HOW TO - Making An Axle Reforming Tool
Due to the number of requests that I have received asking about my Axle Reforming System (A.R.S.) I decided to cobble together this short video describing what it is and how it is made. I hope that all who watch will gain some insight and knowledge and that they may make their own, and duplicate my results for the betterment of the Matchbox car community!

Harry Ballzack now I have some very bad images in my head! 😂😂😂
Very effective system. Your A.R.S. doesn't put up with any crap.
Well done. That should take care of questions from many folks. For those of us in the States, many “finishing” nails come with a divot in the head already so the nail can be “set” or countersunk into the wood with a centerpunch. A couple of early steps might be avoided, but the rest is sage instruction.
Everybody loves a good A.R.S. Genius Marty. I’m happy with that......

Your welcome Dave, thanks for watching.
I have no idea how or why I came upon this channel and I played with my last Matchbox car sometime around 1970. That said, these videos are SO very relaxing and interesting to watch. Meditation, really. Please don’t change the background music, as it really fits so well with your calm voice. Just awesome.
Awesome. Other KZread channels are using this method now. You should be proud how you've been able to help so many people that have adopted tbis method with such great results.
Nice to see you making an A.R.S. for yourself, without making an arse of yourself! Well done! :-)
Fastastic simply fantastic! I broke my head trying to do something to rearrange the axes of my miniatures, and the tool is simpler than I imagined !!! Thank you very much!! Hugs from Brazil!!
Amazingly clever tool. You’re the king of matchbox restorations!
Ah, an amazing ARS from down under...............just as amazing as you, yourself are! Thanks for sharing your methodology - and your ARS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
A good A.R.S is to die for.

Some people call this tool a rivet snap. You can buy them made from hardened steel from model engineering suppliers such as E J Winter.
Nice A.R.S.E (Axle Reforming System Equipment) in that shed ! haha.
Who could unlike one of Marty's makeovers? It makes no sense. Marty and Julie are lovely.
Gonna get me some ARS, thanks bud! Would never have thought of using nails like this , total brilliants
Excellent tutorial Marty! One thing I would add is that those who do not have the vice for the drill press. Can hammer the nail to be drilled a couple centimeters into a section of scrap wood. Make sure it vertically aligned and centered to the drill bit. Before clamping to the press table and drilling. Although not as good as the vice is does offer an alternative to those without one. Thanks for all the amazing videos Marty. Cheers!
Thank you!! I have been having trouble replicating the "nail dies." Not anymore! Thank you so much for making this video :)
That video was pure A.R.S.
instead of using the grinder to get the nail head flat. try this, insert the nail upside down in to your drill press, turn drill press on and lower the nail head down onto a flat metal file or sand paper, this will make it perfectly flat and will give it a machined finish

Great idea Dave, I must try this next time, thanks for the hint!
Thank you for showing us your A.R.S. Really nice of you.
You’ve said many times in videos “there’s videos explaining...” now there is a stand alone video that people can find easily. Good job ! Another interesting and fun video! And it’s about ars! We all love a nice ars... 😂
Thanks Martin I'm probably one of very few people that will really benefit from this video so thanks again
That was a rather serious video, I was waiting for Kevin to misbehave.
Hi Marty, great video & explanation, thank you!!! Best regards from Germany, Volker
Thank you for sharing how you make your ARS! And thank you for posting your video(s)!
You have a mancave in the garden. A great result.
was waiting for Kevin to pop up my daughter loves seeing him :)
Marty, thanks for share and show us your secrets. I follow all your videos. Regards from México.
We used to clamp up the drill vice and drill a hole with a small drill between the jaws, this helps if you want to hold something vertically in the drill vice. Only works if the jaws are not hardened obviously.
Hi Marty, what I did gain was an increased respect for your knowledge and workmanship. Thanks.
Exactly the kind of videos we need. These tips are great. Keep up the good work.
That was the most useful thing I learned all week. I know what I'm making today instead of cutting the lawn like I was supposed to do last week but was too busy learning how to electroplate toy cars. Priorities. Gotta have em.
Great idea Marty
You are an Innovator and an restoration role model so to speak ! Thank you for the know how Marty!!!
A very informative video; this is a really awesome technique for forming 'factory-style' axle-flanges. Great job, Marty!
Marty thanks for this, it has given me the confidence to try it myself.
Thanks for sharing that. I will be trying your method on my other projects.

