    I am a scout leader and to my knowledge this explanation left the issue of declination totally out. There is a difference between true north and magnetic north. The meridian lines on the map show true north, the compass needle points to magnetic north. One must first adjust the compass to according to W or E declination to orient a map accurately.

    The Eastings do not point to True North. Only the sides of the map point to TN. The Eastings point to Grid North. You are correct about him not mentioning declination. Half measures can be a safety issue. He needs to complete a full video with declination. It would be one of the best on YT. Keeping it real. S

    FREAKING FINALLY!!! Somebody explains this in a perfectly, simple way. I can't tell you how many vids I watched, knowing I'd eventually trip on someone that could explain it to me the way I needed it. Thank you! Can you please take some time to work on a help-vid where say, you're in the woods with the family, you need to go hunting and you know it will take you possibly miles from your camp. How can you take off, perform the hunt and all that goes with that, and still be able to find your way back using your compass and map, etc.? By the way, I'm not talking about driving there in my suv, I'm talking about living out there in case the stuff hits the fan kind of scenario.

    +Kurt Bennett It's basically the same as show in the vid Kurt. You must know your starting position on the map for any of this to work. Once you've taken your bearing, 180 degrees from that point is the direction of travel back from your destination. Or, from your destination you could simply keep the south end of the needle aligned with north on your compass. Using a ruler (commonly found on a compass) is the simplest way to measure distance/travel time on a map. Refer the map scale to figure out your distance. If 1cm = 5 miles and the distance between your current position and destination is 3cm's your distance would be 15 miles.

    People learn via different methods. This lesson connected with my brain so much better than the 30 other videos I watched. The creator of this vid has a natural talent for teaching. Thank you! I am subbing and will be searching the playlist to see if you made this into a series, or cover the advanced things we need to know. Edit: Sad to see that there are no recent vids, especially regarding orienteering. I will check out the older ones tho.

    This is how I learned to use a compass. The win about aligning the map along magnetic north is you don't have to mess with declination. The map is oriented to the compass, so even if the compass has flaws, so long as the flaws are consistent you can still get a good bearing.

Only 3 pieces of tools (pen, compass and map). Not to bash anyone but if you didn't like it or couldn't grab the concept then I would suggest you take a class or put down the compass :). • @PreppingItForward

    @PreppingItForward

    9 жыл бұрын

    carlsandersvip The magnetic declination for my area is 11 degrees West (negative declination). The compass used here doesn't have declination correction. Simply accounting for declination by repositioning the compass accordingly would make the correction. This was an introductory video with one example of how to orient a map and take a bearing. I didn't want to make things too complicated by including declination which is why I didn't include a scale on the map.

    Assuming you knew or marked the position from which you started and had an idea of the direction you were travelling and for how long, you would have a general idea of where you may be. Orient the map. Set the bearing from the general or current position back to the starting point. Keep the magnetic needle aligned with magnetic north and follow the direction of travel back. That would get you relatively close to where you started assuming the water was somewhat calm.

    Hey there. I'm a newbie when it comes down to this, so this might seem like a dumb question, but if your destination is 60° NE, do you keep the red arrow pointing at the N while you travel?

  • @PreppingItForward

    @PreppingItForward

    9 жыл бұрын

    xV13TCONGx Yes. You want to keep the magnetic needle aligned with the orienting arrow / north on the compass every you want to check your bearing or direction of travel. Generally you don't keep the compass aligned or out while walking. Set visual markers or way points in the distance by aligning the magnetic needle with the orienting arrow / north and walk to them. Good question...glad you asked.

    This is different than the other videos I've seen. This seems to orient the map to magnetic north and since your traveling direction is relative to magnetic north, to my understanding, there is no need to adjust for declination.

    WASRT Exactly. Lost in wild, with your GPS is only good while the batteries work. GPS devices are power hungry. A GPS left on, will work for about 24 hours, unless you have another pair of batteries on you. If you don't have batteries and you are really lost, and don't know how to use a compass, you might as well, dig your own grave. There have been reports of people putting to much trust on their GPS devices and randomly exploring an area only to wind up dead a week later. A compass can only find a bearing in the world; you need a physical map in conjunction with a compass to find location--a compass by itself will NOT give you a location.

    Good luck when your GPS goes tits up. I have the ordnance survey map app on my iPhone which works a treat but if and when batteries are no good your basically screwed with out a paper map and compass. I like GPS and map app because they give me a grid location instantly and if your in trouble that’s a good thing. I like paper map and compass because they are reliable

    While taking an bearing on a map it is much safer to use the compass as a protractor and not use the technique of using the needle. First it does not require map orientation and secondly it excludes any needle interference from metal etc.

    Gary Lee - in a nutshell this great video shows just orienting the map to magnetic north to take a bearing. The beauty of this technique is that it doesn't require knowing anything about True North or what the declination is - notice he never mentioned either terms. Orienting the map to magnetic north eliminates these complexities. These are still very important concepts however to understand in order to have a thorough understanding of map and compass navigation. Great video!

    Not so fast. You forgot about the magnetic declination, you need to set that up first thing, then you start orienting the map!

    It's not necessary to know declination if you consistently align the map to the compass. If you don't want to take a compass with you then draw new declination lines on the map before you take your walk...just take the map!

    NEGATIVE: !!! What you have done is align compass and map to magnetic North. The only location where this would work is for someone located on the agonic line where there is no magnetic error . At any other location where there is magnetic error compared to TRUE NORTH, your Declination, ( Declination being the angular difference between true North and Magnetic North) EAST or WEST, comes into the mix. To "orient" a map is to NOT to align the compass needle, which always points to Magnetic North (unless influenced by external forces) with a map meridian (unless on the agonic line) but local current Declination must be adjusted for. To "orient" a map is to turn or rotate map until the topographic features in real life agree with the location depicted on map, if a hill on my map is located 090 deg TRUE azimuth, my C.C. (compass course) after correction, plus or minus Declination, will agree with map azimuth, then all vertical lines will point to GRID NORTH sometimes called TRUE NORTH and NOT magnetic North which can be, depending on location, as much as 15 or 20 degrees or more in error when compared to a grid north-south line or line of Longitude. There are types of compass with variable declination adjustment capability that can be preset (East or West) to eliminate the addition or subtraction of Declination allowing the use of True North or meridian lines for angle or bearing measurement instead of Magnetic North as a reference.

    My declination is almost 17 West. By not mentioning declination you may have jeopardized someone's safety. Half explanations are not worth doing. You should have mentioned your technique could be off as much as 20 degrees depending where you are in the world. I will check if you have done a supplementary video. You did a great job otherwise. Keeping it real. S

    The huge flaw is after 7 years, you still didn’t make a video like you said to factor in declination. So this video is pointless for those that are unaware of how to really use a map and compass.

    There is no need to rotate the map to north just use the north south lines on the map with the red grid on the compass that is what its for. Also don't forget magnetic variation in your area.
