How to Organize and Edit Your Garmin Echomap Waypoints with Homeport on your PC!

Today I am going to show you exactly how to organize and edit your Garmin Echomap waypoints using the Garmin Desktop software Homeport right from your PC computer. This technique will work with ANY Garmin Echomap that has a Micro SD Card slot in it and will work with the G1 Echomaps as well as CHIRP, Plus and UHD models. The only difference is with Plus or UHD, you can use touchscreen functions, and with the older units you will need to use your buttons.
I'll show you how I name my waypoints and use custom icons to easily identify seasonal spots, species as well as bottom types and marking special items such as hazards and laydowns that you want to mark as well as other tricks I like to mark. You can use these same tricks on ANY graph. This is also a great way to back up your waypoints should you ever way to transfer them to another Garmin unit that you can't network together, such as a CHIRP unit and a Plus unit, or if you want to share waypoints with friends or copy them to a brand new unit you purchased.
The Garmin Echomap graphs with 6" screens or greater have the required Micro SD Card slot needed to import/export user data.

That's a sweet unit for a Kayak! I'm actually going to a mystery private lake soon that apparently had trout in it and I will be fishing out a pedal boat lol! I borrowed a portable unit from my friend Mark so at least I con't be completely blind haha. Should make for a funny video!

    Your video has prompted me to organize my waypoints after many years of procrastination. The older King, Sitex, Lowrance and Garmin units made it complex to name waypoints on the water with the fish biting. I still have unnamed waypoints from the Loran days (TD1/TD2) not to mention many Lat/Lon numbers on my current units. The speed, ease of use and accuracy of the 2022 Garmin units is amazing to this seasoned fisherman.

    Great video as always. One additional option for powering up the units off the boat - Garmin offers a power cord that plugs into a 12v outlet (cigarette lighter style.). I grabbed that and a cheap 110 to 12v inverter. Works great with no extra cradle needed.

    Hi Osama, thank you very much for watching my videos and for the questions! Let me try to answer them: 1. I did one, you can check it out at kzread.info/dash/bejne/eHyMqqmropitirw.html 2. I can certainly do one on how to view your map within Homeport, however G3 maps are not supported by Homeport :( 3. I'm not great on this one because I rarely use tracks aside from using active tracks when drifting. I can however tell you the difference between a track and a route. A track is an actual recorded navigated path and a route is a sequence of waypoints drawn out for navigation. So let's pretend you want to drive your boat to a destination and you chart out 5 different waypoints where you will change direction to get to the final destination. That's a route. Once you get there, your sonar will show the exact path you took, that's a track. 4. I'm afraid I don't know what active-points are, can you explain a bit more? Thanks! Dan

    Thanks Joe, and welcome to the world of boat electronics, they are an amazing tool when you start using them to find structure an fish! I know we spoke about this on another video, but to answer you here, unfortunately I am not a Mac users. However I can confirm that you have to use Basecamp for modifying your waypoints instead of Homeport because Homeport does not work on Macs after the Catalina upgrade. Also note that G3 maps are not yet supported if you try to import them, but that doesn't stop you from editing and importing/exporting waypoints and editing them, it just means you can only use the default maps in the software. Thanks and good luck!

    Hey Dan, Thanks for the video. I’m a member of Freedom Boat Club and basically do the exact same thing. Since our boats are shared, I’ve found this to be the only way to stay organized. I usually save the waypoints/tracks before we start, replace with my map during fishing, then restore the file from when I started. A few questions / suggestions: Suggestion-tip: I have a second blank SD card, which you can format in the chart plotter, then download the map to (it needs to be separate from your user/waypoint SD card). Then, after I upload my GPX file to HomePort, I close homeport, swap SD cards, and restart Homeport. Homeport will then recognize the saved map from the second SD card making waypoint editing much easier. Questions/issues: 1) I’ve found the opposite- some of the waypoint icons I’ve chosen in Homeport seem to not be compatible with the garmin chart plotters on our boats. Just wondering if you have a list of which icons are compatible / incompatible 2) Waypoint name length: I’ve noticed that my waypoint names are truncated when using on a chart plotter- any feedback on maximum waypoint name length?

    Hi Nicholas, thanks so much for watching my videos and for the comments! I actually have a question about your process, why do you download the map copy each time when all you need are the tracks and waypoints? Homeport will just use a default plain map but you still see all your data. Why bother with the map each time? As for your questions, you definitely hit on a couple of soft spots when it comes to Garmin Echomaps! 1. MOST icons in Homeport should work on the Echomap but some are not supported. Unfortunately there is no way to import/export icons in to the Echomaps, which is a big fail in my opinion. I don't have a standard set, but with time I eventually figured out which ones I can use that the Echomap will display. I don't have a list, but maybe I can put one together in the future. The first time I edited waypoints, I think I used Basecamp and NOTHING I chose worked! 2. You are 100% right and it's ANNOYING!!! Before I had detailed waypoint names, uploaded to the unit and as you said, the Echomap shortens the name to the first 5 characters, ARG!!! Again, nothing you can do about this, it's a limitation. That is why I started using abbreviations like FSM001 would be fall smallmouth spot 001. Again, something I wish it didn't do. Thanks again and tight lines!

