    This might be a stupid question, because I'm not a welder, but are there fumes created during welding that are heavier than the rising smoke? I don't understand why the hood is not placed above the welding area instead of to the side.

    So that they do not obscure the welder's view or get in the way. You don't want to place them above the welder's head also, because then you couldn't capture the fume before it's inhaled by the welder. Also hoods work more effectively if you place them near a surface. Like shown on this video but maybe a little closer.

    rule of thumb is that you should always be pulling dirty air away from the breath zone ,not towards or passed it .
