything, I keep getting this mental block that I’ll have nothing left for the rest of the race but I just need to go for it! I will 100% take you up on your offer of a wheel, I know it’s really give me some extra motivation! It’s such an amazing achievement to complete FRR, you’ve done amazing 👍🏻 I bet you can’t wait to have a few days off 👍🏻

@@notpogi haha that cause I’m a ride or die sort of guy! But all jokes aside I just look at it like training, that threshold push and recover the more you do it the more you’ll get better at it and I know we always want to be competitive but if you get dropped, you get dropped. Having raced against you in ZRL you’re much stronger than you think, just blow the doors off! I’ve registered on Chasing Tour website so I’ll sign up to some midweek and weekend races!

This course is a bit different for strategy because of the long recovery sections. If you can make a faster group, they will pull you away from your competition on the long flats. Just don’t blow yourself up 😂

Got to be honest, the racing doesn't interest me that much but similar to you, I love sitting on the sofa post-session, although I just add in all my metrics and KPIs to a spread sheet...I guess I'm just a training nerd 😂 Re your warm up, I'd definitely add in 4 or 5 Level 4/5 spin ups just to warn the body that some significant efforts are imminent
