How To Optimize HP Reverb G2 Resolution In SteamVR

How To Optimize HP Reverb G2 Resolution In SteamVR. After researching, tinkering and tweaking with the HP Reverb G2, here's my take on how to optimize resolution in Steam VR with my PC configuration ( i7-6700, EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC2, 32GB RAM,). In this video I show FPS/FT and CPU/GPU usage results testing various SteamVR Per Eye Resolution settings using XP11 as the base application. Results will vary depending on PC config and app/game. Always use caution when tinkering with VR and GPU settings. Comments and suggestions always welcome. #HPReverbG2 #SteamVR #Settings

    Quick note of thanks: I bought a Reverb G2 last week. After a lot of tweaking and videos and visits to Reddit etc I managed to get to the point where image quality was acceptable and the game sort of playable, but couldn't get over 45fps. After watching this video I was able to go back and revisit all the relevant settings in the right places. Now I'm playing at 90fps. Thanks.

    Nice video. The way Render Resolution in SteamVR works is as follows: what you put in General/Video section is your BASE render resolution, and the "Per application setting" is you MULTIPLIER (it is actually stated on the settings window). So in your video 70% per eye resolution and 120% multiplier for the game would net you 0,7 x 1,2 = 0,84 => 84% of the "full resolution". Also note it's a "total pixel" multiplier not resolution multiplier!. TL;DR I HIGHLY recommend leaving "Per Eye Resolution" fixed at 100% and adjusting ONLY the "Per application setting" and only look at RESOLUTION and not %, so as to make it WAY less confusing.

    Is there really a difference between total pixel multiplier and resolution multiplier? The only way that I can think is, say, setting the former to 2x would double both horizontally AND vertically, giving you 4x resolution (4K), whereas the latter gives you ACTUAL double resolution (1440p). Is this correct? Or maybe the other way around?

    Its per eye resolution so you need to work with the same data per eye resolution on the reverb is 2,160 by 2,160, its totally a conflict between how steam vr read the resolution set in WMR that cause that steam vr to enter the wrong resolution because if you go with an microsoft game that are not in steam the good resolution will be enter, in other word when you are putting higher than 50% in is situation you are putting supper sampling

    @@maddugqc6911 It isn't incorrect, for VR headsets the rendered images require transformation and cropping to fit the headsets lenses, it does differ by headset but most are around a 40% uplift over the display resolution, (1.4x). If you set the render resolution to 2160x2160 the image is transformed and cropped and you will not have a 2160x2160 image on the VR headsets display, it will be lower. This is why 100% res in steamvr for any headset is higher, to account for these and deliver the proper image.

    Guys it quite simple, VR renders a lot higher than flat screens. The G2 100% figure is correct. The issue comes with that this is brand new tech and we are using old cards. I have a 2080ti and I mainly play driving sims and using the Quest 2, the 2080ti is now struggling on a couple of my sims. So much so, that two of them I play on the rift S, because the 2080ti is taking a beating from the Quest 2. The G2 needs even more power than a Quest 2! The reason people say 50% is correct for G2, is because that’s all old cards can handle. If you want 100% then you need the brand new top end cards to run them. For sim racing I will need a 3080 / 90 Super to run a G2 for sim racing and have set and forget in place.

    most people ran their G1 at native res which is G2 at 50% and it was considered normal and looked great. This is still over kill imo.

  • @jamesleegte5753

    @jamesleegte5753

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Johnny_Thunder this is incorrect. All headsets run over their display resolution by around 50% as that’s what’s required to render a vr headset. Same for quest2, rift s and index. You can run all of these headsets at 100% via steam because our cards can handle it. My 2080ti can’t handle two sims at 100% for the quest 2, but for index and rift s it doesn’t batter an eye lid. This is because the cards have to power way more pixels in the display than a rift s or index. The reason people are saying small sweet spot, loads of rendering is because these cards can’t handle the G2 and have to run at 50% just to be playable. The G2 100% is correct, our cards simply can’t handle that amount of pixels. We will need 3080 / super and above to get 100% with set and forget. It’s a high end current gen headset, you can’t use old gen cards. Having it at 50% plus in game sacrifices is pointless. It’s like driving a Ferrari that has a Ford Focus engine.

    @@jamesleegte5753 You ignored that I was talking about the G1 Reverb which most people ran at 2160, native, and it looked great along with the sweet spot. Undersampling has nothing to do with sweet spot, it just increases pixelation, thats why the CV1 has a great sweet spot despite poor resolution. The G2 has a terrible sweet spot because of awful optics, the lens are crap, most G1 users agree with me.

