The valves on the propane tanks have changed. You can open them without propane coming out if the valve is not faulty. To properly drain them you must hook up a section of the bbq hose to push on a valve inside to allow propane to flow and then leave it in a safe and well ventilated area to drain. Then you can remove the valve carefully (without your face or body over it) and slowly in case there is any pressure inside. Filling with water at the end is the best way to be 100 percent sure it is empty of any propane fumes.

@@jeffhayes2288 Yes it will. Just to be sure leave it upside down in cooler weather because the gas is heavier than air. That is not saying that the garbage man will take it. But if you are cutting it for any reason it is still better to fill it with water just in case. If you are making a portable air tank then go to it.

Just about blew a foo foo valve getting the top out of my 9kg bottle I made in to a forge. I ended up ratchet strapping the bottle to a tree and using a set of 36" stillsons as I couldn't get a grip on the valve with anything else. Never occurred to me to use an adjustable wrench on the lip of the valve! Will definitely give your method a try next time.

I've taken a look at some better methods and yes, remove the metal carrying handles with an angle grinder (after emptying the can). Then strap it down and actually a plumber's 2 inch wrench has worked better in my recent openings.

When they are recycled the recycling place will vent them slowly until empty. Of course this happens in the middle of nowhere and no smoking or sparks can be anywhere near. I did one and would vent for an hour then stop and when it was windy, then turn upside down because L.P. is heavier than air. Just be careful!

Sandals, short pants, I assume no safety glasses. Steel bar used to brace the steel tank when breaking valve loose. Steel wrench used to unscrew valve. A spark for whatever reason between the wrench and the valve and it's bad news. Standing over the tank when you were manually unscrewing the valve = wow. Any pressure in the tank at all and you're digging the valve out of your face. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I just worked for a propane distributor for 15 years.

Always be careful when working with anything with gas. If you're not comfortable working with it, you shouldn't attempt this procedure. For this tank, I left the tank open for more than a week out in the woods away from everything, and then filled it with water through the valve. I didn't show this process, but there are plenty of ways to perform this safely. I wanted to show that anyone can do this with little to no tools. Everything I used could be found or bought at a dollar store or for less than $10 at a flee market. I'd recommend getting a belt clamp and pipe wrench and gas sniffer if you're going to do large quantities of gas tanks.

Doing this alone is fine but having someone holding the camera next to you is not right. You keep throwing heavy metal tools down to the ground as if you do not understand that they can strike rocks and make sparks. But even worse than that, you throw tool down toward a pile of other metal tools that are already on the ground. If you apply for a job at the gas companies, do not mention this video. It only takes one spark. I just opened and cut my first propane tank and did a much better job than you did. However I have no plan to post a video about it. My video will start at the point where you add water to the tank.
