Thanks Travis. A basic lesson that I also teach in our dojo. It's good to get it from a super high caliber judoka (I mean.... who listens to me, right? :-P )

This is brilliant. Back problem makes me hesitate to try any takedowns because of the resisting opponent after grips are established. This is, like you said, a 'free entry'. Will try this in class. Thank you Travis.

I have a request...For RvL, how do you like to deal with someone trying to grab your waist for a bear hug or a tight waist and then doing an ura-nage or tani-otoshi? For basics I like to circle my hips away while turning to face them, pulling sharply on the collar -- almost like a collar drag (but with same-side collar girp, not cross collar grip). I know that can be turned into hiza guruma or sasae-tsurikomi ashi. For counters, I like to use my elbow / forearm frame to keep them at distance, and when they really step in to grab the waist, I stop framing against them and instead grab over their back / shoulder as I rotate my hips hard to face them and hit them with ouchi-gari. If they do make it to my waist, then it's about setting that whizzer or belt grip and doing close-range judo, with sumi-gaeshi being a great option against BJJ guys who tend to stay bent over and defensive.

Do you have the same kind of footwork or movement drill for throwing he person backwards? thank you for the video.

Thanks for this, Travis. Is it realistic for shorter/smaller judoka to use an over-the-collar grip on taller/bigger opponents? If not, how should smaller judoka try to move bigger judoka into their throws?

They should practice from the end of the sleeve and move toward the sleeve hand in a backward angle forcing the bigger person to chase them down.

Looks like you end up making him step into a left side lead as you finish your footwork? Also, different question - I'm assuming in a Bjj environment you'd use cross collar grip and belt grip much more aggressively, is that about right? Are there other grips you'd use that might be less favorable in strict IJF rules? Maybe this includes pant leg grips etc when single legs etc are legal in Bjj? Also interested in your thoughts re: order students should learn attacks if they're mostly Bjj players - sasae / ouchi gari, o Soto gari, Sumi and tomoe nagae seem like a good set for a Bjj players for study for a bit, obviously this neglects having any turning throw but maybe that's fine for a start?

I kept him in a right handed stands I just brought his back leg (left leg) closer to me with the spinning movement. For the second question: NO I would not use this movement with a cross collar grip. I would however us a cross collar grip just with a different type of movement. I should make a video on order of takedowns BJJ Player should learn. It's a more complicated question be cause your size player a huge part in the type of takedowns you should be doing.
