How to mix a musical on the X32 with X32 Theatre Control

Ғылым және технология

I was faced with challenge of mixing a musical with a live band and 17 wireless mics on the X32, which has one of my least favorite systems for scene recall. X32 Theatre Control came to the rescue and made this show a joy to mix, despite the console limitations. The app is easy to get started, but also feature rich, so I hope this video will persuade you to try it out. Let me know how it goes for you!
Thanks to Lisa, Jason, Krysti, Kaeli and everyone at Alive & Kickin for their support with this production.

I love to geek out about the physics of sound. This channel focuses on the growing opportunity for live sound engineers to improve their confidence and consistency through the understanding of the principles of sound system design and optimization. My goal is to make this channel upfront and honest about my success and failure, so you can learn from both.
I am always open to suggestions and feedback so please comment on this video or contact me through my site.

Hey Nathan, I'm about to do a theatre show on an X32. Have done a previous one with a Allen & Heath SQ5, which has great scene control, but didn't think the Behringer did the same thing. Your video was great and gave me all the tools and processes to be fully in control for this production. Thanks heaps!

It’s very cool software, which I had the pleasure of using on a show a while back. I know the guy who writes the software. I can’t disclose much, but there are some very cool things in the pipeline which I got to try out.

@@nathanlively He sure is. He came to the theatre while we were in rehearsal. The show was a nightmare, but his software was an absolute dream, and this is coming from someone who routinely uses DiGiCo for theatre shows.

I've been using it the last 4-5 shows. That makes M/X32 musical friendly. Before that, I used palladium, but my workflow is just faster with X32tc. I use the integration with streamdeck and QLab every time.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to discover this program. I'm not a sound guy, I'm a TD, but I'm always looking for a more efficient way to run our musicals. And we have an X32 with a novice operator. Who is struggling.

Thanks for the video Nathan. I did a similar gig using Qlab to automate mutes on an A&H Qu16 for a band and 10 radio mics. There is no way I could have run the show single handed otherwise. Qlab was also doing Sound Fx and stepping through lighting cues as well (in Lightkey using OSC). I really appreciated that I could rent Qlab licences by the day.

X32TC is fantastic and in my opinion makes the X32/M32 series the most usable low cost console for mixing musical theatre. I could be wrong but I don't think X32TC will do level automation on it's own. And that's why I personally never use it for the band inputs. I like to use the Snippets or I just use the Scenes built into the console. If you have X32TC set to fire off cues in QLab then QLab can do even more crazy stuff via OSC. It's a bit convoluted because the operator needs to keep track of what software is doing what and when, rather than just having it all built into the console. I also highly recommend using the Main Stereo Bus as the master band to house fader. That way you don't chew up a DCA for it. That assumes of course that all your outputs are being fed by the Matrix. Personally even before I found X32TC I think the X32 console was a great theatre desk, mostly due to its OSC control ability. If you dig into all of it's automation abilities, they are quite extensive, with Snippets, Scenes and Cues (cues can recall a scene or a snippet or both). The biggest issue is the limited number of 100 scenes and 100 snippets. I actually prefer this however to any of the Yamaha consoles (I think they are frankly the worst theatre desks unless you have Palladium), I think it's just as good as the higher end Allen and Heaths and better than their cheap consoles. The only one I would say is better is a Digico but that's just not even a fair comparison since the price difference is just so huge. The biggest issue I have with these (other than just not really preferring to give my money to Behringer) is that they are only 32 channels and there are not enough busses and there are only 6 matrix outputs. So, they are OK if you're in small venue. If you're in a big venue you run out of routing control really fast and even in some nicer 200 and 300 seat houses, I run out. You can always add a DSP to hadle some of that of course but then maybe you should just buy a better console. Depends on the venue and it's needs. I also regularly have to use two of these consoles strapped together so I have enough inputs. One just for wireless and one for the band and then I shove the playback into whichever one I can. That opens another whole pandora's box for automation though. And it works well if the band is remote in another space but if it's in a traditional pit, then the double latency hit of the console can be an issue.

Also I would add that it's really disappointing that the Behrigner Wing console just isn't ready for prime time (at least the last time I checked) with regards to theatre shows. It doesn't have nearly as much flexibility with its scene recalls and I don't think it has as robust of an OSC implementation either. X32TC won't work with a wing and the last time I touched base with James, he had no intention of working with the Wing console. Really a dumb move on Behringer's part here.

Agree with EVERYTHING you said here. I use the X32/M32 in conjunction with X32TC frequently and it takes Theater mixing from marginally painful to quite pleasant. 100% on your A&H take as wel. Qu series - NO. SQ and above are fantastic. I actually like the iPad app for the SQ better than the Avantis. Frankly, the Avantis one kind of sucks. I typically use Mixing Station instead which is the best iPad mixing interface anywhere in my opinion.

If you were purchasing a digital console to run a musical theatre production, which one would you buy (same price range as the X32)?

Does anyone know if there's similar automation software for Yamaha consoles? That looks easier than messing with Focus Recall.

Unsure. I guess I don't use scenes on the X32 and don't really understand what they are. Sounds a good question to email the developer.

Hi - Scene is total console content, patching, routing, etc etc. That's what the recall safes are there for. Snippets for tiny (and fast) changes, cues to run those changes. It is actually pretty good but not as good as this software@@nathanlively
