I needed to mount a 360W solar panel on my 8' x 12' storage shed which is completely powered off-grid. I decided to go with the Mini Rail with Flashing from Signature Solar and I think it worked great. I will walk you through a complete installation but also help you avoid any common issues you might encounter on your own installation.

Check these out as well which are handy for small arrays. More holes through the roof with these but you don't need to hit the rafters kzread.info/dash/bejne/a61sqs-AaMi_oZs.html

I like it! I would use a bit of a different method for a lag screw miss. Instead of securing the 2x6 (2xWhatever) with two screws on each side, I'd use an actual steel bracket on both sides and secure it to the rafters that way. A bit more expensive... more nails or screws plus the two brackets, but that way it actually becomes part of the structure and will strengthen the roof for the work. Whereas with the two nails in from the sides... that won't strengthen the roof at all because it is all sheer load.

In regards to panel orientation, i recently watched a video showing vertically mounted bifacial panels facing east and west showing some interesting results. It would be cool to see you test this as well just to get another perspective.

Thanks for the feedback. That would be an interesting test and I do have 4 bifacial panels that i could use for something similar. I will add it to the list 👍

@@everydaysolar the video i saw was recently done by Undecided with Matt Farrell. And he just released one comparing his new solar panel roof to a tesla solar roof. Also was pretty interesting.

A bit off topic but I wonder if you could discuss sizing a system that would serve as a backup to house essentials when power is out (snowstorms/thunderstorms)? Say, just running the gas furnace or just running the fridge for 12 or 24 hours. I think this would be of interest to many people. Would a system like this one in the shed suffice? If not then how long would it last?

I know rafters are supposed to be 16 inches on center. However between the builders inaccuracy and my own lack of precision, I always manage to miss at least one. If I can access the underside, I have used nails to mark where they are. I just put sealant in the hole and trust the flashing is enough to cover it.

For sure, honestly I think the majority of installers miss at least a few just hopefully not too many. Thanks for the feedback.

what size wiring should I use for my solar panels to the Oupes Mega 3? Any other items I need to hook them up?

  • @everydaysolar

The size of wire will be selected predominantly based off the about of current you will be running through the wires and the length. On top of just having the right wire to handle the current you would like to keep your line losses under 2% if possible. This video will walk you through what you need to know and also there is a line to our calculator kzread.info/dash/bejne/eIGtyrN6p8TdYrQ.html
