I realised I didn’t really explain it well- when your limiter ceiling is low, and you run a high volume sound (the bass in this instance) everything gets turned down, but when the bass isn’t playing, the level jumps up again as the synths aren’t loud enough to trigger the limiter

i'd overdrive 1st and then do regular limiting. the distortion flattens the signal so u can push it higher in the limiter and get more volume

i have realized the best chain imo is the ceiling limiter into saturation (i use waveshaper’s Soft clip presets 1-6 and edit them a little) into gain makeup limiter, with maybe an EQ shelf after to dial in/lower the bass a bit

I'm sure this technique might be great in some aspect, but I dont think it sounds that great at the end of the day. At least, I dont think it does in this one song "let me go", which was shown as an example, because then you can't really hear the other melodies when the bass kicks in.

You didnt sidechain to the bass, you probably just put the limiter on the master. Look up how to sidechain
