This works really well if you’re dropping a tree and want to know where the top will hit the ground. I’ve used it many times and it is accurate. I’m speaking of the the thumb method,or you can use a stick.

I watched several videos on how to measure a tree's height. In every aspect this was clearly the best. Thanks!

Try the bendy over trick when you’re 60 ..becomes a fallee over trick

If you want to accurately measure a tree then you should use a theodolite and trigonometry, but the point of this method is that it is quick and very simple. You say that "the taller the object the less accurate it is", but that's not the case; the error margin is still the same, but that resultant error is larger. The accuracy doesn't change.

To get an accurate measurement you use a clinometer but this does a quick and decent job. Well done sir.

Ah! Excellent idea! That's a very good plan! The only downside is that I live in Birmingham and we see the sun here about three times a year. Otherwise, that's a great idea!

Fantastic video and it worked perfectly! I was not after precision, so this method did the trick and was simple and easy. Great job!

Notice the bright sunshine and shadows in the video? This is the method I came up with years ago. I stand by the tree's shadow, measure my shadow(I'm 5' 9"). My shadow will be the standard. For example: If my shadow is 4', I convert that that 4' shadow to equal 5' 9".
