Let's face it, password organization is something you've put off since the internet was invented. It's time to do something about it!
How This Tutorial Works:
I'm going to show you where to go to extract all the saved usernames and passwords that are currently stored in your various web browsers. We're then going to merge that data together into a spreadsheet (you will need Excel, Numbers, or something similar). We'll then clean up that list and use it to replace the stored username/password data you have stored (regardless of where you store your passwords). This workflow works for EVERYTHING and truly puts you in control of your data.

David, This is by far the best suggestion I have seen for organizing passwords. I have tried 1Password but became frustrated. Maintaining a handwritten list is cumbersome. And trying to manage things by viewing passwords via Safari preferences does not work well. Exporting to Numbers (Excel) works beautifully...especially to find missing fields and duplicate fields. Corrections are easy and then just import them back into Safari. Delightful.

I followed all your instructions but but when I tried to import the updated password list, I got a message saying "Safari could not import passwords from the CSV file because it is missing column labels". I now ended up with all my passwords erased from my browser. Please help. When I open the file, I can see the column labels.

Super amazing video David and THANK YOU. There must be a humongous volume of accounts out there belonging to deceased people which will never be accessed again INCLUDING FINANCIAL AND CRYPTO. Frightening !!! Besides, logging in is the bain of my digital life. I resolve to get to grips with this material to smoothen out my on-line life. Thanks again.
David, you are a national treasure. I have watched your classes for years. Every topic you cover fills in an ignorance gap we’ve all had. Why didn’t Apple clarify all these things sooner? Those grayed out (non-functional) keys in Numbers should be corrected. I bought Excel and Word for my iMac and MacBook. You’d think Tim Cook would get on the ball. P.S. Congrats on the new relationship. Everybody greatly appreciates what you do. Don Scott

@Tech Talk America - Is there a reason you used Numbers even though you strongly suggested Excel? My version of Excel (I have a 2022 Mac) does not behave or show the sort options like you demonstrated while using Numbers.
Thank you!!!

Hi! Found the video to be useful. Just one question though: keeping all passwords in one easily accessible document seems insecure. Also, how can you pass on these passwords to loved ones if you pass away?
David - Excellent job! A much needed tutorial for nearly all of us (present company included)! At the beginning of your video, you mentioned other password managers. In addition to storing passwords in Safari, I also have some in LastPass. Is there a way to export passwords from that app as well?
@TechTalkAmerica

So glad you enjoyed it. In regards to your question about LastPass the only way they allow you to export the data is by logging into your account via the web. They supposedly send it to you via e-mail, but when I tried it, I ran into problems. Could have been an isolated incident.

Very helpful video - step by step walkthrough is great. But... did you ever find an easy work-around for Numbers' failure to allow the Find AND Replace function? (options remained greyed out). I had to save as a .csv, then open it with Excel, run the Find/Replace, then convert back to a Numbers file. Overall - appreciate your continued efforts.

I don’t personally use Firefox but I’m guessing the process is similar. Anytime I make a video I have to consider how deep to go into the topic and two browsers seemed like the right number.
David, unfortunately I am unable to follow your recommendations. I am unable to export my password data. I use an iPad Pro latest version. It doesn’t allow that function. I also have, but rarely use, an older iMac, 2010. Which similarly does not allow. Greyed out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had missed this comment till now. Thanks for the support. I don’t keep up with Googles products
That password list is sitting around un-protected where? Remember that each re-used or "bad" password has to be changed at every single account where it is currently in use.
The Problem is I have OSX Catalina ! And in the Keychain the Export option is greyed !
2 questions: do u really think its a good idea to store all those passwords in your browsers? and once you have this file w all ur passwords in it, where do u safe that file securely??
What to do if you dont have spreadsheets?
Looks great but I can't get past step 1 ------ When I unlock and list my passwords I do not see the three dots and therefore the "Export password "function.
Best wishes in your new relationship!

David, Very good advice as usual. There are two additions I'd also recommend doing: 1) 6:07 Before you delete any dead account, verify that the account for that web site was actually deleted. Try to log into that web site with the current username and password. 2) 9:30 When creating new passwords, instead of typing random characters for each, use a free password generator tool to be sure they all meet the common password rules (i.e. Contains an UPPER CASE LETTER, lower case letter, a number, and is at least 8 characters long). There are many free and safe random password generators available on the web, To find one, search for 'random password generator', and pick the one you like. Many allow you to set a length (i.e. 12 characters).
@TechTalkAmerica
2 жыл бұрын
Good point in regards to your first item. In regards to the second, I'm not convinced you need a computer to be able to just hit a bunch of random letters, numbers and symbols. Just "go Beethoven" on your keyboard. You might even get out some aggression...
@reefer-joe
2 жыл бұрын
@@TechTalkAmerica True if you only have a couple of passwords to create, but if you need several of them using a generator tool is faster, just 4 clicks, 1) select the generate icon, 2) select the copy icon 3) select the spreadsheet cell 4) paste the new password. You are also guaranteed that each one is unique, has the proper number of characters and mix of character types, and you don’t have to manually proofread the ones you typed manually saving you the tedious task of counting characters and checking the character mix by hand. But of course either manually or using a generator works.

@@reefer-joe The point ALL of you are missing (including David, shamefully) is that a good password manager like Bitwarden negates this tutorial completely, including issues involving both password creation AND storage.
@joedimauro3227
2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelscott356 Totally agree. I personally have used a password manager for years now and had my employer use the same one for all our corporate accounts. They are a great way to safeguard accounts for personal and corporate security. To paraphrase an old commercial.. "Password Manager, don't go on the internet without one."
Wish you had all of this in a text that can be copied... ? Would be quite helpful to absorb .. rather than going back and forth to and from the video.. I'm an iPad, I Phone user.
I do not recommend keeping your passwords in an unencrypted text format like a CSV. This may be good for importing into a password manager but I wouldn't do it into a browser and I wouldn't keep the file, as it is a huge security risk to have your passwords in plain text.
I keep getting the message "Safari could not import passwords from the CSV file because it is missing column labels, but it looks exactly like your example.

Same here. It won’t allow import. Even when safari is password empty.
Your Digital Will video is down.
Doesn’t work on an iPad though. That’s what I have.
much simpler method - let Firefox import from other browsers and then export one file to excel for editing or printing. CSV is simple text but Firefox is encrypted so it's safer and it's a much faster method.
u dont need to do alot of this...simply make a text file with all ur passwords and then use winrar (its free) to archive/rar/zip it and assign a single password to the rar'ed file u just created..cloud storage and email copies to yourself so u have access anywhere anytime... you're welcome :)

OK. This is good advice. But it is a lot of work. But when you add or change any password you must be sure that any changes are incorporated into each browser and your list. This is a pain and frequently will be forgotten.

You forgot to preface your intro with the disclaimer: This video is for only for people so technically inept that you've been letting your browser store your passwords rather using the best solution, a password manager, such as Bitwarden. You "dance around" the concept for a couple of seconds... then just plod on with "browser savers". Strange.
