Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this DIY video I show you how to make your own shiplap for half the cost by showing your how we made our own modern rustic shiplap wall in our kitchen. The paint that we chose for our shiplap is Aviatrix by Sherwin Williams.
Steps-
- Rip plywood down to 5 7/8" or the width needed for the look you want
- Cut 1/8" by 1/8" grove on one edge of each board
- Mark stud locations
- Nail shiplap to wall at the studs
- fill in nail holes with wood filler
- Sand
- Paint
Tools used -
kolbalt 10" table saw - low.es/2kXpYnD
Bostitch Air compressor kit - amzn.to/2l0itLD
Bostitch brad nailer - amzn.to/2l0kfMY
Porter Cable sander - amzn.to/2kw3SLa
Wood filler - amzn.to/2kw3a0j

The ending was the best part. Instantly subbed. Most people get annoyed, and refuse to show the kids that are a huge part of their life. Embracing the chaos is the best, and most beautifully genuine to be. Keep up the great work!

nice job. You can also make diy shiplap by using pressure treated 4" wide fence planks from home depot at 1.19 a piece for a 6 ft board. Let them sit outside a couple weeks and then they can be painted or stained, and you only have to cut them once each with a chopsaw (much safer than tablesaw) to length you want. It's a thicker "barnwood" style shiplap

Yes he is. However his installation doesn't overlap, is simply butts up edge to edge leaving the rabbet exposed to simulate a joint. That is not shiplap. Don't get me wrong, it looks awesome, it just isn't true shiplap.

Great end result & look. Excellent idea to cut in the 1/8" horizontal groves rather than wasting time in gapping each board (little extra time on the table saw saved install time). My only question...with the planks now butted together have you experienced any deforming due to expansion/contraction due to change in ambient conditions. Also, what would you change if you did it again.

  • @mechammatt

You should put plastic extenders for your electric box so you don’t have exposed wood beside your screws on your outlet. You never know if it would spark and ignite the wood. Most places it’s code. 👍🏻

Matt, Thanks for the video. Very informative but i have to agree with several of the commentators in that you need to be far more careful working around the table saw. The table saw is considered the heart of the woodworker's shop but it's also considered the most dangerous tool in the shop. Just a bit of constructive criticism to hopefully save your hands and fingers.

Matt Mecham I wish I would’ve grown up with women working with wood. It seems like I never saw females doing much woodwork unless it was to paint. Especially as a kid I’d always be playing outside while my dad would be outside in front of his huge building setting wood up and measuring it. I do remember I did love to watch him w his tape measures and pencils marking wood. Then he’d say go stand over there so u will be safe because saw dust might fly in ur eyes... then I’d hear that ever so loud and disturbing skill saw when he started sawing the wood. Now I think about it I’m sure that sound is what prevented me from wanting to learn any woodwork skills. Plus, back then all I ever saw were hammers for nailing wood and that seemed like too much work when I was a kid. I didn’t see a electric nail gun until I was like 20 years old and that still didn’t give me any desire to work w that thing either. But I’ve always had a huge desire of taking old houses and restoring them and also furniture. Then 10 years I found addicted to rehab and was hooked. Then as I watched that small petite girl refinish that wood in those houses and that’s all it took for me to realize how much I loved working w wood...I guess that’s why I loved watching my dad but the saw, hammer and nails kept me from seeing my interest. Now I see meet other females my age that work w wood as hobby all the time. I still don’t saw wood but I do love to sand it. I couldn’t have ever imagined seeing me or any other girls saying we wanted to take Woodshop instead of home economics back then in high school. We would have been laughed at and it just goes to show how much we can be under so many influences with the school systems and it’s not because of peer pressure but the pressure of the system in general.

Hi Matt! I'm not familiar with Shiplap. Is it just an alternative covering, or does is serve a specific purpose? Also, I noticed you didn't use anything on the wood--such as a primer. Will the paint hold up? It looks gorgeous and I really would love to tear out this PANELING (no joke) from my mother in laws house that we live in since she's passed away. Maybe I can convince my hubby to watch your video and give it a shot! Thanks for a great video, congratulations on your channel!!

Thanks for the vid. I'm confused on the grooving process though. Shouldnt the shiplap have an opposite grove on each side of the board? Otherwise how does the wood stay flush as you move up the wall? www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/1000/53/53748401-e5a8-4f0b-b613-96af724aa6f5_1000.jpg

  • @mechammatt

The groove is just there to help it look like shiplap. The boards stay flush because they are nailed onto the wall at the studs. If you think the opposite side groove is needed you would just need to flip the board over and add the groove. Making sure you cut deep enough that the boards lay flat. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • @ronstrode9124

I am critiquing now, I liked your idea but; 1. I think dark gray took away from ship lap. 2. Do yo think if you cut 30-45 degree bevel if it would have same affect.. 3. I agree with others, be more cautious.. 4. Buy a longer level::)

Are you supposed to put a nickel between each board to make it look more like shiplap? I have no idea if that is a good idea or not... it seems like I have seen that done somewhere... LOL
