How to Open a Fire Hydrant

FIRE HYDRANTS ARE ONLY TO BE OPENED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT UNLESS OTHERWISE AUTHORIZED
~I'm not responsible for your actions...
Here's a quick video I took while I was out with the fire department one day. During a fire emergency, firefighters hook their hoses to these to access large amounts of water fast. You should always feel safer if you live near one of these.

Man...I told people to have a look on KZread to see how...you give a couple of turns then wait for the water to comes out, after you open as you want. Cause that way you release the pressure and it don't hammer your water line. Water leaks happen that way...

That’s cool that there’s that much pressure in that hydrant.

You should always use a gate valve while operating a hydrant and you should definitely open and close them much slower to prevent a water hammer from happening kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKOdm7WJZ63Qlqg.htmlsi=L38lwXnYRHIY6cIQ

Carl Turcot , he’s a fireman so he doesn’t care; even if it blows a line and he can’t get any water after that. 😕

Ooh explain in more detail we do this on a construction site at work all the time exactly the same way he did it. Except for the water is going to come out we'll have that capped up with a hose🤷🏽‍♂️...... The only problem we had was idiots with forklifts running over the water line and damnere taking people's heads off with the broken hose

The pressure is unbelievable! We had a guy get killed by a fire hydrant! A car crashed into one and it shot off and hit some poor soul right in the head! Let's just say it was a closed casket funeral.

Though there some dry barrel hydrants in the town I volunteer in (not mentioning which one), most of the hydrants are dry hydrants connected to static water sources. There are also a few gravity fed hydrants, those look like the dry barrel hydrants we use, but are painted violet/purple. I notice you placing you hand over the discharge at the end of the vid, I'm assuming your checking to see if the hydrant is drained.

  • @SERSafety

Yes, you are correct. This is a dry barrel hydrant which explains why I was checking to see if it drained.

Yes, we call it a hydrant wrench. It's a little bit bigger then your average wrench found in a work shop in order to prevent tampering.

Not right you never stand in front of the hydrant always in the back away from the threaded Because they could blow off volume and they will hurt if they hit you And I've seen it happen........🚒
