When my husband & I started living together , we made our first bed together & pleated the bed sheet the exact same way & burst out laughing, it hit home how we were trained in our careers on how to make beds, I am an ex nurse & he is ex army.. 🇬🇧❤️xx love your bed colour choice Valentina.

Thank you for this video! We bought our first duvet over 40 years ago from a Scandinavian saleswoman and she "taught" me how to make our bed the "right" way as she said. No flat top sheet just the fitted sheet and a duvet with a duvet cover (that I wash every week) and a blanket at the end of the bed if needed! 40 + years later and I still make my bed that way and both of my grown kids make their beds the same way.

Your story about having to go buy sheets when you landed in Copenhagen reminded me of a hilarious story about Shaquille O’Neal. He spent $70,000 at Walmart, the biggest purchase in Walmart history, to furnish his home after he got traded from the Heat to the Suns. They had an apartment for him but absolutely nothing in it. It was after midnight, so he went to Walmart and literally bought everything he needed. He said he bought "Pants, socks, underwear, tank tops, TVs, printers, computers”... and I'm sure some sheets. 😉 The punchline was that his American Express card was declined twice because they thought it was stolen, lol. (Thankfully, he got it straightened out with the bank. )

Here in Australia we mostly use a top sheet, but it's not uncommon to have no top sheet. I always have my duvet 'unstructured' because the tucking in is just too much work in the mornings... By the way, I think it's much better to 'add' a child than forget one!

I'm so fascinated of the different meanings of bedding names between the UK and USA! Comforter, shams etc, no idea 😳. I've seen in the comments someone say that a duvet is a cover for a comforter, I'm confused 😂. We just have a mattress protector & a sheet over that, then a duvet on top, blankets/throws are added on top of that if required for decoration or extra warmth. A duvet in England is either stuffed with feathers/down or synthetic material and is placed inside a duvet cover. Pillows are put inside pillowcases and the top one usually matches the duvet cover. I think what we call cushions (decorative accessories) you call pillows (what we sleep on). Crikey I need a lie down......

Great topic! In Turkey, we do not use flat sheets. Duvet cover serves that purpose, removable and washable. Also, we put the blanket as the last layer. Like your kids, I find flat sheets difficult to use.

kzread.info/dash/bejne/a46VureDnNzXoqQ.html please see traditional Turkish duvet making in this video. Not to cover the beautifully designed and handmade face of the duvet, the cover was a flat sheet that covered the back side of the duvet and the edges were folded over slightly to the front. For the flat sheet not to move around, it was stitched to the sides. For every washing, my mom would cut the stitches holding the cover, wash the cover and stitch it back to the duvet. For this purpose, there were specially made large needles called “duvet needles”.

Hello from UK 👋. We had a clash of bed cultures when I first moved in with my partner. I am Polish and he is traditional English and top sheet was a must for him. Few years down the line - it's bottom sheet and duvet only 💪😂. The top sheet has it's moment in two weeks of summer here 😀 🌧️🌧️🌧️

Love the video! Over in the UK, it’s standard to do a fitted sheet over the mattress, then duvet - no top sheet (we call it a flat sheet) and they’re sold on their own. While more people here are using them, they’re less common maybe as homes here are smaller and don’t have much drying capacity. We began using one about 15 yrs ago when we noticed that good hotels did this but lately, we find a top sheet barrier practical for keeping the duvet cover fresher and helps us manage some chronic skin issues in the house. I tend to change the pillowcases, base and top sheet 2x a week, but I would just DIE if I had to do that with the duvet covers as well - I get lost in those for days!!!

Thank you so much. Love your videos. I live in Norway. I use one sheet to sleep on. And a duvet over me ( a thick on for winter, thin for summer). Two pillows and a blanket on top of it all to finish it off. I sleep with the blanket when it’s cold (I’m often cold, like you😅). But that’s it. This is a typical Norwegian way of doing your bed.

Hello from India 😁 Since it's pretty hot here most of the year, we only have the blankets and duvets out for 2-3 months during winter. Rest of the year, it's just the bed sheet (no top sheet), pillows, and then....we have a bed cover (usually with pretty patterns) that we put over the whole bed (including the pillows) and call it a day 😂 so all you see is the bed cover on top. i think it may be something to do with the dust problem that we have over here. it settles on the bed. so, before sleeping we remove the cover and then get into bed 😁 But, I'd definitely like to try out this layered style with maybe thinner layers...I only speak for my region. m sure the colder part of india will have a different story.

A lot of fun to hear about the bedding cultures! I could never sleep covered by a sheet only. Maybe in summer, in a warm material like flannel. That's two months. The rest of the year I want an insert duvet. Currently looking for something to throw over the bed during the day, to protect the sheets from our kids jumping on it. Needs to be effortless. I already have too many pillows. It was necessary last month of pregnancy and all the night feeds.

