HOW TO - Making An Axle Reforming Tool

Due to the number of requests that I have received asking about my Axle Reforming System (A.R.S.) I decided to cobble together this short video describing what it is and how it is made. I hope that all who watch will gain some insight and knowledge and that they may make their own, and duplicate my results for the betterment of the Matchbox car community!

Well done. That should take care of questions from many folks. For those of us in the States, many “finishing” nails come with a divot in the head already so the nail can be “set” or countersunk into the wood with a centerpunch. A couple of early steps might be avoided, but the rest is sage instruction.

Excellent tutorial Marty! One thing I would add is that those who do not have the vice for the drill press. Can hammer the nail to be drilled a couple centimeters into a section of scrap wood. Make sure it vertically aligned and centered to the drill bit. Before clamping to the press table and drilling. Although not as good as the vice is does offer an alternative to those without one. Thanks for all the amazing videos Marty. Cheers!

instead of using the grinder to get the nail head flat. try this, insert the nail upside down in to your drill press, turn drill press on and lower the nail head down onto a flat metal file or sand paper, this will make it perfectly flat and will give it a machined finish

We used to clamp up the drill vice and drill a hole with a small drill between the jaws, this helps if you want to hold something vertically in the drill vice. Only works if the jaws are not hardened obviously.

Wow that's a lot of work. Here in the US our finish nails already come with a round dimple in the head. I refine it with a small round diamond burr in the dremel which i think gives it a more dome shape (just a thought). Either way your creation gave us all a good starting point and a perfect solution the problem.

If you put the filed blank in the chuck of your drill press, turn your drill on and bring it down on some fine-ish emery stuck onto a secured bit of wood with double sided, you will do two things: True the angle of the head; put some machining marks on the surface of the head. This will show where you need to centre pop the head. Happy hunting.