    Great video man! But I got a little confused with other things I had read before, so let me see if I understand it correctly... Is it better to set the "global" resolution per eye in SteamVR lower (lets say, 70%) and than increase it on the application specific setting to, let's say, 120%, rather than the other way around? By "better" I mean more resolution and more fluid motion...

    @@BamTechVids I definitely will, this is really useful. The documentation that comes with the G2 is utter crap i.e. non existent...nothing on potential USB 'issues' (they've clearly not tested on AMD motherboards e.g. X570 - shocking). There's also nothing on setting up the required software, crucially, SteamVR. Within SteamVR there are a bunch of tweakable parameters and again, bugger all on what, exactly, they do. Your video here is fantastic in that respect - particularly how you detail the affects of change on crucial runtime parameters such as GPU usage, FPS and frametime. More of this would be great. How odd is it that both AMD and Nvidia have just released new cards promising significant and VR-needed performance uplift...but we can't buy them.

    You dont have to reset steam vr for settings to take place. You can actually adjust these settings inside of the VR headset, using your vr controllers and the effects are applied immediatly

  • @theVRpilot
    @theVRpilot3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for this, here are my thoughts as I was tweaking right along with you in VR with my Reverb G2 and the 3090 and replicating what you are doing. I think the Game specific resolutions are there so you can tweak games individually. I am not sure if the change in size you are experiencing might just be perception coming from the increased clarity you are getting. Quick tip - let me know if this works for you, I actually have two buttons set one for Enable VR and the other for Reset seat on my custom USB button box. When you CHANGE your resolution for XP11 you DO NOT have to restart xp11, NOR STEAM VR for the effect to take. I simply change the slider, reach down and flip my toggle switch which turns off XP11 VR and then FLIP it again and instantly throws me right back in. The resolution DOES change, you can visually see it and FPS VR will show you the SS updated specs FPS etc. Give that a shot! lmk how it works for you. I was able to test the scale of the cockpit by leaving my LEFT VR controller in face down next to my mouse, which put it by the B737 Zibo FMC computer. When restarting VR from 28% SS 50%, 70% 100% or 150% the controller was within 1 MM of the same button it was touching on the FMC. Also I did several test holding my hand out prior trying to reach an AP knob and obviously being less accurate since my arm can move, but my arm was in the exacty same position. I do not feel any change in scale. the level of CLARITY is through the roof when I go 70 100 or 150 SS with the G2. That is absolutely there. Try this maybe consider removing the AA as I found it gave me a boost in FPS and was able to run a higher SS with Higher FPS 100SS with almost 45FPS. AND I am at TNCM, default scenery in the B737. - Obviously these are specific to my RTX 3090, 9700k but I used to drop the AA before as running a higher SS almost has the same effect with less cost in performance. It isnt perfect but its pretty good if you prefer higher FPS. So yeah, im really curious about the scale thing. Also, my STEAM VR general resolution wants me to go automatically to 150%, that is where the white marker is for me in the menu. That is 3888x3796 resolution..... WTH!? running 2200x2200 is nice too, some jaggies show through, but higher res completely eliminates them for sure.. anyways thanks for the video figure id share my findings !

I find Bigscreen looks best at 100%, other games also perform fine at 100%, but some may be best for me to drop to the recommended 72% (or even 50% or 66%). Nice to hear your RTX3090 recommends a very healthy 150%. I wonder how RTX3060ti, RTX3070 and RTX3080 sit? I run a 3080 with i9 10900k at 5ghz, i can say that if i have the main slider at 100% its a problem only with Xp11. Other VR titles seem to be ok at 100% on the main slider. As of now what i've done instead (maybe not the best route?), is to keep the main slider at 100%, set the per video slider just for xp11 to 60% as an example. This way for other titles i dont have to go back in and change things. Not only that but i have to run 3jfps wizard at auto to be able to fly in hard hitting True Earth areas. My opinion that xp11 is the real issue here, its just not handling VR that well in terms of performance, but i could be wayy off on this thought.

    I have Reverb G1. gtx1080 on steamvr defaults to 102% to get it to the closest native resolution per eye. My new 3080 however THE SAME native resolution shows 150%. So it seems it's all about drivers and how steamvr read driver info and then tries to "guess" the number. For gaming I haven't played games just yet with 3080,but with gtx1080, setting higher than the 102 was just increasing the gpu load and 1080 is barely for vr gaming.. With 3080, I only tried video tests of high test samples of 8K Hevc encoded files.I tried lower and higher settings than the proposed 150% and while lower setting(eg, 100%, which was about 1600pix) resulted in less shapness, setting the resolution from 150% to 300% gave no visual clarity at all.

