How to Move a Horse's Hindquarters Under Saddle

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The hind end of the horse is his powerhouse - This is where the horse's balance and self carriage come from which are essential to a comfortable ride and performing any kind of athletic manuevers. When riding, we need to focus more on the hind end than on the head, neck, or shoulders. Teaching your horse to move his hind legs when you ask is a good place to start.
I have received several questions on this movement recently - how to ask for it, what the cue should be, and what it looks like. So in today's video, I show you how I would teach this basic movement, step by step.

Thank you for breaking this down in such understandable steps. I'm a fairly new horse owner, and am still very green to riding. I need to remember that the horse responds to little "asks" and I need to break things down a little bit.

Thank you for this video. My OTTB and I have been struggling with turn on the forehand. I did it today both direction using your suggestions. It wasn't perfect or pretty, but the front feet stayed planted and the hind end moved around. Thank you so much for you videos.... Lisa

What were you doing with your outside rein at the walk and trot? Was it the inside rein that you were lifting up in those two transitions?

Molly looks to be similar size and shape to my horse. Curious what Saddle you are using with her in this video?

I have heard experienced horse people talking about the importance of moving the hind quarters. I myself do not have a lot of experience & want to learn. I see the hindquarters moving from the standing position. I do not see it when Molly is in motion. How is she moving differently?

I think, the horse puts one hind leg more under her body. This hind leg must therefore carry more weight and will become stronger. At the same time the hind end will take weight from the front and , if that becomes a habit, will prevent early damage of the front legs. This is what good riding should be about: to keep your horse healthy. Am I right?

That looks pretty much like how we were taught to turn them Western. We moved the hindquarters with our legs instead of the front. I wonder what it would be like to do both at the same time. Maybe a tighter turn? That's just a guess, though. I've never ridden English.
