If you're looking to improve your horseback riding beyond just walk, trot, and canter, the next thing you can add into the mix is lateral movements! A lateral movement is when a horse moves from side to side. If you have no idea where to begin when it comes to training your horse to move sideways, you've come to the perfect place! How does this translate into the saddle? Like what is the leg cue?

This is a great question! (great video idea too!) So, to begin, practice getting the hind end to step around by putting your leg behind the girth. To move the front end, your leg will be at the girth. To do a lateral movement, your leg can cue behind the girth, open your opposite thigh to encourage the horse to move in that direction.

@@CarmellaAbel thanks so much! And yes I'd love to see a video is you do think it would be a good idea. I just found your channel and I really like your videos so far. Very helpful! I have seen some videos but I never really understood what was going on with the leg, especially how it differs from some other leg cues.

@@CarmellaAbel That's so true! I just wish I could take lessons or still had a horse. I had rescued a 28 year old Arab 3 years ago and had the oppurtunity to do some ground work with her. I took a few lessons but never got very far and now that the hippotherapy place I volunteer at is closed, I really miss being around horses.