I need to, using the HP Reverb G2 with current brightness & no bluelight filter I get major eye strain & it litterly dialates my eyes for hours. I'm not gonna ware sunglasses in my Headset either that sounds very Uncomfortable Also I have a 3D printed Faceplate that fits my face better then stock so that isn't an option anyways.

    Actually the 100% resolution is the correct resolution. The panels are 2160 x 2160, but the actual VR resolution is 3160 x 3092. This is why VR is so taxing to the system it's resolution is around 50% higher than the panels. You are not running at 4k, it is actually 50% higher than 4k to be represented into the lens correctly, because the display is contorted to look correct through the lens. It is the same for all VR headsets. It would be like having two 4k monitors, running them at 50% high resolution, and trying to get 90 FPS all at the same time. 70% seems like the sweet spot for my 1080.

    I'm going to try this when I get home, after buying this for 600 bucks, waiting to get a replacement cable, spending like 50 bucks on a powered pcie USB port, and hours and hours of researching and troubleshooting it finally turns on, but steam VR crashes a lot if I open the menu, or just randomly, I was able to play Pavlov for like 20 minutes, and then I pressed the steamvr home button to switch to VR chat and that crashed it, 5 minutes later once all the software was back up I launched vrchat, loaded in, and my FPS dipped to incredibly choppy and then inevitably crashed, really upsetting how much time and money I spent on this thing, considering I could have spent all the time I spent researching and troubleshooting on working an extra shift or two at work to pay for the valve index, I would have just bought it if it had a higher resolution, the only thing keeping me from returning the headset is that little triangle animation when you launch steamvr, it really shows how high resolution it is and it looks fantastic, I just want to use it lmao. Also the fact that it uses four batteries really pisses me off lmao like I have rechargeables, but it's twice the work swapping them, I miss the first generation of headsets like the cv1 and the HTC Vive, you plug them in and they just worked, I'm really really really hoping that this works lol. Even if it doesn't, thank you for making a video trying to help us, if this works for me I'll come back and let people know my experience. I'm rambling because I'm on a 12-hour shift, and I had been troubleshooting this thing for roughly 12 hours before work, no sleep gang lol

    All of this comes down to what game you're playing and the hardware you have. My setup is something very similar to this and i'll likely be toying around with MS Flight Sim and I expect to have to dial down the settings to the point where I can' take full advantage of the headset until I upgrade my GPU. Though in other games that aren't so taxing i'm sure I can get the full res out of it. If you're a PC gamer you're generally used to tweaking settings to find the sweet spot for most games, if you're looking for an out of the box curated solution you might want an Occulus Quest 2 or even a PS VR 🤷‍♂️

    In Steam VR, EG: General TAB/Render Resolution is set at 100% . The Video tab / Render Resolution is a "multiplier" of the General Tab / Render Resolution so it would be 100% + 20% (is minimum in video tab). So that is using the (general TAB) Global setting of 100% plus (video TAB) your game 20% or 40, 60, 70 % etc. You are using 100% plus the multiplier that is why some people may struggling to run it. Cheers I set Automobilista 2 Racing sim at 48% All in game graphic settings on high and all PP effects on full , 3070TI with Intel i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz HP G2 @60hz Now steam VR is set , if I need more SS I use the in game Slider, Smooth and solid 60fps. NO Vertical sync. Gsync @ 3840 x 2160 Monitor setting and in game, Not sure those Monitor resolution have Effect on VR headset.

    I run a 3090 FTW. Alot of incorrect information in this thread. IN STEAM VR settings, at least on mine, the resolution scaling numbers for the G2, and their correponding "percentages" were WAY OFF. I had to lower mine to 48 percent, to get it as close to the Reverb G2's native resolution of 2160x2160 per eye. Native resoltion should equal 100 percent, but in steam it does niot, so by default, Steam is trying to upsample the pixels By a huge amount over native, which leads to the horrendous performance some Of you are encountering. Simply set it to as close to the native resolution As possible in the Steam VR resoltion scaling slider. And Then tweak it from there, with the ingame Settings. Many of you need to STOP thinking about this in terms Of "percents" (since in mine, the percents are not even remotely close to correct) and go by the lines of Resolution.

  • @shock_me

    @shock_me

    That's a common misconception. Steam's 100% is actually 100% native resolution due to the barrel distortion correction which gets applied when the image is adapted to the G2's optics. This has been officially confirmed by HP engineers. If you run at 48% you literally are running the headset at a touch under half res despite what the numbers may suggest.
