locksmith here, if you look at the latch or tongue of that knob set fitted to the block of timber, on the latches flat side there is a small semi cylindrical pin. Even the cheapest locks have this feature these days, it is a deadlocking mechanism. If fitted correctly, it will stay pushed in by the door jam while the rest of the latch slips into the hole in the frame. It must be fitted correctly for this to be the case for as of it slips into the hole in the door frame with the rest of the tongue from incorrect fittment this ‘shimming’ trick will work. If the lock is fitted correctly you won’t open the door this way as the latch will become deadlocked on closing meaning no external force outside of the lock will move the latch/tongue in. It will be locked into the door frame. If you can open an external door with this method, get a locksmith out to fix it. If adjusted to a correct fitment, no one can gain entry to your home or property this easily. Cheers

When the the bolt is properly engaged on the strike plate, the anti-jimmy (the small thing on the back of the bolt) prevents the latch from being depressed on modern locks made since the 90's. If the lock is improperly installed then both the bolt and the Jimmy go into the strike plate or the Jimmy sits to far away to properly engage. Try it yourself by pressing in the Jimmy while the door is open then try and press the bolt.

Most locking latches are like the one in the mockup door section, specifically engineered to defeat this trick..... They have that little half cylinder beside the latch. When the door is closed, the striker plate holds the little half-cylinder back, and the lock mechanism will not allow the latch to slide back as it did to allow the door to close. At the end of the video, he is trying to show us how the plastic will push in the latch on the mockup, but it seems not to be going in. He likes to ignore that. This trick only works for cheap latches without the half-cylinder protection mechanism.

It popped open because the small auxiliary latch was too far into the strike, or there was no auxiliary latch at all. The small "auxiliary" latch on the knob's latchbolt is supposed to hit the striker, but not go into the striker's hole. If the small latch goes into the hole, then the latchbolt is vulnerable to what you just witnessed. If the auxiliary latch stays on the striker's face and depressed, it won't allow the latchbolt to be pushed in.

This trick is so old, as a locksmith, we used this trick way back in the 60's in the UK. As you can see, the key only locks the movement of the knob, not the action of the lock. If your house is fitted with this type of security, I guarantee that you don't own your house. Otherwise change your locks. Bye and large, Insurance companies will not insure your house with this kind of security. Especially, on outside doors. Secondly, the use of door knobs, is not a UK practice, a person using a door like that, would constantly be hurting their hands pulling the door closed, unless the Lock/Latch was at least 3 1/2 inches away from the lock side of the door, as you can see not possible with this door. As a result, door handles are considered to be a better choice rather than knobs. Thirdly, any would be intruder, would just simply break the glass in this door, to gain entry.

People freaking out ought to stop a minute and realize that they have potentially just been made aware of a dangerous security flaw they previously did not know existed - and that this man has provided a method to quickly fix. He didn't invent crap locks, he showed you something important you did not know. Be angry with the manufacturers who play on your assumptions and the fact you, apparently, are not as detail-oriented as you ought to be, and perhaps lean toward an unconstructive reactionary response to new problems - a mindset demonstrated to have been used by history's great tyrants to drape themselves in power. You are dragging us all down, with your with-hunting mindsets and support of globally significant security policies that go along with it. We are not your enemies, we're just living differently and you are being sold a pack of lies that we are out to get you, in the end only to further the greedy despotism of a comparatively few people who have demonstrated already their shocking, and ultimately homicidal methods (if that's what it takes, and believe me, ultimately that is what it takes) that include passively letting disease ravage those whom they've sworn to protect and the act of aggressive warmaking including the targeting of civilians. Please, choose democracy, choose life and consider that you may have been wrong about Trump, his idol Putin and most of all, yourself. And no, that didn't feel good or I'd do it all the time. It's awful and we're just as scared as you. America cannot become an authoritarian power, you know that much I'll venture.