Thank you for this. My mom taught me how to make a bed. She told me the bed was on thing that 1. Stay looking nice all day and 2. Is wonderful to crawl into at the end of the day. And then I went into the military and bed making went to a whole different level of perfection. Then I became a nurse and the bed making was not as strict as in the service but still fussy. Before I had a shedding dog, who insists on sleeping on the bed, I would make a beautiful seasonal bed. Loved the look of a white down cover but no duvet, I could never figure out how to get down cover in. And I did layers. It kills me that I can’t make a pretty bed. I have traveled quite a bit. The first time I was in Germany I thought it odd that there was no sheet, but the bed was so cozy. I stayed in a tourist level in the UK. That was more an American style bed. I stayed with some friends who were Americans living in Germany. They had taken on the European style. Then I traveled Central Europe and came to enjoy he duvet covers. Two inns that I stayed in used the 2 duvet one on each side. I liked that and thought it would be good for the house keeping. Then I went to France to stay with a friend who had the duvet without the sheet. We changed the duvet together and it seemed so easy but I am sure it was because there were 2 of us doing it. I’m hoping that in my bed pretty and just keep the door closed during the day and just remove the pretty stuff at night. Thank you for the information.

In our home one of our family members has Parkinson’s and uses a hospital bed and a lift chair. I was born in Portugal and when I was little, in the 80's you could only buy flat sheets, duvets did not exist! You had bottom sheet, top sheet, blankets and a quilt and the top. We then moved to South Africa and it was different, fitted sheets, most people don't seem to bother with a top sheet in summer and a duvet, you will add a top sheet and blankets for winter. I do a fitted sheet and top sheet all year round plus a duvet, and in winter I will have a quilt over that, I do have a fitted under sheet electric blanket and I love it, I put it on before getting into bed and switch it off before I go to sleep. My husband is a hot water bottle so I am usually toasty warm if I snuggle up to him 😊

It’s impossible. That’s why you can see the duvets folded nicely at the foot of the bed in Germany, etc. Maybe add the throw plus a bed tray with flowers :))

Tried your method and it looked great! Even with my Costco sheets. Keep thinking about my mom who bribed me with painting a rainbow on my wall if I would make my bed for thirty days in a row. She was quite shocked she had to pay up. She would giggle to see my bed today. 😂

in Sweden we sleep with duvets with a blanket inside. It looks so cold when you sleep with only sheets and feels unnecessary to have so many layers as there is so much garment to wash haha

I just need more pillows in my life! Not a maximalist, not a minimalist, but I like another layer of decorative pillows to make my bed feel special. Also trying to find a balance between the layered designer look and the practicalities of living in a desert climate. Definitely don't need heavy comforters or duvets. Even light quilts get too hot much of the year. Really loving light matelasse coverlets with a little texture, especially ones from Portugal.

Its so nice to see examples of minimalistic beds. I have always loved the minimal tailored hotel look to my bed. Love that you don't use a ton of throw pillows, yet the bed still looks put together and elegant. Any tips for what to do if your sleeping pillows are super ugly? We both use oddly shaped contour neck pillows. They help my neck so much but they look very odd. I put our king sized pillows that we both use as our knee pillows in front of them, but you can still kind of see them. By the way. I've recently learned of the scandanavian way to sleep with two twin duvets so you each choose your warmth level. We love doing this although it does make styling the bed a challenge.

I am from the UK but lived in USA and now Spain. I always use a flat sheet between myself and duvet. I change the sheets every week and then I don't have to wash a duvet cover every week. I am very particular when it comes to how my bed is made. Always bed linen is ironed before being put on bed, I can't stand any wrinkles in the sheets so they have to be pulled tight and it must look pristine. My husband always laughs because I spend ages making sure the bed is just how I want to get in it. In the morning I pull the sheets/duvet back to air for minimum 30 minutes, preferably with the window open. Then I can make the bed. I love when the bed has fresh linen on it's such a luxury to get in to a clean, freshly made bed. When I'm watching programmes where people are selling their homes, I cringe when I see how some of the beds are made, or not, that just spoils the whole room for me.

Funny, I’ve never loved a duvet. They are always so messy and hard to manage. I love the folds you do and always tuck my comforter for a tailored look!

Valentina, I love your videos. You always make me feel smarter. Have you done any videos on pillows? I need a good pillow - I've been looking for 4 years now. I know it is personal preference but these memory foam pillows are awful and the feather ones are not like once made. Maybe I'm just getting old but I couldn't go to sleep till 2:00 am because my head hurts from the pillow.

I swear by wool duvet inserts. They temp regulate year round. They are heavy-ish but never hot. A-mazing! I live in England and mine’s from Devon Duvets. ❤️💯❤️ Typical here is no top (flat) sheet. Easy! And I iron the sheets every time. Makes ALL the dif. Being American, this was a bit weird to me too, but 12 years later I couldn’t imagine it any other way! 😍 TOP TIP: if you don’t use top/flat sheet it’s good to have your duvet insert dry cleaned and sanitised every season.

love my sheet between the fitted one and duvet. US raised here but lived in UK for awhile. Just cleanlier to me and easier. duvet covers are a pain to take off and wash. Stand by it. I do prefer a "messy"/relaxed bed look vs structured tho

I saw someone turn the top sheet edge under the folded over top of the blanket/quilt for a nice crisp edge for the top sheet and it is a game changer.

I'm from New Zealand, and we do top sheets too. When I went to Europe the first hotel I stayed in there, I simply thought they had forgotten to put the top sheet on :) I soon learned tho that that was a thing there.
