I say good job doing it the way you are. Dude said hes only using a 110 welder, so its not going to flow like a 220 or a tig. Saving money is the point, and if it works who gives a shit what it looks like especially under header wrap. At least he has the nuts to get out in the shop and cut some shit up. Cast steel is perfectly fine, you wouldn't even attempt this with cast iron. I'm not saying its how i would do it but if it works, hell yea

its all about doing it on a budget. they may not last as long as a full stainless tig welded set up but this costs nothing or next to nothing and gives someone an alternative to spending a big buck up front. could always weld up a proper one if you wanted to after the fact. good video and cool idea to save money. and yes i am a machinist and understand the metallurgy of cast and welding weakens the manifold.

I mean, for a quick and dirty setup, I guess this works - sort of a "REALLY on a budget, trying to salvage what I can, and make it work". I think ideally, you'd want to just buy a bunch of proper exhaust grade mandrel bent piping, and have it custom cut, and welded. All the same material, no franken builds, better flow... HOWEVER, all the comments on the weld quality aside, this is great for the backyard/junkyard part builder. Kinda cool!

@Cracked1ce
8 жыл бұрын
they are most likely cast steel. don't know who told you they were mostly cast iron. yes maybe on other angines like the older sbc engines (305, 350) but the newer ls engines have cast steel manifolds. you should be fine doing this and if not you can pick up one of these from practically everywhere for about 30$

@PROJustinSane
8 жыл бұрын
+snail5341 correct your not using the scavenge affect to draw in fresh air.
@zososldier
8 жыл бұрын
+snail5341 equal length tubing can be a bonus but not %100 necessary. Many companies and OEM brands will use a log style or cast manifold with great success at the low to mid range power levels. You will however usually see equal length headers on higher power turbo builds for even exhaust pulses and scavenging which will lead to a more smooth turbo spool. Likewise they will also be used on more expensive systems when you want more efficiency. Not saying it is a high end upgrade but in the Subaru market, equal length headers are some of that communities first parts swapped on turboed boxer engines.
@Cracked1ce
8 жыл бұрын
the cams on a turbo however don't overlap like they do on a big NA cam so its not really scavenging. still equal length tubing is nice and would provide evenly distributed backpressure and even less backpressure

i heard you can't really weld good onto iron cast manifolds... is it true? Did it crack during this time?

These Mani are cast steel
While not the most aesthetically pleasing - I think your ingenuity is AWESOME! - Get a better welder and some better metal cutting tools - you'd be A+! Outside of that small critique - Your effort and willingness to share is great! Keep it up!
Is the pipe u used stainless?
good video
did you end up using this manifold?
what kit do you sell
what do you think about running a turbo off only one side of the engine leave the other side alone?
@ImElkay
8 жыл бұрын
it's stupid, you're basically doubling the time the turbo to spool up and making the power of a 4 cylinder when you have 8
@Cracked1ce
8 жыл бұрын
and you would have backpressure on only one side of the engine. this is a very bad idea and i would highly advise against trying this.
is it not easier to go around the front if you have clearance
@PROJustinSane

depends on your exact set up and clearances. this is just one option.

You said you had a 110 welder. So the mig works well in this situation?
@PROJustinSane

Yes it's much easier then a tig. But stick could also work.
how much are you selling the turbos for ???
What type and thickness are you using for pipe?

regular mild in this case
Justin Sane..... please email me I have some questions on doing a complete build on a 5.3 avalanche
How much for the t4
Holley makes new cast manifolds that easily convert.
man this is awesome, relocate and mount your coils down below the manifolds and you would be better off
Justin. ...you still got that Awd civic bro.......
nice vid ..can I use 2.5 pipe and not 3.0 like u ??
@PROJustinSane

Yes. That would be great for lower hp goals. This one is for a high hp 6.0 set up
@Mr_getinthere

+Justin Sane OK thanks so 2.5 pipes would be fine for 5.7 600hp

Eh. That's the upper limit. But yea would work
Fuck cut to the chase.... "but what I'm going to show you today". Jeezzhh
ever had a problem with welding cast to mild steel?
@user-zj2mb3sp3x
8 жыл бұрын
+secm207 The issues you're thinking about are with Cast IRON welding and the associated cracking, Cast STEEL like this is doesn't have that issue.
shes aint pretty but she will work for a fraction of the price thanks for making the video
Practice makes perfect ....
what welder do you use

Hey man from what I've heard most manifolds are cast iron. how is the best way to tell what your working with? I've got a 99 silverado 4.8 and not sure at all what there made out of.
@Cracked1ce
8 жыл бұрын
they are most likely cast steel. don't know who told you they were mostly cast iron. yes maybe on other angines like the older sbc engines (305, 350) but the newer ls engines have cast steel manifolds. you should be fine doing this and if not you can pick up one of these from practically everywhere for about 30$
Would you recommend painting the manifold with hi temp paint before wraping them ? I have herd the manifold could rust pretty bad from the heat cycle ,any experience with that ?
@PROJustinSane

they last 20 years or longer oem with no coating. it's personal preference

+Justin Sane ok thanks. What type of metal is the pipe you are welding to the manifold and did you order a kit with all the different bends and diameters ? Great vid btw loved how it looked when finished. Liked and subscribed.

thestig572420 I normally get a universal pipe kit from summit. Stay tuned for more videos showing more about this in the near future.
Atleast hit the rusty cast manifolds with a damn angle grinder before just throwing on your grose booger welds.

+Justin Sane could it work on a 4.3 ls engine? if so how much do you charge?
@Cracked1ce
8 жыл бұрын
no such thing as a 4.3 ls. theres a 4.8 ls tho. if the stock manifold is cast steel you should be able to however i believe those 4.3s are cast iron
@loganmilliner8734
8 жыл бұрын
CrackedIce man I promise you it's a 4.3 ls it's got the sticker on the side of the truck and everything. It's a cast v6 ls vortec block.
I however would like to see you build one out of an actual header not a manifold it would flow way better and look better.
you cant put one stock manifold down and one up. they are either both up or both down

I take it with forced induction you really don't need to worry about equal length tubing?
@PROJustinSane
8 жыл бұрын
+snail5341 correct your not using the scavenge affect to draw in fresh air.
@zososldier
@Cracked1ce
8 жыл бұрын
the cams on a turbo however don't overlap like they do on a big NA cam so its not really scavenging. still equal length tubing is nice and would provide evenly distributed backpressure and even less backpressure
hmm I'm sure it does not flow any different than stock
Fuck that's fucken smart bro

niiiiiiice
probably a cracking nightmare
Just inSane. Setting aside the aesthetics and possible cracking issues previously mentioned, this system will not perform as well as a mandrel bent or weld-el setup that is well designed and built. Granted this is gonna be drastically cheaper, you get what you pay for...
