ROLLER GUNS!
A lot has been said about the pro’s and con's about converting your normal speargun to a roller gun.
And with debate raging in the back of my mind, I finally decided to get involved.
I found these videos and links, useful guides in converting my gun.

Extra notes: don’t use cheap rubber bands. The MVD rollers have got some rather sharp edges and they've been cutting into the bands. But so far the gun is working really good...

Hey Buddy, nice channel I, I have a lot of time for people that try new things and questions status quo. I too moved to rollers 8 years ago and over the years the learnings have been many. here are a few: 1- short overhang is way more accurate, dont take my word, just try it and you'll see for yourself. 2- use full pre-tension, and forget thos dynema extending cords at the bottom. if you do this you will experience less recoil and more power. Chris Coates spent the time to make a nice KZread video about this. correct rubber lenght for a full pretension system is 50% of barrel lenght + 5cm. thats it. 3- dont worry about the wishbone, they last forever even when they go fluffy. make sure your two stainless guides at the top are always smooth, I use a sponge sanding paper (500 grit) and smooth it periodically. 4- resist the temptation of using 16mm rubbers on anything under 1.2m long guns, unless you dive in very cold water. thank you for the video. nice job

@@Close_Call hey hey. anything under that barrel lenght can be driven with 14mm bands, making it possible to load without a load assist. Shorter guns fire lighter shafts too (unless you go over the 7.5mm mark), so 14mm is plenty. take a moment to watch the latest Rob Allen video in which he depicts how rollers deliver power compared to a standard gun. the stroke is smoother and longer on rollers, so you get full speed for longer distance. ironically the top speed is slightly less than in a standard gun.

did you screw the MVD roller using the existing screw hole? If you did, I think you might have damaged the o-ring.

Thanks for the nice video...i would like to convert a pathos open pro 90 to roller and i have a few questions...is your speargun 90cm?how long and thick are your rubbers?

I may suggest getting rid of the line release clip and if you are using it mono, since you now have a reel, any muzzle bungees and or clips are excessive and will damage your rubbers. Instead use spectra or dyneema as your shooting line and tie a double figure eight to quick release knot.

How much pretension did you use? My roller recommended 30cm but I can’t pull the bands at all at that stretch lol. So I went down to 20cm and I still can barely pull the bands. I’m using 16 mm rob Allen bands. I see some people use maximum pre tension and then some use barely any pretension. I’m a little confused lol

yes, getting that maximum stretch is kind of the point of a roller gun. you want some good pretension on those bands. Can be difficult to load but thats why its good to have a leaver build into your wishbone- as something to grab onto when you need to get hold of the bands. On my roller i have a bit of dynema line connecting the bands at the back - you can always adjust that line to maybe make it a bit longer, taking some tension of the bands, but not to much- you don't want them to flop around under water...

Staunch Industries I been using it at 20cm or no pre tension. Crazy bc no pretension still gives a lot of power and accuracy! And at 20cm... it’s insane. Been having so much fun with my roller. Thanks for making this video and thanks for always responding 🤙🏼

@@StaunchIndustries just converted my 95 to a roller, seeing your load assist I'm going to make one a similar size, mines a fiddley three finger special! I'm running salvimar S400 bands @16mm, they work well. I do know what you mean about rollergun efficiency/looks/inanimate art... I pick it up all the time to admire its aesthetics..think I love my rollergun..

@@StaunchIndustries I believe this depends on the rubber, amount of stretch it can take as well as the gun length, rubber thickness, shaft thickness etc... What I was wondering is why don't you run your rubber all the way down to the trigger, you waste a lot of potential energy here..

@@Rawly84 900 in length & yes I used 18mm band, but you can get away with 16's. I used 7mm- 7'5mm shafts, they pack a punch. Best advice I can give is to have a look at Chris Coats - Coatsman spearfishing vid channel he does a fantastic job at breaking down rollers & how to set them up for maximum performance.
