    I bought an old sailboat, I basically go over every system it had in three months… I had check the windlass, it moved up and down a few inches. I says “it is ok!”. I leave the marina the first day on the boat and I anchor in a bay that night … the anchor goes down. The next morning I hit the switch to bring the anchor up … the slack comes up then the windlass stops. (@&£#~~^€€) so I pull the anchor up by hand about 30 feet and tie the chain around a cleat. Later the next evening I release the chain and let it go to the bottom again. I checked the connection (it was old) so I redid that and that was it for that night. The next morning I decided to look at it again, I hit the button and it starts to bring the anchor up … then jams. I look under the windlass and the chain piling up and not dropping down to the rest of the chain. So I moved that little bit of chain and started the motor again, it picks up some chain and jams. It did pick up all the chain with my help but at least I didn’t have to pull the anchor up. Everything was good.

    I’m not putting my hands anywhere near the windlass when it’s operating. I’m also not going to operate it from the bow in rough seas.

    Excellent explanation. Was just curious, will the little brass nub and button reset automatically…..? And what is the tool for ( to crank manually possibly ?) Thank you so much.

    Thanks Christopher! No, it needs to be reset manually. The tool is to tighten up the gypsy and to reset the brass detente button. We appreciate the questions!

    Thanks for the video! How do you gauge how many feet of rope you are letting out to make sure that you are within the proper ratio?

  • @LongshoreBoatsCharleston

    @LongshoreBoatsCharleston

    Lots of people mark their rope with permanent marker or spray paint in ten foot increments, which will get you close!

    Very informative, as I’m the new owner of a 2006 pre-owned boat with a windlass. One question. You refer to the thing that secures the anchor in the up position as a “painter”(?)? Currently my boat has a black rubber tie down which is ugly and hard to attach/detach. I’d like to replace it with something cleaner and easier to secure like the system shown in this video. My Google search returns nothing close when I search “windlass anchor painter”. Am I hearing or spelling it wrong?

    The windlass "painter" is a Lewmar Anchor Safety Strap. The part number is #SS180001. We carry them in stock at our store! Hope this helps!

    Whats the lumar ? tool for and whats the purpose of the water valve inside the hatch over the anchor line ?

    Lewmar is the make of the Anchor Windlass. The freshwater spigot is to connect a hose in order to rinse the anchor, chain & line as it comes in as needed.