These types of basically "minor secure" locks are mostly on inside /room to room doors and not intended to be held fat for self protection much. They are good for their purpose which is to establish a modicum of personal privacy in a dwelling...bathrooms etc .to keep people from just being able to walk in easily This tip is highly useful for parents of children who get themselves accidentally locked in a bathroom etc and cat get out.. .Remember to use quality secure deadbolts ( I personally prefer with inside and outside key access) on entry and garage access doors .An don't cheap out when it comes to entry doors to your home.. heavy quality constructed sold wooden doors with minimal window features may prevent or ward off a burglary of your home Thieves will seek easier pickings if they must work too hard or take too much risk at being seen .

He doesn't show the same style bolt as 4:15; he would NOT be able to make the bolt move because the single latchbolt here has an extra guardbolt, the small extra bar at the back of the latch bolt, which is held flush when the door is closed. This locks the latchbolt so it will not retract freely, the detail needed to shimmy it as he shows in the earlier part. Simple latches are normally only used for interior doors. Be sure to check yours, as many are ill-fitted so the guardbolt fails to work as designed, so the latch may be pushed in when closed.

You can prevent this method of shimming a door from working by PROPERLY installing the strike plate on the doorjamb. Install the strike plate so when the door is shut tight, the dead lock plunger (the small tubular thing on the flat part of the plunger) is not allowed to fall into the plunger hole of the strike plate, with the plunger. The deadlock plunger remains pushed into the door (held by the strike plate when the door is shut) preventing the plunger from being able to be "shimmed". It is an easy adjustment to make and most builders don't even understand how to "properly" adjust a door strike plate. You can see how this works by just pushing the deadlock plunger (by itself) into the door and hold it there. Now try to push the plunger back into the door. It won't move. Let go of the deadlock plunger... now you can push the plunger in.

Ok I’m just going to add that if you thoroughly watch his video, that is to say watch it to its completion, you will discover as I did that he in fact is making the video as a sort of PSA. He warns the public to not use these simple door 🚪 locking mechanisms & in turn recommends the additional use of a bolt-lock. So yeah initially (this was while I was still watching the video) I was in total agreement & afterwards I felt a whole other way.

how does it work when the latch's curved side is on the wrong side? a lot of our locks have the flat side of the latch where you'd slide a shim....

  • @luisderivas6005

This won't work with most locks these days as they have anti-shim mechanisms that prevent the latchbolt from depressing once the door is closed.

VERY interesting!!! The plastic is a perfect combination of stiff and flexible to get past the round part of the latch and still be strong enough to push the latch back. Of course, burgurglars will know this trick so it also emphasizes why you should use the deadbolt!!!

  • @michaelws6247
    @michaelws62476 жыл бұрын

If your door is adjusted correctly this won’t work. Pertaining to the end with the deadbolt. the bottom lock, that you slide the plastic on, to open it. That actually has a small pin along side it, that’s the safety. When the door is adjusted correctly the pin is pushed in like an 1/8” when it’s closed. This prevents the credit card trick or bottle trick from working. If you push it in the 1/8” and try to push the lock in it won’t move.

@Markus Oja Actually nothing. But what's the difference between Canada and the USA? The difference is Canada is actually a country full of peace where people from different religions, races and cultural backgrounds get along in peace and harmony. The USA is just a major franchise that will soon go out of business and into bankruptcy if the owner (Donald Trump) continues to run the business😇😇😇😇

@Markus Oja Here's the difference. In a robbery, a victim must be present and robbed of something valuable by way of intimidation, force, or threat. Burglaries, however, are often done without the victim present, like a home break-in during the day when nobody is home.

I learned (no videos back then) on my own back in the 50's and 60's when my toddlers first learned to lock a door (bathroom or bedroom). Just had to be of sound mind to get it opened one way or another in the least of time. Couldn't wait - for toddlers don't understand that running water that starts out as cold can become very hot in a short time. Some timex common sense can be the answer if you're in the habit of figuring things out for yourself...

The lock that you are showing with the deadbolt lock above will not open the way you showed. When the door is closed that pin in the latch gets depressed and turns the latch into a dead latch which cannot be pushed in. In the old days the door knob lock didn't have the lock latch feature, but all locking doorknobs have it which cannot be opened the way you show.
