How to Make Your Own Tinted Sunscreen | Skin Care Research
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
If you're looking for skin care information on how to make your own tinted sunscreen or moisturizer, look no further. In this video, I provide a brief overview of why tinted mineral sunscreens are important for skin health and anti-aging and I also show you which products I use to make a tinted sunscreen (links below).
In the video, I make a tinted sunscreen using the CeraVe mineral sunscreen SPF 30 with the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream. I use a dark BB cream because it provides not only titanium dioxide and iron oxides (which can help protect against blue light and visible light), but it also gives me more room to play with the mineral sunscreen to get the color or pigment I want for my skin type.
This DIY tinted sunscreen really helps me get the most out of mineral sunscreens, which are the holy grail of sunscreens because they can block UVA and UVB. I highly recommend mineral sunscreens because they're much more robust than chemical sunscreens; however, the white case precludes widespread use. That being said, you may want to make your own tinted mineral sunscreen using the products I mention in this video.
By the way, the information in this video only applies to mineral sunscreens. I do not know how an SPF might be affected by mixing in a tinted BB cream with a chemical sunscreen. Best to avoid using chemical sunscreens and stick with 100% mineral sunscreens to make your own tinted sunscreen.

This was so helpful and informative! Thank you for this!
Wow what a great idea! More people need to know about this. I've seen so many videos of people reviewing mineral sunscreens and always worried about the white cast. And here we have the perfect solution!

I wear bb cream on top when I use non tinted mineral sunscreens, but it makes me avoid using them because I don't really want an extra step. I don't know why I never thought of mixing them together. Thanks for this!

Definitely will be trying this!! In hopes it works, I wonder if using the NYX drops would be a good alternative for the Clinique one you mentioned. Maybe the spf would decrease a little if I add something with no zinc oxide or titanium dioxide?
@brandonmilesmay

I think the NYX drops will work just as well! It might decrease the SPF; there’s really no way of truly knowing unless it is sent to a lab to be tested. I honestly don’t think it interferes with the spf too much, but it’s hard to know for sure!

@@brandonmilesmay you're very welcome and I'm actually going to work on it today I'm getting ready for a cosplay walk with my friends at the end of the month and I was going to do a Megara-Hades mashup so gray skin but it's very hot where I'm at so I'm trying to figure something that's waterproof and lightweight
Before hearing that this mixing thing is a bad idea, I mixed Elta MD UV Elements 100% mineral tinted spf 44 (was too dark for me alone) with Cerave 100% mineral spf 50. The Elta MD has 10% transparent zinc oxide, 5.5% titanium dioxide. I had to add at least 50% of the tinted Elta MD to tint the Cerave spf 50 enough. It has seemed to work well cosmetically, but I have NO way to test whether the film it sets up to is legit. It’s hard to know whether it is worth it. I love how hydrating it is and the ingredients of both. However I don’t know if it is worth the risk. I have hyperpigmentation. I should probably just stick to my Elta MD UV physical tinted spf 41 (100% mineral) as it is a perfect tint, and not chalky like Cotz and other tinted ones I’ve tried.

I also love the Elta MD UV physical tinted SPF 41. I have the elements as well, but it’s also too dark for me. Honestly, there’s Really no reason why someone would have to make their own tinted sunscreen via mixing other sunscreens, but sometimes doing so can provide a more favorable cosmetic appearance. But just as you say, it’s hard to know whether mixing sunscreens, even if they’re mineral sunscreens, have an effect on the SPF and PA ratings.
Thank you for this video, I’m allergic to physical sunscreens and have had so much trouble with white-cast mineral sunscreens, and I have no alternative!! Do you know if it’s possible to mix normal foundation instead of bb creams with the sunscreen, or is it not advisable?
@brandonmilesmay
2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! I wouldn’t mix foundation with sunscreen. The formulations are just too different and can interfere with how the spf sets up. Some people find tinted mineral sunscreens work just as well as liquid foundations; have you tried those? One of my faves is Colorescience
love this video! can i mix in hyaluronic acid or ceramide NP into this?
@brandonmilesmay
3 жыл бұрын
From what I can tell, the addition of other molecules and serums to sunscreens may negatively impact how well that sunscreen performs. I would apply your hyaluronic acid or ceramide NP to your skin first (with or without a basic moisturizer) and let dry down and then add your sunscreen on top.
Great vid. I'm currently using two different brands of 100% mineral sunscreen as one is tinted and one is very white! I mix them up like you did and apply one layer. I really hope this does not affect the protection level! What do you say?
@brandonmilesmay
2 жыл бұрын
As long as you're wearing SPF, you're getting protection! I sometimes mix the DRMTLGY non-tinted and tinted sunscreens together -- both have the same sunscreen filters and roughly the same ingredients, so I generally don't worry about the mixing compromising the protection factor.

@@brandonmilesmay Awesome thanks for the reply! Sticking to the same brand for mixing is probably ideal I would assume.
Hey can I use zinc spf powder with a minarel sunscreen??? Will mixing those two break down the formulation? Or will work fine??
@brandonmilesmay
2 жыл бұрын
That should be fine! A mineral SPF powder adds additional protection and may help mattify an oily-looking sunscreen, which can be quite helpful during hot, humid days.
WHy couldn't you just mix the two Cerave sunscreens? The tinted and non tinted I thought of trying that
@brandonmilesmay

I’ve actually done that as well. It definitely works! I do find that the BB cream or the pigment drops allow more room to “play” with the color, however.
You want blue light. You want all the lights. They do a lot of good. You don’t want to be baking out in the sun though.
I've started scratching bronzer powder into my mineral sunscreen... anyone?
I find my mineral sunscreen settles in my large pores which doesn't look nice. Do you think it's ok to wear a primer under 100% mineral sunscreen?
@brandonmilesmay
2 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely OK, I’ve even thought about doing it myself. Just make sure the primer has dried down a bit before applying the sunscreen
@RM-ti6go
2 жыл бұрын
@@brandonmilesmay I was expecting a no haha! They always say do primer after your sunscreen, but perhaps that's more justified with chemical sunscreens. I will give it a go and see how it goes. It might go horribly wrong but we shall see, lol. Thanks for your input!

@@RM-ti6go haha good luck! I guess I was just thinking about myself, since I don’t wear makeup. I would apply a primer and then sunscreen, and that’s it. I thought about getting an SPF primer to add a little extra protection. Sorry I couldn’t be more help!
