How to mix your paints for the perfect dutch pour acrylic pour painting

** please note: when speaking I mixed up the terms "viscosity" and "pigment". Viscosity means how thick the paint is and pigment means how much of the color, or pigment is in the paint. **
In this video I'll walk you through detailed steps for how I like to mix my dutch pour paints. My basic ratio is 2 parts American Flood Floetrol, 1 part paint, and water to thin. I'll show you how I measure...or don't measure...my pouring medium to paint ratio, how I mix and how I determine when the paints are the right consistency to achieve a gorgeous dutch pour painting. I'll also show you how to determine how much paint and water to add for different brands and different thicknesses of paints. Stay until the end to see how I test my mixed paints using the drip test and what to do if they don't match.
I hope you find this video helpful. Please let me know if you have any further questions by dropping them in the comments section below.

One of the best tutorials I've seen for mixing paint - and I've seen quite a few over the last couple of years! Very helpful and informative and explained in a manner that is simple and easy. Only thing is it's a little bit hard to see your measuring clearly with the background being white but with your explanations it didn't matter too much. Thank you Becca 😊😊

Amazon has a strainer lid for Floetrol that screws on, and you can keep on and put the main lid back on over it. Tracie Reed may have them, too. I started with a piece of a nylon stocking, but it sagged too much when I would pour it.

I've been doing the same thing with the stockings to strain it as I use it. It's so easy and efficient. I do the same thing on paints, too, if I happen to catch on to the bottle of paint containing "things" of various sorts within it. One time I had Artist Loft bottles of white that had little things in the paint. It took me a while to figure out where it was coming from as I kept getting these tiny little blobs all through my dried paintings. It was so annoying. Eventually I figured out it was those bottles of white it was coming from, and I put the panty hose strainer on them. It works like a charm! Great minds figure out the same sorts of things. 😉 Yes, definitely - get the floetrol in, then the paint, mix that up, and THEN start mixing in bits of water, a little at a time so you don't over do it accidentally. Fixing that is not as easy as just doing it gradually and stopping when it is correct in consitency. I've noticed that works best for me as well, and, like you, LOL, I did not start out having that realization. I sure did NOT start out putting in the products in that order back in the beginning! LOL 🤣 But doing it other ways was a fabulous teacher. Great video! 🥰

This is a great demonstration for mixing paints. I love that you did the super up-close view. Great job in getting those shots in! I have noticed when I let my mixed paints sit on the shelf for a few days or longer they tend to thicken a little. I usually do a new test before I just jump in and use the paints on an actual canvas from pre-mixed paints I had ready and adjust if needed. Maybe your experience is different? Love the video.

Your last test shows the viscosity. The gold is highly pigmented and the magenta is thicker, really viscous and a lower pigment. a very nice demo.

Good lesson and demonstration. I did mu first dutch pour today (if I can call it that) but my paint was much thicker. I'll know what to do different tomorrow.

I don't mean to correct you, but "Viscosity" refers to the thickness of the paint. I think the word you are looking for is that Golden paints are highly pigmented. Meaning they have a lot of the actual color pigment added to the binders. You will find Golden is the most highly pigmented and Winsor Newton and Amsterdam and just below Golden in quantity and quality of pigments. Liquitex Proffessional is right up there with them as well. The Liquitex basics are more student grade. Meaning they lose some of their color when thined so you have to be careful to not over thin them. With the viscosity the best way to explain them is heavy body paints, soft body paints, liquid body paints and the least viscous is the Alcohol Inks. If something is said to be very viscous it is very thick like the hard body paints. I'm sorry to explain all that to you on an open forum. Please forgive me. But I would hate to see you go on and never learn the difference. You did an excellent job on your presentation. Happy painting.

I have found that using the same consistency for all the paints, works best for me. Thicker or thinner base might effect the flow of the other paints

Just stumbled on your channel and I’m so glad I did. I have a Cricut cutting machine and I switch between projects so sometimes I forget how to do things such as mix the paints. I remember watching Olga and other Dutch pour artists and they all seemed to have a different approach to mixing the paints. You, however, have taken away my confusion. Thanks for the simple instructions. I’m currently working on my craft room organizing and now I can’t wait to get done so I can start doing the painting again. The only thing I noticed was that sometimes, when you were showing the paints, the camera didn’t pick it up. It was maybe too high. I am definitely subscribing and will be watching.

Hi Becca! I actually just sent you a message on Facebook. I've been doing fluid art for about 3 years and have tried and tried to get this technique down. Your video is the closest and most consistent that I've came! Thank you SO SO MUCH! I'm going to spread the word and let people know that this is the video to watch. It helped me so much and I am so thankful. I think that nobody else gets as close as you got to the camera with the cups so that we could really see in there and see the consistency for ourselves. Or at least that's how I feel! I do you have one question now though. I feel like my edges are too hard. They need to be more wispy, if that makes sense. Does that mean that my consistency still is not fluid enough? Will send pictures of what I'm talking about in the Facebook message. Much love from Myrtle Beach South carolina!

I mix my base colors with the same recipe, however I like to make them just a little bit thicker than the pour colors. If it is too thin the colors will sink beneath your base.

That's what I'm doing wrong!!! Mixing my base too thin & my colors disappear!! So glad I read thru all the comments. I've watched countless videos on mistakes & how to fix them. May I suggest u do a short tutorial on the base paint & different situations u could run into...what might happen if too thick, too thin, how thick to make ur base for a dutch pour, same with a kiss pour, etc. Thank u so much!!!

Hi Becca I am thoroughly enjoying your videos and always learn so much. I wonder if you could explain your mix that you keep in your squirt bottles ? I ask because I have yet to see recipes for large batch preparation for squirt bottles and on the other hand that you shouldn’t mix large quantities because pouring medium and Floetrol should not be left for too long before using ?

Straight pour is where the paints are layered in a cup and them poured out all at once. Here is an example: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKN1lMFvgM-wmMY.html Side, note, I am definitely not a straight pour expert! Check out Sarah Mack's channel. She does them really well!

Hi Becca, love, love your work. When including a metallic paint in your pour, do you seal with a satin or gloss varnish? And where do you sign your name? I'm thinking on the bottom or back of the frame. Please let me know what medium you use. Many thanks

Generally I think the metallic paint looks better with gloss varnish, but it kind of depends on the overall look of the painting.

Watching from the Philippines. I hope you see this.... In the Philippines, a quart in of floetrol is around $36.00... too expensive for me. Have you tried "Mont Marte Acrylic Flow Medium"? What are your thoughts??? Please answer.... :) . Thanks!!!
