I've been looking for about 2 months now in Canada and I'm still having this problem. I just might try your method to save some cash.

Where did u find the fabric lids in Canada for 25 cents each. I can't find them cheaper than 45 cents and I have to buy 100 for that price.

Why don't you just re use the lids instead of making more?

The lids usually get pretty gross by the end of a cultures life. I've tried re-using them, but they end up really nasty and usually falling apart anyway by the end of the second use. Not only is the coffee filter part turning brown and smelly with fly poop, but I always end up with lots dead flies squished around the inside of the lip. I also have issues with larder beetles trying to break into my cultures, and they seem to be more attracted to the old smelly lids. It really sucks when a beetle chews through the coffee filter and releases hundreds of flies into your house. However, the main reason I don't re-use lids, is for mite prevention. Mites are very attracted to fly cultures, and they will take over and cause a culture to crash. Transferring old lids to new cultures is a sure way to by-pass my mite prevention strategies. The only time I've really had problems with mite infestation was when I was trying to re-use lids.