    @@DanRichardFishing Hi Dan- I don't download the map each time. I have a separate SD card with just the map on it (for some reason it never worked when I tried to download the map and my user data files). I transfer my saved tracks/files to my laptop from the "Data" SD card, then switch and launch HomePort with the "Map" SD card. I do this so I can use the full navigational map when editing/organizing waypoints. Typically, I'll create the waypoints after my trip using my recorded track. It helps to have features/depth contours, etc present when doing this. Also, I'll add waypoints/routes for marinas, docks, passages, etc. This would be very difficult to do without the navigational map. I did some searching and it seems like older Garmin devices: 1- change waypoint names to all-caps; 2- truncate after 10 characters (see support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=HGD9XaRzls9HmNiZcs15I6)

    Wow, They should give you a livescope for that professional lesson. It seems a lot of tech companies assume everyone is an engineer. Just a question about joining several different card from various times and GPX files. Can I import a bunch and merge them to combine as one to load back to the unit? Q>2 If I select "merge" rather than replace will it copy all the cards I put in as the onboard waypoints? Then I could export it and have them all if that works.

  • @DanRichardFishing

    @DanRichardFishing

    3 жыл бұрын

    Haha thanks Will, appreciate the kudos! :) So using Homeport, you can definitely import waypoints from different cards in to a single homeport profile and then export it to a single GPX import file. For the Merge function, yes it will import any waypoints from your cards in to the unit without deleting any of the currently stored ones. The only thing I am not 100% sure that I would have to try is what it does with duplicates. I vaguely remember having an issue with duplicates when I merged on an older unit. Thanks so much for watching and for your questions!

You would have to use Basecamp instead and it will work. Basecamp is like homeport, but more geared towards land based activities, but would still work the same way. Now bear in mind you don't have to import your maps to basecamp/homeport for this to work. You can still do everything in the video for organizing your waypoints and importing them, you just won't be able to do it while looking at your G3 maps, you'll be restricted to the basic global map in the desktop software.

    So, I'm centered in the North Country on Cranberry Lake, NY. The Garmin "g3 detail map" (v2020.0) does not show any (?) aids to navigation for Cranberry Lake. Now, I have a 1969 NY DNR nautical map with legacy navaids (danger bouys, red and green channel bouys, lighted bouys, and lighted channel bouys) in standard USCG symbology. While this info is no longer exact, it differs mainly that there are lighted channel bouys in place of some unlighted channel bouys. In my legacy GPSMAP device, I tediously entered locations and, in the absence of Garmin chart one symbols, selected dumbed-down symbols. Is there a way to gain standard USCG symbology icons preferably for HomePort to furnish user editted AtoN's?

  • @DanRichardFishing

    @DanRichardFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Bruce, that is a REALLY good question and one I have played with when I first started using Garmin gear. This is kind of a yes and no answer if I understood your question correctly. So part 1 is yes you can import custom icons in to Homeport or Basecamp, there is actually a guide on how to do it on Garmin at support.garmin.com/en-IE/?faq=VTS8XTdjCW5Tx3HyfJ3eQ6 but I don't know if you can just download a set of USCG standard icons. You would probably have to make each one. Now here's where the no part comes in, even once you have them in Homeport or Basecamp, the device will not import them so you will only see a default icon on the actual unit, which of course kind of makes them being available in Basecamp or Homeport somewhat useless imo. So for the unit itself, you can still only use the 50 or so icons built in to the system. Hope that answers your question! Thanks :)

    Thanks. Kinda suspected. The AtoN list on the devices and maps locks anybody out. User edits are permitted but not to be confused with registered data. Don’t quite understand why the AtoN on the boondocks like Cranberry Lake don’t make the grade, it I suspect the USCG doesn’t get to Cranberry Lake. Well, thanks again, and I hope to catch as many fish as you talk about! 🐟

    Do you ever have this issue; when you mark a waypoint while scanning and then try to navigate to it - only to NOT find it? Crazy! I read today that the waypoints puts you within 3 ft of it so if you mark a small brush pile, you won't find it using the waypoint.

  • @DanRichardFishing

    @DanRichardFishing

    2 жыл бұрын

    No definitely not! As soon as I drop a waypoint, I see it on the map as a red diamond shape by default. It is true that consumer GPS coordinates are off by a margin of up to a few feet and you also have to remember that it depends on wind and boat position. So for example when you scan a brushpile with your transducer on the back of the boat and waypoint it, the waypoint is based on the position of your Garmin unit, not the transduce, which is maybe 10 feet from your chartplotter. So in order to stop right on that brush pile, wind, current and direction of approach would have to be identical in order to have your unit parked on your waypoint and the end of your boat over the brush pile. This is why Livescope or Mega360 is so useful, you can use those tools to know exactly where the object is in reference to your boat. Hope that helps!
