How to Merge Duplicate Photos on a Mac: macOS Fundamentals
Ғылым және технология
📸 Is your Photos library out of control ? Maybe imported the same picture into your Photos library multiple times? In this video we are going to explore how to merge duplicate photos on a Mac.
Merging Photos on a Mac was a new feature introduced in the Photos app in macOS Ventura. This is a great benefit to those who receive a ton of pictures from friends and family and are always adding them to your library. Before you know it, your Photo Library on your Mac has as many duplicate photos and consumes a lot of stprage space.

do a select all on the duplicates then you can merge all
No "Merge All" button, but if you select one picture, then "ctrlA" all the pairs will be selected and the prompt will be "Merge 11,240 photos?" ... poof just like "Merge All"

Or you can Select All, right click and choose the merge all at the bottom of the menu.

To add to John's tip...when I tried this I had two options "Merge ### Exact Copies Only..." and "Merge ### Items". So you can prevent Photos from merging items that are not EXACT when doing it in bulk.
I almost bought into Clean My Max X b/c I thought Photos did not have a duplicate feature like my 12 Pro Max did...so glad I searched for a video on this! Thanks for the tip!

Glad it was helpful Alicia. In regards to CleanMyMac X, I actually highly recommend it. I provide it as a part of my service to all my small business clients to help do simple tasks on the machine that keep it running healthy. Here is a link you can download it and get a 14 day free trial. I will actually be doing videos on this application in the near future! download.macpaw.com/repairshop/simpletech/CleanMyMacX.dmg If there is a video you'd like to see, let us know and we will see what we can do! Thanks!
Merge all is just by selecting all of them. One thing u didn’t mention was to ensure if needed you need to adjust the meta data (esp the dates will show different many times as u know before merging it because it usually takes the latest capture date which as u know can be way off if any cropping was done ect . Once u merge they go right back so do it in the dup folder screen
Yes I find it, You need to select all by comment+A than pres Enter

Command + A is a great keyboard combination that works as "Select All" in all applications. Thanks for pointing that out.
select all under edit ,, merge all under image
For some reasons some photos look identical but with different file size. You can hold Command key and select all the small ones, meaning lower resolution ones. Then delete them with one click.
I have photos that I have taken from my library and placed them in multiple different photo albums that I created. If I merge duplicate photos, does the app consider the same photo in those various albums to be duplicates, and do they remove those duplicates from those albums?
How much time does it need to scan a 120gb library. I waited 4 hours and its still saying that its Finding the Duplicates. Great video btw
What if my duplicate photos got different dates, and I want to keep the oldest version (and with the best resolution)? I was expecting the "Merge" button may do that. But I just can't find any settings about keeping the oldest photo, so I have to manually delete the newer ones (maybe with better resolution). Thanks
I have something like 72k duplicates in an enormous library (some have 10 copies!) and command+a selects all but then I’m promoted for (button 1) merging exact dupes only, or (button 2) merging everything including near-misses. My question is, can I do exacts first to get them out of the way then later sift thru what remains, or does the utility assume I’ve decided to keep all near-miss duplicates and like “forget” them? Too many “gotchas” in computer land these days 💢 Edit: I tried a small experiment but it doesn’t provide the same prompt even with exact and non-exact duplicates. Has to be a big batch apparently. What could go wrong?😂

When in doubt, just remember that d eleted duplicates appear in the Recently Deleted album, where you can recover or permanently delete them. Thanks for adding the update. 👍🏼
Hey, Chris. In cases where duplicate photos have different metadata, which metadata is kept?

It’s hard to say what the program will choose. The prompt states “Merging will keep one version of the duplicates that combines the highest quality and relevant data…”. So if there’s a particular one with metadata you want to keep, I’d simply delete the duplicate rather than merge them. Based upon the system prompt, I’d assume it keeps the data of the image with the highest quality.
It would be fun to experiment to merge two duplicates that are each in different albums ... I did ! ... guess what ? ... the merged photo was still in both albums! ... but no duplicates in the library.

Thanks for the additional info John!
duplicates sections aren't showing duplicates .. but i have 100s of duplicates .. i have imported the folders but still from last 2 days i am not able to find any photo under duplicate section
Astrophotography pics can get labelled as duplicates. Very similar but discreet shots. Any idea how I can say “hey, these aren’t duplicates.” Any idea how to trigger photos to “scan” for duplicates? I have many more than it’s found so far.

Thank you for the comment. At the moment the photos app looks at duplicates automatically. You cannot scan or tell it they are not duplicates. Hopefully the process gets those features in the future.
I found that two photos can look the same but when you check INFO, one has a label I added describing the people/date and the other does not have this info. I merged several photos before I realized this and all photos that had ID on them were gone. I went to my Recently Deleted and restored them but I cannot find them back in the file they should be in. So many questions. Are the duplicates actually in an album? Or are they duplicates in Imports? When you recover the photo after it has been deleted, why can I not find it back in the album?

Hi Kay. All great questions. I didn't have any files that showed different metadata (the INFO you mention), but I did work through the merge and restore from Recently Deleted. Initially when I restored from Recently Deleted, I experienced the same issue in which the photo did not appear back in my Duplicates album. However, giving the computer and Photos some time to process, the image did reappear and now I have both duplicates back. The duplicates are not actually stored in an Album. The Duplicates you see in the sidebar is more like a Smart Album Apple has created. If you right click on the image, the second option down should be "Show in All Photos". Hope this helps.
