HOW TO NOT ATTACH YOURSELF TO THINGS - this makes minimalism so much easier

We are far too attached to things external from us. Especially things we buy, acquire and collect. We have this notion that when we buy things and add to our collection, we are adding to our worth. But our worth is unchanging. No matter what we have or don't have, we our worth is the same. No one can add or take from our worth as a person. Realizing this and other mindset shifts, we can detach ourselves form things. And with this easily lead a minimalist and intentional life. It is not easy and it will take work and time to shift our mindset, but it is possible to strive for non- attachment to things.

Great points! Buying more things doesn't add value to ourselves. I think a lot of people buy clothes, bags, cars in order to show them off to others. Once we realize that our souls, minds and characters represent our value, we can detach from all the rest.

This was very interesting! I'm decluttering under my bed and was going through some old embroidery projects that I was going to throw out. Instead, I sewed them all onto a denim backpack I purchased a few months ago. Now I have less clutter, but a fun bag that was already being used for something!

Love the video ❤ the more you think about it, the more absurd the concept of ownership seems. Of course we need to have some material things in order to live healthy and happy lives and a society wouldn’t work without protecting ownership to some degree. But the society we live in doesn’t only see possessions as tools that are necessary to serve a certain function. Ownership is seen as an end in it self, something that defines us and our self worth as a person. This video is a wonderful reminder that our possessions don’t define us. Or as Chuck Palahniuk put it: „You are not your job, you're not how much money you have in the bank. You are not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You are not your f*cking khakis.“

Your video came to my thread right in time. I’m about to move from my (😉) home since 20 years. I have so much (in my eyes) garbage in the the garage and i feel it like it is the ”proof” of how miserable I am. I’m the one left in the house when my former husband left me and all the trash is what left of our marriage. The house feels like it is me, so the prise I was offered felt like the price was on me. I’m really in a bad shape 😅 but it can’t get worse. So, thank you for helping me detach myself from the belongings and hopefully get rid of it. Really, great video!

I haven't made as many videos on digital minimalism. It is an area that is often overlooked but just as importat. I have made these two in the past that focus more on using digital devices (like your phone) less: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nmaJko9rk7rXlM4.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2uVk6d9kbiyqqw.html

this is such an utterly insane point of view?? i have never once bought something for my "worth", i buy things because i like them. i dont connect my sense of self to objects. i have never been impressed by a rich person for owning objects, i have never looked down upon someone for not owning objects. ive also never said i personally "deserve" a physical object just for the sake of having it. thats insane. this isnt just an issue of getting too attached to things, this is an fundamental problem with your overall mindset in life. your experiences are not universal. i genuinely cant fathom how you must have grown up to not only have such a strange worldview, but to assume this is a normal worldview that everybody has

I understand that this thought might not feel relatable. It took me a while to see this too. But what I am talking about is an unconscious, underlying attitude we have toward buying things. It's not like we walk around, consciously thinking: "Let me buy this to up my worth as a person". Only after some self-reflection can we see this underlying thought. Most of us are driven by ego and vanity in our everyday actions. Why else would we go out of our way to buy designer items? Rationally, they aren't better than any other item. If it's about looking good, why do we want to look good? It is to some degree to appeal to others, to be more favorable in their eyes. We all do this. There are many social experiments that show that our society values homeless people less. We might not rationally say that they are worth less as a person, but we often show it in our underlying attitude toward them. If this weren't true, our society would treat homeless people with much more respect. It is realizing that we do this that we can take the next step to change something about it.

@@CatchyCravings first of all, to get this part out of the way; while a majority of people may have a bias against unhoused people, this isnt an inherent fact of life that applies to everyone, its a product of the society we live in. some people never picked up on this attitude during childhood, and integrated it into their overall worldview. it isnt an issue that every single person has to work on, some never had the problem, or have already worked on it. also kind of insensitive to bring up an issue that leads to actual real life human beings dying every day in this video about clothes and objects. this isnt a neutral or casual subject, it should be handled with more tact. moving on. i have never bought a designer item at all. i dont have any underlying attitudes that make me want to buy designer items at all, i literally do not buy them and have never wanted to. i only own 6 articles of clothing (including 2 pairs of shoes) that are over $60. i try not to judge people who buy designer too harshly (simply trying to be nice to people who dont literally hurt others), theres always the possibility they may like the appearance of the object itself; but i find a lot of these things ugly, and i sometimes look down on people who buy things for status rather than practicality. i dont like how a white shirt that says "supreme" in red looks, so i buy different shirts. i dont like how a brown bag with "gucci" plastered all over it looks, so i buy different bags. i dont like how iphones break often, are hard to repair, and simply how they function, so i dont buy iphones. i do not do these things. i dont know how to get it across to you that i literally do not do the same things that you do. i do not think the same way you do. i also have unusual tastes that most other people dont like, its for me. while there are of course other underlying feelings fueling my personal taste, not everyone has the exact same factors that lead to them buying certain items. you assume i must have the same underlying feelings you do, and just havent examined myself enough to realize that. which is a really wild leap to take, it is a lot more statistically likely that i was just born different, had parents that said and taught me different things, grew up in a different physical environment, went to a different school, and have different friends currently. what im mainly trying to say is, dont assume everybody on the entire planet thinks the same way as you. "WE" dont. you have a very narrow minded view of the world, and are somewhat self centered. i would have just closed the video and moved on if you said things like "*I* often subconsciously buy items to improve *MY* worth, if there are other people who also have this issue, these tips might help" instead of implying all ~8 billion people on the planet earth can relate to you, personally. note the amount of times i use the word "we" in my comment vs the amount of times you use the same word do in yours. im a different person from you, with different problems. im a stranger on the internet, you dont know what goes on in my mind. your experiences are not universal
