How to Open a Coconut & Remove the Meat (No Hammer/Screwdriver Needed)

Opening a coconut seems daunting enough, and once you do, the flesh of the coconut almost appears to be superglued to the shell! Well this video has you covered in both areas and more. Check out my technique on how to extract the water from a coconut, open it up and perfectly remove the flesh, without any hammers or screwdrivers!

You can skip the oven technique and use a spoon or butter knife to pop the flesh out. You can also steam the halves to help the flesh release from the coconut. Thank you to all my recent subscribers, let's continue to build this family and support each other. For the books, knives, and kitchen gear I use and recommend, check out the description!

Good idea! Alternate is to ziplock store the coconut halves with the shells in the freezer overnight. Next morning as it thaws the meat will seperate from the shell and also the dark coat automatically. You won't have to peel it and lose so much meat-oil-nutrition. Also try roll the coconut over flame to burn-remove the remnant coir fibres and wash it before cracking, helps minimise the mess/fibres getting in the coconut water as you drain into the glass. One more tip, there will always be 3 ridges on the coconut shell, find the widest section between the three and hit it hard with a rolling pin/heavy knife/sickle. It will crack open at once, with just one hit (expertise). Although we rely on traditional grating tool to grate it fresh holding the shell itself, that way the dark coat doesn't get in the food too much. Namaste from Mangalore, Southern India🙏

I grew up in Miami with a coconut tree in our front yard, one whose trunk was curved in such a way as to make it easy to climb. We didn't have knives, so we used the curb by the road and used basically the same technique. We ate lots of fresh coconut. Good video!

You are right to locate the hole that is softer than the other two, and enlarge it to pour out the water. However, here's a tip that will make the coconut water flow freely every time. Pierce one of the "other two" holes (doesn't have to be very large). Now, proceed with putting the corkscrew on the larger hole. When you pour the water, you will see that the water flows very freely from the large hole because air enters the smaller hole, preventing a vacuum from forming inside the coconut. Happy coconutting! 😁 😁 😁

If you put coconut milk in your eyes, it removes cataracts and an eye beautifier. Sometimes with one application. It's also an eye beautifier. I got the recipe from "Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables, and Herbs" by John Heinerman. For real. It got rid of my mother's cataracts and the cataracts from two of my neighbors. WARNING: You cannot do this if you are allergic to nuts Strain a little bit of the coconut - put it directly into eyes Warm the rest of the coconut milk, you don't need to strain this portion. Do not make it hot because you're making a compress to go over the eyes. After warming the rest of the unstrained coconut milk, soak it in a rag, lay down, and put the soaked rag over your eyes and lay down on your back for 15 minutes. Then you're done. The impurities in your eyes will be pulled out, so your eyes will need an hour to heal before watching TV or Reading. I watched a similar video once by America’s Test Kitchen where they were like “open coconuts instantly! Just freeze them overnight, then crack them open with a saw! Take the frozen coconut water and throw it out! Now the meat pops… right out.. of the shell… oh, it didn’t come out in one piece. Oh well, that’s okay! Now you still have to peel your frozen coconut. Now it’s ready to use!” And I’m over here thinking, wait, am I using frozen coconut or waiting for it to thaw while it weeps everywhere? And by instantly, I guess you meant overnight and then twenty minutes, because this gal is STRUGGLING. I, uh… I found this video a lot more useful. It’s a good technique, I’ll probably end up using it. Thanks!

Do you know if freezing or baking will cause the coconut to lose valuable nutrients? Thanks for the video! Very informative 😊

@@hcnevils Sure. Just seems like the effort would be better spent asking the same question on a platform built to give you an answer. There's a massive wealth of knowledge out there whether you want to use google, wikipedia, or a more dedicated collection of scientific journals. KZread won't guarantee an answer, and when you get one, you never know if its even real. Thats why I specified where I found the info so you could check yourself

@@CapnNapalm I know how to search the internet. Not sure if you actually thought that anyone wouldn't know how. I asked the question for myself and others that may have been wondering while watching the video. Eventually I did my own research and found the answer. I know it seems I'm being rude but in person you don't typically say "literally just google it" to someone asking another person a question. That's rude.

You’re 100% right. I came off as a total jerk there. I was worried about the open ended question leading to more misinformation about food and nutrition, which was why I responded the way I did. but if I was trying to help, acting like that was not the way to do it. Sorry. If you would like me to change my original answer to not be so combative, please let me know

@@CapnNapalm Wow. That was really an honest and kind response. Thank you. No need to change it....I think this conversation is good example of proper social media dialogue. Speaking of nutrition and misinformation, what are your thoughts on an animal based diet/Carnivore?

Haha yeah I guess they are. I kind of meant screwdrivers and hammers which is what people think you need to open coconuts.

technically "tool" refers to hammers, drills, saws. It's actual definition is "implement used by craftsman or laborer; weapon". Tool as used today is slang, not taught in the study of standard English (so far). But I admit, I thought I was about to see someone use his hands. Nice video.

@@TheOneanjel thanks! Yeah I thought most people would relate tool with a hammer or screwdriver, not actual kitchen equipment, guess I was wrong. As long as they don't think I'm going to smash it to smithereens against the table haha

To find the hole to open, we looked at it like a face, two holes were slanted and narrow, like monkey eyes, we always looked for the round mouth shaped hole.
