How to Move Your Horse’s Shoulders on the Ground | Ground Work Series 3/6 Exercise #2 FQ

This exercise is crucial! Oftentimes I find myself diving into how some programs spend so much time and emphasis on the hind quarters (which is super important, dont get me wrong- thats why its the first exercise in this series) that folks forget how important it is to be able to influence the shoulders. We've all probably seen or experienced a horse pushing a human out of the way with their shoulders. Heck horses do it with each other all the time in the field- when the other horse doesnt pick up on their initial request that is. So here we're going to give you the tools to communicate and reinforce your request for your horse to yield the shoulders. This is extremely handy when you're maneuvering around your horse in the barn aisle and in other day to day instances. Dont just walk around your horse and let them be the center of the world. When you need to get to the other side of them use it as an opportunity to see how refined your communication is with your horse by asking them to move in a manner where you can then get to the other side in the easiest way- by having them move. Alright folks- get busy and let us know in the comments if you have any questions!

I have been working on this and my horse keeps swiveling around to face me. She wants to face me all the time. If I get her to stand still when I’m at her side, then as soon as I start to move, she pivots around towards me. I’ve tried going at the middle of her neck, but she still does that. Not sure what to try next.

Thanks for the great vid. My colt started doing a good job, now he hates me trying to move his shoulders. He'll grind his teeth, tighten his lips, pierces his ears back flat, and starts walking in bigger circles. Any tips?

When I try, my horse refuses to go anywhere. He has a history of thinking he’s better than me, but even when I bump him he just stands and doesn’t care. Any tips?

Hey Kaela, couple of tips and insights. 1- When you bump him he just stands there. It is important to bring our energy up and to move like we have somewhere to be- a sense of urgency. This sense of urgency means we need to be prepared and therefore can help our horse start to get mentally tuned in so they can be prepared. Bringing my energy up starts inside of me and may manifest into me waving my hands, patting my jeans, anything with a higher energy that I think would be enough to get the horse to start preparing and then following through with moving their feet. 2- He has a history of thinking he's better than me. Straight forward and completely honest, that is not possible. That idea/thought process stems from a high level analytical thinking ability which comes from the Frontal Lobe of the brain. In humans ours is very developed (therefore we can premeditate things, have an ego, etc). In horses theirs is WAY LESS developed making it impossible for them to have these types of ideas. Oftentimes when we get frustrated and put blame on the horse its just where we've come to the end of our knowledge or understanding. Thats totally OK because it gives us the opportunity to keep learning. We've got an entire video library focused on horse and human development. The Foundation Groundwork is 14+ exercises and there is a 7 day free trial. www.videos.coltonwoodshorsemanship.com

Be sure you are prepared by having the lead rope properly adjusted in your hand so you can redirect the forward energy. I mention this in the video and show how to address it.
