How do you night dive safely? Night diving is not too different than Scuba Diving during the day, however there are a few skills and considerations you'll need to do it safely. There is a night diver certification, and this doesn't replace that, however the video does cover a variety of tips such as the proper use of dive torches, a recommendation for the best dive torch, things to look for in a dive torch, tank marker lights, lost buddy procedures, hand signals at night for scuba divers, staying warm during a night dive, staying warm during a surface interval, and more.
This video is NOT sponsored, though Orcatorch did send me the D710 for free and asked if I would like to make a review. After testing it, I decided to recommend it in this video, but all thoughts and opinions are my own and I have not been paid for this video. "Light discipline," YES! Both being spatially aware of yourself and your light, and establishing communication with lights. I've been with many and experienced diver that forgets these things, LOL! I also loved the tip about using the edge of your light to highlight interesting fish. Tarpon can be such party poopers.

    Oh I’ve had a few tarpon encounters that may have influenced some of my word choice 🤣🤣🤣 The amount of times I’ve been blinded underwater…..light discipline is one of the biggest things I stress with new night divers 😂

    Charge your gauges with your lights before you dive into the water. Set your lights to low output when you're diving into clear water. In murky water, use a light with a narrow beam and preferably no corona. This will help pierce through the particulates and reduce backscatter.

    Besides night-dives I like night-snorkeling with my snorkeling certified children in the Red-Sea (Dahab to be exactly). With two flashlights and a camera we see a lot of sea-life, like Lion-fishes, octopuses, calamaris, bluespotted stingray's, thousands of small fishes and even morenes. They and me like it a lot. Before I made a lot of night-dives, sometimes it looked like hoovering above the moonsurface. On my youtube channel I posted two video's of nightdives, One with a spanish dancer (red snale) and one of to morenes hugging each other

    When it comes to flash light positions do you prefer hand mounted, hand held or mask mounted?

  • @CircleHScuba

    Personally not a fan of mask mounted. Handheld or hand mounted like a Goodman handle are my preferred. Handheld for recreational is fine for me. Tec diving depending on the situation I’ll want a goodman handle.

    I know it’s against standards, but I don’t dive with tank markers. My buddies light is much more obvious than that tiny LED. I really don’t think they’re necessary if you’re carrying redundant gear

    I think it’s just nice to have the light behind them as well and it can be a low power surface marker as well. I hear you, but with how cheap they are I think it’s worth securing personally. No downside to it if it’s no to low maintenance, water activated, etc 🤷‍♂️

  • @ChrisD624
    @ChrisD6245 ай бұрын

    Have you ever tried the tank marker light in the daytime in low vis? We had about 8ft visibility this past weekend in Monterey and could barely see my buddies. Wondering if this would be effective or not bright enough.

    So I actually leave mine on my regulator through the yoke valve or on my cam band on my setup with my DIN reg, and it has 500+ hours, so it’s just there 😅 I haven’t specifically asked or looked to see how bright it may be in our lake conditions that can be down to 5ft of viz, I’ll try checking into that though!

  • @ChrisD624

    @ChrisD624

    @@CircleHScubaThanks, I’d appreciate if you could let me know next time you ask a buddy. 500+ hours is crazy and I like the idea of just leaving it on all the time if it works. Another question I have is regarding lumens. For a primary light, what’s the minimum you’d recommend for rec and night diving? I’d like a small light but understand it’s a trade off with brightness.

  • @CircleHScuba

    @CircleHScuba

    5 ай бұрын

    @ChrisD624 I think it’s a bit of a preference thing but I’ve seen people say 400-700 is fine and being able to jump up to maybe 1k or more for specific situations is a nice to have. For reference, my current video lights are 2000 lumens each in a soft wide angle beam, and so just fine. I mean more light is always better for footage, but they do perfectly fine. I think if I HAD to put a number, 700-1000 is probably all I’d use on a normal dive and maybe some parts I’d crank it up some depending on what I needed. Your eyes adjust underwater at night like they do during the day too, so it depends on ambient light from the moon and such as well

  • @CircleHScuba

    @CircleHScuba

    @ChrisD624 oh and yes I’ll definitely ask!

  • @bloodymarvelous4790

    @bloodymarvelous4790

    @@ChrisD624 There's no single correct answer to the lumen question. It greatly depends on how the light distributes the lumen. A narrow beam 500 lumen is brighter than a 1000 lumen floodlight. Lumen describes the total amount of light it outputs. Candella is the measure of brightness.

    too much sponsorship

    Thanks for this, it’s honestly good feedback. The video is more on night diving and you do need a torch, so talking about features of a torch and their torch happens to have those features felt pretty natural to me. I think there’s about 60 seconds total of orcatorch talk on the 11 minute video, but perhaps even that was too much. Do you have any suggestions on how I could’ve presented a needed tool (dive torch) that would’ve felt better? I mean, the “sponsor” aspect is they sent me the torch and I had the choice to do what I wanted, so again, just discussing good torch properties and why you need a primary and backup, felt natural and something I would’ve done regardless.

    @@CircleHScuba For me personally the balance seemed fine. Orca torches are good torches. Reliable and not too expensive. I personally went for Apeks torches as I liked their approach to creating dive lights. My primary torch has a display that spells out how long the battery will last at the current power setting, and my backup just has a traffic light LED. Both have a beam angle of about 8° for the hotspot, and 110° for the corona/floodlight. Both lights will easily last an entire night dive on a full charge and full power, and they can be set to half and quarter power to stretch that to 2x or 4x burn time. I've never done two night dives in a row, so I've never been in a position where I was caught short.
