How to Nap and NOT Wake Up Groggy | 4 Tips

Do you ever wake up from naps either feeling worse than you did before the nap, or oversleeping and turning that 20 minute nap into a 3 hour snooze fest? I'll show you how to put a stop to it, and begin power napping like a pro.
The key to understanding how to nap more effectively is a familiarity with the sleep cycle (00:47). Effective power napping takes advantage of the lighter stages of sleep, specifically stages 1 and 2. Deeper sleep (meaning stages 3 and 4) is more restorative sleep that is best kept for overnight. Napping into deeper sleep stages is more likely to result in sleep inertia, feeling groggy, and even oversleeping.

QUESTION - if REM sleep only happens at the end of a full cycle, then why do I sometimes start dreaming in the first few minutes, as I’m falling asleep? Also,, why do I sometimes dream as I’m waking from a short nap, such as 45 minutes to 1 hour?

If you have the time, 90 minutes is a full cycle of 1 - REM and you will feel refreshed. 60 mins is the beginning stage of REM and you may feel a little groggy but should be fine for your memory. 30-50 mins is what you want to avoid.

Yes, its part of ayurveda / yoga science. Specially suggested to be done for approx. 15 min post a meal in the afternoon (post lunch basically), as then all the blood flow can be utilised in digestion, which results in a faster turn around time and reduced the grogginess. Lunch is also supposed to be the heaviest meal of the day, as the Sun is at the highest point, creating a direct impact on our digestion abilities (agni, the digestive fire). Can share more of this offline if interested.

I must ask, how can you time a nap at all without setting a timer? in my case just makes me hyper aware of how long I have left to fall asleep, leading to me either not falling asleep at all and moving on, or having to just not bother with the timer/alarm at all (which will quite often lead to me sleeping for too long and waking up either at a less than optimal time for wakefulness, or sleeping for far too long for practical reasons) Edit: basically i just don't get how someone can say "ok I'm gonna have a 15-20 minute nap now" and just fall asleep in time to have a more-or-less 15-20 minute nap. maybe naps just aren't my thing thought lmao

A tip for drowsy sleeper: Take a cold shower, it will put you into survival mode, any drowsiness will be wiped away. If no shower, just wash ur face with cold water, it has much less effect, but better than nothing.

I woke up after a 3 hour nap and felt so weird, I felt drowsy and my brain felt like it was night during day time, and one time I went to sleep at 4 pm and woke up at 8pm and my room was dark, I thought I went to sleep and woke up in the middle of the night until I remembered I just took a nap.

What are your thoughts on melatonin supplements? I’ve always has trouble to sleep and even more now (I’ve moved to a country with a different time zone and sunlight is “scarce”), so I was considering trying some supplements but I’m a bit skeptic about it...
