    Wow beautiful stitches. Such a gorgeous machine. I looked at some of the specialty edging machines they did in the 80's and needed smelling salts after the price shock in South Africa............lol our currency is worth nothing any more.............go BRIKS go.

    Correct tensions are necessary to get it to sew well but they're easy to set. Basically the needle thread and lower looper need to be very tight and the upper looper (floss) needs to be very loose

    5 cones of 40w embroidery thread for the upper looper. I now use habanddash.com premosoft sewing thread for the needle and Tex 70 sewing thread for the lower looper. I was using monofilament for the lower looper so wouldn't have to change with each color but it was breaking too much so I switched to the Tex 70 that I get from Cleaners Supply

    I was wondering what feed eccentrics you are using. Does your machine have the standard #28's or did you go to a higher stitch count? You must be using a servo motor to get such slow stitch speed, what brand and model? The speed looks nice and controllable for such detail work.

    I know this is an old video, but have a question . I know the machine you are using is called a merrow, but what is the type of stitch used around the boarder of the patch? I assume there are other names machines that will do the same? I am looking at starting to make my own custom made patch blanks for sublimation patchs and was wondering what type of machine I would need to make the boarder around them. Seem machines that look the same , but called overstitich machines

    +Rogelio rodrigiez noh Not sure what you're asking. Are you not sure how to thread the merrow machine? The order of the holes on the machine the thread goes through? When I switch thread colors I simply cut the thread by the thread stand, put the new thread on and tie the ends together in a square knot and pull through the machine. So when I'm using 5 spools for the upper looper I tie all five of the old color to the five strands of the new color together at once pull them through. I now use a nylon thread for the lower looper and never change it. Dave

    What size Cam are you using for patch borders? Also are you just using 3 spools of thread? i just got this machine yesterday and im having a heck of a time getting the stitches close, i have size 28 cam, using 40 thread.

  • @daviddavies5428

    @daviddavies5428

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Jenny Alfonso Not sure what size cam I have really...just whatever was standard. I use 5 cones of embroidery 40wt thread for the upper looper. Practice, practice, practice. The trick is in the corners. Imagine a curved line to the inside of the edge of the material and force the needle to follow that patch. I'm using both hands to accomplish this so the curve is smooth. The fingers of my left hand start the corner and I finish with the fingers of my right hand...and if you will I "tug" on the patch a little in the corner to force the needle to stitch closer than it would if the pressure foot were doing the feeding. You need to have it thicker in a corner so the outside edge is "full" of stitches. I hope you have a servo motor on the machine so you can slow it way down until you get comfortable. If you don't have a servo motor you need to call Merrow and order one!

  • @jalfonsorio

    @jalfonsorio

    8 жыл бұрын

    +David Davies yes I have a servo and have it turned all the way down. So u are using 5 cones total? 2 for upper and 2 for lower and one for needle?

  • @daviddavies5428

    @daviddavies5428

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Jenny Alfonso ...7 cones total. One for needle, one for lower looper and 5 for the upper looper. I'm actually using nylon thread now for the lower looper so I never have to change it. The nylon if more finicky as it will snap more readily if I try to "tug" to much on the material or if I'm unattentive and let the material lift up at all. But I've practiced enough that the nylon thread doesn't break too often and when it does since it is so stiff it is very easy to rethread it.

    +David Davies oh wow that's very interesting!!!! I will try adding more cones to mine because it's just not filling in. I'm sure some of my tensions are off as I just got the machine and it was new. I'll have to play around more. Nothing like crunch time! Ugh, I have patches to do :/

  • @daviddavies5428

    @daviddavies5428

    +Jenny Alfonso Needle tension and lower looper tension have to be pretty much as tight as you can make them. Upper looper pretty much as loose as you can get it. Plus I use merrow floss whenever I can instead of embroidery thread. I trust your patches are fairly stiff before you try to merrow them.

  • @daviddavies5428

    @daviddavies5428

    8 жыл бұрын

    +G Viken I'm not sure I understand what you're looking for. You are able to vary the width of the merrow stitch. There's an adjustment of the machine to do this...I have some customers that like narrow merrow stitching and others like the standard wider merrow stitch. You can't really vary the width as you're doing a single patch though. On my machine if I try to go too wide it will break the lower looper thread. I believe Merrow makes machines designed to make even wider merrow stitches than I can do on my machine but I've never had a need to investigate those machines further.

  • @v1ken

    +David Davies I guess what I'm trying to ask is it possible to do narrow merrow to start then go wider then back to narrow, all in one pass...

  • @daviddavies5428

    @daviddavies5428

    8 жыл бұрын

    +G Viken I suppose if you really wanted to you could stop part way through the patch - probably best with the needle in the patch -- adjust the width of the stitching and then start up again. But this is with me using the edge guide you can see in the video. If you were to take this off you could fluidly change the width of the merrow. When I go around corners I visualize where I want the needle to penetrate the patch to keep the width consistent. I just use the guide on the straights because it's easy and I don't have to focus on what the machine is doing but there isn't anything to say you have to use the edge guide. I think if were going to try that I'd put a run stitch about 1mm inside where I wanted the merrow to go. Then I'd focus on keeping the needle just outside of the run stitch...which can go in and out to create the different merrow widths you're looking for. Might take some practice to be consistent but it's possible. A servo motor to slow things down would be mighty helpful.

  • @daviddavies5428

    @daviddavies5428

    No video in Spanish, sorry. If you have the Merrow MG-3U the width of the border is controlled by the screw on the front of the machine that is under the needle plate and to the left of where the thread goes vertical before going under the needle plate. Loosen that screw and the guide that is just to the left of the needle will move left or right to adjust the width of the stitches. I use five cones of embroidery thread for the upper looper when I don't have the correct color merrow floss. Getting the correct tension is very important in creating a proper stitch. The upper looper threads must have very light tension and the lower looper thread must have very, very tight tension.
