He could have meant the beauty inside her. They were little kids when they first met, and as the years flew, they were slowly, but surely maturing in every way (physically, mentally, emotionally). They learned by time how to appreciate the other party's differences and flaws instead of thinking they are a pain in the ass.

Some people wonder why odette suddenly “loved” Derek, but this is how I saw this whole situation. I’m assuming it was because she knew from the get-go that they were supposed to marry eachother due to her dad’s insistence. She was really the only one who TRIED. Being told marrying the guy was for the best of the kingdom is gonna mess with you, and it’s not like she was introduced to any other guys due to her dad wanting her to marry Derek so much that he wouldn’t want to introduce her to much competition (especially if the guy was actually kind and respectful to her, while Derek was a little shit). Basically, she forced herself to love him until it stuck, especially after her dad died so she really had no one else; unlike Derek who had a best friend and staff who interacted with him throughout his life.

What I don’t understand is how Odette fell for Derek? It’s it for his looks too? She didn’t like his all childhood and now suddenly she does? It’s just as Shallow Plus I hate how Derek never found other things to love about her, Odette is actually smart and cunning as he’s seen through childhood, I wish there was a moment he actually mentioned some of those. I adore this movie and still will Idc but even as a kid I was like “But what changed?”

Errr...he's good at archery? Also, there's some moments in the montage of them growing up that could imply that they were into each other for a long time, but in denial...I dunno, everyone eventually has a crush on someone that wasn't worth the time or energy when they were a kid, right? Maybe Derek is just Odette's stupid crush and then the circumstances of the movie just made it too awkward for her to walk away from him after the curse breaking.

Note how teen Odette in the purple dress looks pretty much identical to adult Odette in white and green, but Derek has a mild crush at most on her in purple, showing some jealousy. Meanwhile by that time Odette's completely given up on him and would rather hang out and flirt with the guards.

Firstly, Odette did the same thing. What made her fall for Derek? I don’t recall her saying one good trait about him either. Secondly, they were CHILDREN who didn’t actually spend all that much time together. It certainly wasn’t time spent getting to know one another on a personal level. If Derek’s shallow and a jerk, Odette’s shallow and a hypocrite.
