Jane, you could try pinning the gauze to tissue (or other) paper first so it's anchored better. Then cut through both the gauze and paper. That should help keep it from moving around so much. HTH ~Bobette

Natalie, it depends on how long you want your veil to be (it'll be the length from where you want it to attach to your head to where you want the end of veil to fall, plus the length of blusher and additional tiers and add 10% or so for wiggle room). Also, you may want to buy 2-3 times more than the veil will need so you have extra to experiment with or redo if you change your mind about something.

Could you fold it in quarters first and cut the curve all at once? Or do you not recommend that?

Phoebe, it's possible but I couldn't get it even enough and got frustrated, so went with two steps for the "craft challenged." (lol) Someone with more skill could probably do it pretty easily.

how do you measure the tulle or whatever fabric you use for veil to make cathedral length? do I measure from where I'm going to attach it or from the base of my head?

+Sam's Corner Hi Sam, To see exactly how long it will trail, measure from where you will attach it.

+Milda Malinauskaite These directions should work. You'd measure out 170 inches plus the length of the blusher (or second tier, which you'd fold back).

what if my material is not wide enough

That's a tougher situation, Jessica. You could try laying two widths side by side to make it wide enough and carefully sew them together or add a stitch here and there. If you can somehow make the seam fall inside a fold/gather that could work. But either way it will not be totally smooth. I would do a small sample and see how obvious it looks. If that does not work out, there is both both 72" and 108" wide tulle here: www.myonlineweddinghelp.com/products/product-category/diy-wedding/fabric-ribbon-trim/tulle-fabric/
