    My husband always says if you don't ask it's an automatic no. Recently, I found a jacket I really wanted but it was full price and I hardly ever pay full price. So when I went to check out I asked the cashier if there were any discounts available and he said no but gave me 25% off anyway! I thought WOW this really works!

    We had a good experience when we purchased our latest home. The seller asked 2,2 million for it, but I saw there was very little interest for the property, so I bid 1,6 million with a time limit of two days. The seller came back with a few thousand more, and we got it for 1,67 million.

    I can attest to the house buying and getting a deal. 12 years ago my husband and I were about to get married and looking to buy a house. We wanted to be in a certain neighborhood that was still being built out so the house we wanted was being sold by the contractor. They did not want to negotiate so we walked away and put an offer in on a short sale in a different neighborhood. When they found out, they came back and dropped the price $25K. The bank didn’t take our offer on the short sale, and we turned around and bought our house from the contractor with our lower price.

    One of my friends from the senior center ALWAYS expects a "deal." When he needs a new fridge he shopped ALL the big box centers, printed off the sheet for the costs of the brand he wanted. . Then he went to the local family-owned store where he has shopped at and bought from for 20 some years. He showed them the price and asked them to match that. He spent about three hours doing this comparison. He got the $100.00 of at the store he really wanted to buy from.

    I have a similar story where my mom got a matching set of couches that only earned a penny of profit for the store. We started at that store and spent the day checking others too. She really liked a feature of that specific couch and returned a few hours later, unable to replicate her findings. Since it was the last set in the US and the matching chair was triple price and only 1 left 1500 miles away, she got a great deal so they could clear out the merchandise to make room for newer models.

    Always factor in delivery fees, haul away, installation and cost of warranty when shopping major appliances, when comparing retailer prices :) I find Costco is usually the best, if they have what you want. Stores like Lowe’s will often match the competition and offer an additional gift card in order to get your business :)

    If you are actually needing a new appliance: Dryer broken? Replace the heating element. $40 on Amazon we used to do it about once a year because my dryer was purchased super used and we had it FOREVER When that dryer finally died (drum broke) we went to a scratch and dent appliance store and scored an awesome dryer for about $150. Between the dryer breaking and getting the new one we just hung everything to dry outside for months. 😂

    1. Know what the item goes for AND how much you want to spend beforehand. NEVER disclose how much you actually have. 2. Know more about the item than the seller/sales person. 3. They NEED to sell the item more than you need to buy THAT specific item, so always be prepared to walk away.

    Negotiation is all about power. Generally, people with power exercise over people without power. I like Dave's take on not taking advantage of people who are vulnerable. An example of exercising power is buying a house from someone who is desperate. A dude loses his job and can't pay mortgage. The house is valued at $400,000 but because he is desperate he agrees to $350,000.

  • @NoelFallstrom

    @NoelFallstrom

    7 ай бұрын

    Negotiation is all about finding a deal that both parties are happy with. Not power. If it was all about power, there would always be a winner and a loser. Instead there should always be two winners in every transaction. However, you do make a good point. If you are a buyer that must buy this one item, you will end up paying a much higher price than a person who is on the fence. If I am a seller that must sell something today, I'll end up selling at a lower price than a seller who can wait. If I need to sell a $400k house today, I'd much rather have an offer for $325k than no offer at all because the buyer doesn't want to take advantage of my situation. I would advertise my situation and the deal I was offering to encourage more potential buyers.

    Something that works great for me believe it or not is to talk up the item and how much you’d really like to have it but I can only afford to pay this much. If you’re nice enough about it lot of people will give you a really good deal because they know that you really want it if you can believe thatdoesn’t work with everybody but works with a lot of stuff that people have an emotional attachment to and want to make sure that it goes to good hands

  • @LyonsArcade

    The nuance here is not to lie to them and tell them you don’t have any money. Just tell them you can only afford to spend a certain amount. That’s honest I’d love to have this car, but I can only spend 8000 on it. Ultimately you have to be willing to walk away in any negotiation it gives you 100% of the power.

    Years ago I had a car salesman reply to my question about the cost of the car by asking me how much I wanted my monthly payment to be. I repeated my question about the final cost. He asked how much I wanted my monthly payment to be. This went on two more times until I finally said, fine, I want my monthly payment to be $100. He was instantly upset and informed me he couldn’t sell the car with that small of a monthly payment. I suggested then that he shouldn’t ask me how much I wanted my monthly payment to be. This was years ago and we now pay cash and keep our vehicles for as long as possible.
