Mixing heavy guitars shouldn't require a bunch of fancy trickery or 3rd party plugins.
As a matter of fact, you can do it within Reaper using nothing but the stock plugins that Reaper comes with.
In this video, I show you exactly how mixing heavy guitar tracks in Reaper can be a breeze if you know which stock plugins to use.

    By the way, you probably already know this, but Reaper's stock compressor (ReaComp) also allows you to adjust a high and low pass for the compressor to take action, meaning that it will only compress the areas where the high and low pass are settled to act, and in casses like these where it's only one area of frequencies that are needing the compression, it can work as well as the ReaXComp.

    I'm splitting hairs here, but actually, if you're only gonna use one band in the multiband compressor to control those palm mutes (100Hz to 250 Hz, as you specified), in Reaper, perhaps you need not even bother with the multiband compressor. The ordinary stock broadband compressor in Reaper has controls for input frequency detection (High and low pass, on sliders) that would probably allow you to do the same thing without affecting the other parts of the guitar tone. But like I said - splitting hairs.

  • @elpeluca7780

    @elpeluca7780

    I play it once, copy it and pan it left and right and it works well enough for me. I'd say cut the parts you want to make clean, copy them on additional tracks, and create a clean tone on the new tracks. No idea how to create a clean tone though.

    Great video. If you like Reaper and ReaQ , get JS ReEQ. Free as well , made for Reaper , and better than ReaQ

    You beat me to it. It is arguably the best EQ made for Reaper. Its basically Pro Q2 but free.

    The guitar tracks should be in wav file? if so, why?

    Quick question , let's say your tracking guitars that are tuned really low like F# 8 string tuning , would you need to EQ the tracks differently or would the same setting you demonstrated here be applicable? Thanks

    Have you ever thought about switching to reaper? I am thinking about it, what are your thoughts about it?

    I love using it from time to time, but my entire studio is build around Pro Tools and my engineers all use Pro Tools as well. If I were starting over, I'd definitely use Reaper.

    I used to use a crap load of third party plugins and it was not necessary most of the time. Reapers stock ones are plenty good enough to do the work.

    I agree 100%! I own a ton of third party plugins and only use a very small percentage of them.

    For those of us using Cubase (like me) and frustrated with how the built-in multicomp has automatic make-up gain, you can actually get the reaper plugins for cubase here: www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/

    Its been 3 years and a divorce since I recorded guitar...my question is I used to love a plugin I think it was called Sony dolby digital or something it would just make the entire track sound amazing. Any one know what it was ?.
