I turned this video on because I am a woodlot owner interested in improving my woodland management. I'm afraid I didn't learn anything here and I doubt that even the greenest viewer would. I was hoping to learn what you have done to improve your woodland to achieve your goals. You mentioned spraying young trees and harvesting some at 50 year and that if you plant a tree now you will never see it mature. I hope that doesn't stop you from planting for your children's children and the life that dwells in a forest. You state "The forest we are in is a mature forest that will probably decay or be felled within the next 5 or 10 years." That is not forest management! That is destruction of an environment. That forest could live forever if it were not slash cut as was shown in one of the picture.

You are wrong. Felling a mature plantation and replanting the site is what forestry is about. There are many reasons: for example, plantations planted 50 years ago are ecologically useless as they have no life on the wood floor and involve virtually only one species, eg, scots pine. Also, forestry has to be commercially viable. Otherwise, you have a garden not a forest.

Monoculture plantations are one form of forestry. Not the best, in fact likely the worst. That is why I don't feel you have enlighten folks on best practices in managing a forest. Sorry! Calling a mixed forest that isn't slash cut a garden actually appeals to me. From now on I will call my 30 acre forest a forest garden. Don't get me wrong I harvest from my forest but I do it surgically which is non destructive.

What none of the comments so far seem to address is that there is a continum of land management from open grazing and cropland to mature, uneven aged old growth, and the individual landowner should be given plenty of leeway to use his ground as he sees fit, provided he does not actively harm a neighboring property in so doing. The problem with modern environmental thought is its intense focus on one size fits all answers for complex social, economic, and political issues.

One thing he mentions is the need to cull Deer populations. It does seem tragic but unfortunately, the wolf population which would normally regulate it has been decimated so the deer overgraze and create problems.

As a Forester they do have a place in FM. However when I'm restocking or establishing a woodland I insist on untreated trees and zero use of Herbicides/insecticides. As much as it annoys people above me at times, I work with the land an vegitation/soil classes on sites to have it as natural as is possible to do so. It's such a vast field of study that I believe is misunderstood in the main.

No, an experienced deer stalker built it for me. I would say make it wide enough for two people, unless you like being on your own for long periods of time. And be careful. I know of at least one person who has ended up in a wheel chair by being careless in a high chair. Safety first, always. You can also get mobile ones made. Or buy a prefab mobile one.

The bark beetle killed much of our soft wood. We struggle here because we can't compete against the free lumber that the Canadian government gave to the big forestry companies. Unfortunately corruption at the upper level makes things difficult for us small scale guy. I found a small niche selling firewood and other forest products and I do enjoy my work. My operation and labour of love can be seen on my channel.

Why use commercial poison to protect trees? Do you sell your timber or leave it on the ground? Here in Ohio they leave mature hardwood trees laying on the ground for the ants and insects. That's what a Ranger sarcastically said to me. What do you think? Thanks Rick ps they cry about needing money but won't sell thousands of trees that can be sold at a lumber mill.

Nice to capture the wildlife instead of 'culling', although I understand that in the absence of apex predators such as wolves or wildcats, the numbers of herbivores such as deer may become damaging to the ecosystem. Hence, a person with a gun becomes the top predator. I don't like 'game hunting' though. Killing animals for fun seems barbaric.

R/whooooooooooosh - they went straight over your head. Those are not incompatible. He needs young trees initially to start the forest, and as they mature, it becomes too many trees, so he needs to cut them down. If he lets the weeds takeover, then there are no trees for the forest. Open your mind man. This guy has been managing forests for most of his life, so I think he knows more than you do about how to maintain a forest.

What people like this do not say is that woods used by shoots require the breeding of game birds for people to pay up to £3000 a day to kill for fun, which requires game keepers killing birds of prey across the country, I know an ex game keeper who was told to kill owls etc even though they were protected yes this video paints a pretty picture but much cruelty is done by modern land management to wildlife and its been going going on for years and years, thus the dramatic decline of UKs wildlife.
