How to Manage Your Vining Sweet Potatoes In Small Spaces | Guten Yardening
Sweet potatoes are one of our favorite vegetables to grow at Guten Yardening, and in this video we talk about ways that you an grow sweet potatoes in smaller growing spaces.
We focus on how to care for vining sweet potatoes vs bush variety sweet potatoes so that they don't expand to take up all the space in your garden. Note, we do talk about both bush and vining sweet potatoes, even though most sweet potato varieties fall into the vining category.
We talk about whether or not you should prune your sweet potatoes and what removing the apical end of the sweet potato vine does to your plant. We talk about trellising sweet potatoes, and we also talk about growing sweet potatoes in a vertical garden. In this case, we are growing some of our bush and vining variety sweet potatoes in a GreenStalk Vertical garden.
We hope that this video is helpful to you whether or not you are growing your own sweet potatoes this year. We don't want anyone to believe that they don't have the space to grow sweet potatoes.
Thank you so much for enjoying this video with us!

We certainly love to grow and harvest sweet potatoes. What are you growing this season?
A made an arch from a cattle panel and put a muck bucket on each side with the vines in them. It was easy to weave them through the panel. You can plant stuff under the arch, or have a wedding. Lol. Your choice.

I love that idea, and we have talked a good bit about getting cattle panel to put between some of our raised beds. How easy was it for you to transport the panel?

@@GutenGardening easy in a truck. Fold in half and tie the ends together. It will be shaped like a tear drop. Slide it into truck.
I’ve got 2 vining varieties in my GreenStalk & I’m using their plant supports to train the vines around. It’s working really nicely so far!

Our pleasure!
If cutting the tips off will it create smaller potatoes?
Good video. I just harvested my potatoes. How do I prune for nice sized potatoes?
I have never grown sweet potatoes. I would like to try some this fall, see if I can get a late winter or early spring harvest. I’m not sure if it will work here in South Carolina but I’m up for experimenting.

You should! How low does your temperature get during the winter? Last season we tried growing sweet potatoes indoors. Here are a couple of the videos that document the initial setup kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGV3ttSyg9bfiLQ.html and the results kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWqjxbWbaMicXdo.html.

@@GutenGardening thanks!!! I’ll check those out. Our temps might get into the high 20s but that’s in late January real early February. Our first frost date is Nov. 9… so I MAY be able to squeeze a good crop in time if I plant early/mid August🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️

@@StubbsMillingCo. If you have the space and the sweet potatoes available, I would plant them ASAP. It will take some time for the plants to get establish and the warmer months would guarantee better sweet production.

@@StubbsMillingCo. Awesome! We will be on the look out.