Really nice to know that now!! Cheers from italy!
Wow that's a lot of work. Here in the US our finish nails already come with a round dimple in the head. I refine it with a small round diamond burr in the dremel which i think gives it a more dome shape (just a thought). Either way your creation gave us all a good starting point and a perfect solution the problem.
Thanks. Very informative video. I like forward to your next makeover video.
Thanks Marty great share, everything is super detailed here.
wonderful tutorial, very appreciated! I'm going to try to replicate it ASAP. Greetings from Italy
Thanks Marty !! A video that solved many problems for me !!
you nailed the ARS.
nice, Love it when you not only show us how you do your restorations but show how you do it.
Thank you for sharing this!
Marty This is a Great video. Thank you for posting it. Keep up the great work.
I'm from Guadalajara Mexico, I love your work!!! Great advice always!!! 😃
Excellent tutorial! Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see more videos like this - maybe something on how you clean and care for your airbrush.
Good video Marty.. Love the acronyms . More sure to follow ! Like to see a video on how to drill out the post without destroying it to put the little screws in. I have nearly blow out the sides of the post because of my sloppy workmanship in the past.
Always nice to watch your videos Marty. The Pop rivet axel idea is great to. But i dont use the allready formed side of it. I cut and reform that side to, so you have 4 beautiful equals that match the originals. Its all in the detail. 😋Greets from the Netherlands.
Thank You
Thanks for the upload!
Would a drop of lube on your ARS prevent piles of swarf building up in the recess ?
Thanks Marty, this will help much!!!
Thanks Marty, very informative
Very well explained.
I used to used the side of the grind stone to flattened small things like drill bits and other things.. Then i finish up with sand paper...
Thank you for your knowledge, you are a master!
Thanks so much for this useful video.
Always learning something good from you. Thanks a lot!!!

Well thought out and explained good video for midweek education keep them coming marty Chris (uk)
You Nailed It! Thanks man
Very interesting, a nail biting episode lol 😂.
Great filing technique.👍
If you put the filed blank in the chuck of your drill press, turn your drill on and bring it down on some fine-ish emery stuck onto a secured bit of wood with double sided, you will do two things: True the angle of the head; put some machining marks on the surface of the head. This will show where you need to centre pop the head. Happy hunting.
Thoroughly informative video and thanks for sharing another great renovation tip. “A little off the top.” I have the same hairstyle as you Marty, and that’s exactly what I tell my barber! Haha!!!!!!
Excellent video!
Thanks very much Marty! I've been tearing out what little hair I have left trying to replicate your ARS. (I've got quite a pile of pop rivets that I use as "test axles" in my attempts to get it right.) This video will be very helpful!

I hope so Rick. Had to get this one out of the way, so many people wanted to know!
Thank you, Marty.
You could put the nail in the chuck of a hand held drill, so that you can spin the nail as you grind the nail head on the bench grinder. Should help in keeping the grind perpendicular.

Thanks for the video! I’d often wondered about your ARS!
Great tutorial! 👍🏻
Brilliant Marty
Hi Marty, good video love the shed , All the Best Brian 🤗
In the manufacturing world it is know as a "Orbital Former", have a lovely one.
Very nice clear guide :)
Awesome Stuff marty
Great video Marty 👍
Works quickly, this Fast Axle Reforming Tool!
For those in the US who are not very carpentry-savvy, a 4 or 8 penny (4d-8d) finished nail isthe right nail to use.
